Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

So here it is, the first deadline! Great work so far everyone. You have until the 7th of May to post your finished model for the month - don't worry if its only one figure; quality over quantity!
If you haven't got anything done by the 7th then don't worry, you can still play a joker (read the 'whats all this about' section). And if I don't hear from you I'll assume you want to play a joker but I'll pop you a PM to see how your getting on - you don't get away from me that easily!

PLEASE DON'T COMMENT ON PEOPLES WORK UNTIL THE 8TH!

That gives everyone chance to get there figures in and stops the thread getting clogged up.

    WHATS IT ALL ABOUT THEN?

Well, quite simply, you paint one figure a month for the next six months. Post a picture up at the end of each month and a group shot at the very end. Yes, its that simple. 6 models – without doubt the easiest tale of painters on the interwebs!

Jokers are there as a life line, a back up should things go horribly wrong so don't feel bad about playing one. If for what ever reason you need a break, just post in that months thread that your playing a joker and feel free to find a suitibly appropriate joker picture as is tradition. If for whatever reason you can't post, don't panic – I'll assume you want to play a joker and probably PM you to make sure everythings okay

Threads will open up on the first of each month, and you'll have seven days to post finished pictures after which please take the time to comment on as many peoples work as you can. The 'tale of's are all about helping each other and support. The more you comment, the more comments you'll get back!

A WORD ON PHOTOS – IMPORTANT!
    640x480 please! Or use thumbnails.
If you really really want to show off a bigger picture, then put a link to it – it means those using slower connections aren't waiting for big pictures to load.
You can use things like photobucket and tinypic to upload pictures. If you have any difficulties feel free to PM me and I'll guide you through it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I still join in?
A: YES! PM me or post in this thread and I'll add you to the list

Q : How much do I have to paint?
A : There is a minimum of one mini per month. If you paint more then that's great but for TOSP, its all about the quality over the quantity so put a bit of extra time into each piece and don't be afraid of asking for advice. Don't worry if you aren't the next Mike McVey - paint to the best of your ability, learn, and do the next one better!

Q : Can I include fluff in my months post?
A : Yes, go for it, but try not to make it too long - much like the pictures, its hard to scroll through lots of text on a slower internet connection. Feel free to link to it though if you have a plog on warseer.

Q : I have a question which isn't covered here/You did something wrong/Why aren't you as good at this as Gabriel?
A : Bah there's always one isn't there! Shoot me a PM If theres anything your struggling with, want to chat about, or if I've done something wrong then PM me because thats what I'm here for. I'm a rather chatty bloke and I'm more then happy to help people out where I can and when I can't, I can usually point you in the right direction.

    Q : Can I drop out?
A : No you can't, why should you?

Q : Didn't another guy run this last year?
A: Yep, the mighty DAGabriel, scourge of guildkind. Unfortunately he's a little swamped with work at the moment so I'm keeping his seat warm until things settle. I've also dubbed this season 2, as we might have a second tale this year (with DA hopefully back in the hot seat)

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

WHAT ARE YOU PAINTING FOR THE TALE?
Lots and lots of Malifaux things, mostly wyrd... mostly.

WHAT DID YOU PAINT THIS MONTH THEN?
    - Tale of War Tatakoa which I'll use as Zoriada
    - A toothy fairy I'll be using as Corphelius
    - A judge.. which I'll use as a judge

HOW BUILD IT? HOW PAINT IT?
I used liquid gold from Vallejo for my judge to make the shiny bits really pop, and Tatakoa was a labour of love. I still don't think shes finished though but we'll see. The judges pants were the most fun by far though. I'll miss red ink when I run out of it, I really will

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT LEFT TO DO?
Not a lot thankfully. I need to get the basing finished on the judge and tidy him up around the face. His gun isn't finished either as I'm waiting on more liquid gold from Vallejo.

    HIGHS & LOWS?
Putting liquid gold on for the first time. Christ does it look beautiful. I'm half tempted to go over some of my older figures to make them more shiny.

    PICTURES!
Tinypic still hates me, but I managed to get this uploaded while it wasn't looking. In your face tinypic!

    WHATS NEXT?
More in the Malifaux plog (see sig). I'm also eyeing some of the new necron releases - having a clock maker for a future father in law means access to steampunk bits and pieces to make some truly nightmarish creations.. Mwahahahaha

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

    THIS MONTH:
Something from three ranges I intend to paint a lot more of during this tale. Actually partaking in a painting contest with the Vaettir drove the output. I am currently finishing two Vstonin and then I still need to do three Varriers to get a starter set completely painted.
Besides that I finished my Death Kiwi, the first model finished for my Bayourk tribe for Arcworlde by Warploque Miniatures.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: I finished a lot this month; it looks good for this tale. I had a lot of fun trying new basing techniques and am happy with the results. The Vaettir have a painting scheme and I finished my Death Kiwi (it was on the shelf for quite a while now). With the basing for the Quar sorted and the paints ordered I will paint the first Quar next month.
Variation with painting helped me a lot to get things done.
Lows: I found out that I doubled the models I have painted this year with this batch, and even more so. This means I will paint a lot for this tale to do penance.

    NEXT MONTH:
More of the same, lots more where that came from. The Warploque miniatures Halfling project was a success, so I might even start a few of those in time.

As a side note Tor Gaming, the company the Vaettir are from, has started a fund raiser for their suffering and pain dealing, clockwork encased dwarf faction: the Nuem. Here is a link to a post on Warseer with more info.

Enough talk here are the pictures:

Four Varbres (two versions with parts swapped and repositioned), twisted tornados of destruction (30mm base):

Quar pigs, livestock as life counters for the command group (30mm base):

An angry bird with beak, claws and talons (50mm base):

Here be my objectives for my Dark Eldar Scourge Kill Team - the objectives are a crashed venom with data core counter for a Retrieval mission and a comms array for a Sabotage mission.

If you want to see the Kill Team that goes with these then check out the plog in my sig.

This month I will be painting Galan Quarterbane from Warploque Miniatures and hopefully Enuk Knights of the Fubarnii for World of Twilight.

Alrighty, here's what I've got for month 1.

Just one figure, but I'm pretty happy with him - it's a quar Caerten (captain-ish equivalent) for the Crusader faction. Overall painting the model went quite well, and he was fun to paint too! Got just the shade I was aiming for on the jacket, so that was nice.

As I mentioned in the last thread, a project was thrust upon me but I should have them finished well in time for end of May so they'll be taking over for my offering next month.

The great thing about the dwarves is that, even though there's this comic element, when they fight - they really fight!

Painted this month: 3 Infinity models: a Nomad hacker, a Nomad TAG, and a Combined Army Seed-soldier.

HIGHS: experimenting with new colors (P3 reds on the Nomads, new GW greens on the Seed-soldier, and new GW texture paint for the bases). And having fun with much more colorful models than those I've painted in the last few years.

LOWS: Man are Infinity models small!!! That, and being unsatisfied with the grey highlighting and shading on the TAG. I feel I should start over with a much darker grey basecoat, but I've seen enough of this model for now.

    Pictures!

    Nomad interventor (hacker):

    Nomad Szalamandra (TAG):

    Combined army seed-soldier:

WHAT'S NEXT: More Nomads and Combined army (Malifaux will have to wait a few months, I guess). You'll see my first attempt at SENMM on a Nomad reverend custodier (WIP pics coming soon). Now I really feel I should start an Infinity plog so I could show more angles of my models, and models I painted before the Tale.

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

WHAT ARE YOU PAINTING FOR THE TALE?
Mostly Malifaux, with a high chance of Infinity.

WHAT DID YOU PAINT THIS MONTH THEN?
3 Rotten Belles for the Ressurectionist faction.

HOW BUILD IT? HOW PAINT IT?
Nothing special for the build, I used the Malifaux inserts for the basing though. I wanted to keep the palette quite dark but wanted to have colour for their clothes, if I did them again I'd probably do the parasols different colours from the dresses.

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT LEFT TO DO?
Nothing, well almost nothing. I'll have to hit them with a matt varnish when I get some.

    HIGHS & LOWS?
No real lows, although the fineness of some of the minis can make pinning them a hassle. I bought a 0.5mm drill bit and brass rod to help with that though.

    PICTURES!

    WHATS NEXT?
Probably more from Seamus's crew, or Perdita and her family, or McMourning or Infinity....I just can't make up my mind!

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

WHAT ARE YOU PAINTING FOR THE TALE?
    My Infinity Haqqislam army

WHAT DID YOU PAINT THIS MONTH THEN?
    A single Naffatûn model

HOW BUILD IT? HOW PAINT IT?
Well, it was my first time painting an Infinity mini and also my first time using Vallejo Model Color paints. I decided to stay close to the "official" scheme, but I can still change my mind later for others minis as this one probably won't see much action anyway.

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT LEFT TO DO?
Varnish it. Hopefully it won't mess everything up.

    HIGHS & LOWS?
As said a couple lines earlier, it was my first time with VMC paints and my first Infinity mini, and well, painting it was pretty awesome. I don't know if it's the model itself, the paint, the fact that it's something entirely different from what I'm used to, but I really enjoyed it. I'm still learning, but I'm pretty happy with how it went. It took me 3/4 hours to paint.

    PICTURES!

I need a better lightning and better photography skills :-) It's a little blurred and some highlights are "eaten" by the bad lightning.

    WHATS NEXT?
More Infinity Haqqislam minis :-) I have 2 more Naffatûns, I'm hoping I can paint those 2 in the same time it took to paint this one. Unless I completely change my mind on the color scheme in the process...

WHAT ARE YOU PAINTING FOR THE TALE?
Inquisitor28, Warmachine/Hordes, Mordheim (maybe) and Freebooter's Fate. Plus random RPG figures.

WHAT DID YOU PAINT THIS MONTH THEN?
2 Cabertossers, Epic Grissel, Nomad Warjack, Bonaccia, Elliott the Monk and Savant Mortemer.

HOW BUILD IT? HOW PAINT IT?
Most things are stock models. Mortemer is converted from a Forgeworld model with swapped arms, additional books and the Inquisitor symbol removed. Painted using mix of P3 and GW paints.

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT LEFT TO DO?
Nothing on these. I don't tend to varnish my models.

    HIGHS & LOWS?
I'd have liked to have made more progress on the other Inq28 models I'm painting. Just means more to get done this month.

    PICTURES!

    WHATS NEXT?

Various bits started this month - Harlequin (FF), 3 Greylords and Valchev (WM), Saul Kraye, Cyberhound and Vacetti (Inq28). Then additionally an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor for another competition converted from bits from Warmachine, Dark Eldar, Imperial Guard, cogs etc and Rok (Hordes) and if I get to her another Inq28 model. Kraye, the cyberhound and Vacetti have to be done before 9th June when they get used in the Inqvitational. The Ordo Xenos model likewise before the end of this month.

WHAT ARE YOU PAINTING FOR THE TALE?
    My Infinity Nomad army

WHAT DID YOU PAINT THIS MONTH THEN?
    A single Interventor model

HOW BUILD IT? HOW PAINT IT?
Basic build. No conversion made to it. All done with brush for a change, as I was doing the older ones with the airbrush.

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT LEFT TO DO?
    Nothing it is all finished.

    HIGHS?
It is finished! That and the greys on it are better than most of my greys.

    Low?
I still have plenty left to go! And I need to take much better photos of this and everything in the future also!

Next month will be the Krazy Koalas and probably a single model to go with them.. not sure which yet though..

    Cheers

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

WHAT ARE YOU PAINTING FOR THE TALE?
A detachment of Nomads and an Inq28 warband

WHAT DID YOU PAINT THIS MONTH THEN?
    One Prowler for my Nomads
One Cyber-mastiff and Handler for Inq28
I also painted an ogre horde as a commission for South Coast GT (two Ironblasters, ten Ironguts, three characters), a Dark Elf Dragon and half a Prussian fleet for Dystopian Wars - perhaps why I only managed to two models for the Tale!

WHAT HAVE YOU GOT LEFT TO DO?
The rest of the Nomads, and a load of henchmen for Inq28 - mostly working out how to do the Inquisitor himself, mainly!

    HIGHS & LOWS?
Only getting the two models (three...) was a low point, but work commitments and other painting projects just got in the way. Working out my scheme for Nomads was also a trial, that took a good number of different schemes and lots of re-painting. With the scheme settled though, hopefully the next few will be quicker!

    PICTURES!

Arbitrator Farva with his faithful Cyber-mastiff
Farva entered the service of Inquisitor Draegerman during his investigations on Akeris, aiding in the pursuit and capture of several important individuals through the depths of Akeris Capitalis, a labyrinthine hive-city Farva had served for eight years. Never a model Arbitrator, Farva had a tendency for cruelty and took any perceived slights against his authority or skill very poorly. This personality flaw, combined with his fondness for alcohol, limited his judicial career and led to his relegation to the position of cyber-mastiff handler, a rank from which he was never advanced. It was often remarked that he treated his cyber-mastiff charges better than any human. Nevertheless, Farva was chosen by the Inquisitor and served in the Akeris investigation to the best of his ability, his hounds tirelessly hunting suspects through the depths of the Underhive.

    WHATS NEXT?
The two Moderators and a couple more characters for the Inq28, no doubt. For my Raven Guard I also have two more Apothecaries, and some mroe Ogres for the continuing commission. I may also dabble in some Gatormen for Hordes.

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

Argghhh.. I'm a few minutes late submitting, sorry! I'm sure Gomez won't mind too much - it's a woman's prerogative to fashionably late at times..

I'll post this up now, and I'll have a proper look/comment at everyone else's tomorrow when I'm at work I have more time.

    ---

WHAT ARE YOU PAINTING FOR THE TALE?
Puppet Wars stuff is my main goal, but Malifaux bits as and when I get chance/motivation

WHAT DID YOU PAINT THIS MONTH THEN?
Just the one - a Convict Gunslinger. I did paint the Razorspine Rattler, but because I did that before the tale I wasn't allowed to use it as my first month's submission. But I'm going to post it up anyway (so :P to you Gomez)

HOW BUILD IT? HOW PAINT IT?
I used mainly Gomez's Vallejo paints, with GW washes for some of the shading detail.

    HIGHS & LOWS?

    Gunslinger:
I'm pretty pleased with how the cloth bits (the flesh and white bits) turned out, especially the shading/highlights - even though they're a little too subtle, I'd rather that than have overly done and obvious highlights.

Painting the stitches neatly was a pain the backside, and I'm not massively happy with how it is - looks a bit scruffy to me. But then I have to remind myself that the model is smaller than anything I've painted before so the detail bits are going to be tricky.

    Rattler:
I really enjoyed painting the whole thing on this one - I drybrushed the whole thing and then made extensive use of washes to get the dirty/oily look.

    PICTURES!

    Gunslinger:

    Rattler:

    WHATS NEXT?
Who knows? I'm tempted by the puppet Ronin, or Rusty Alyce. And the zombie chihuahua looks cute.. I'll just wait and see what takes my fancy one day..
There's nothing that can't be solved by more undead hookers - Seamus, the Mad Hatter

Freshly varnished this morning, not very happy with the face and skin tones on her, but am quite happy with the armour on her arm using the new GW paints. But on the upside it is the first mini I have actually brought up to the stage where I am happy varnishing it for a long time.

Have had to replace her hammer head with one from a Mantic dwarf as the old one had suffered a lot of metal fatigue and dropped off.

Not so successful on the Infinity work I have done this month as am still unable to settle on a colour scheme that I am happy with. Will try and get caught up with infinity next month or might try to get some of my SOTR/Incursion stuff painted up.

    Next Month

Probably going to look at getting some Malifaux Ronin completed. And try and get up to date with Infinity stuff, but that all depends on how quickly I can finish refitting our bathroom at home.
