Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

so some replys to you very kind people

little joe; yes the base's have slots but i wanted it to look like they were walking through deep mud.Not sure how many more i'm going to do i've alresdy done another 5 and i want to do a pinger and some bomber zombies before i move on to some mech grenadier

    perplexiti;cheers mate

grisnik; they can hurt you, and i'm not joking one of the next bunch has a knife while cleaning him up he stabed me

gomez;start with a coat of tamiya clear red then while thats drying apply a coat of clear red with a spot of black in it the trick is to do the second coat while its tacky

hairy norseman; yeh i was going to do that a sperate colour but knowing what i'm like i'd have made it look stupid

keravin; check out the reply to gomez

    rotokultaxe; same as above

bubbatron; i did think of putting more weathering and gore on but i think it would have been to much and made them look messy, i find that some painters use weathering and gore to much and ruin a good paint job

whitworth stormbringer; cheers mate you should so get them done i missed out on that deal which was a shame

well like i've said above somewhere i've already got my next months done. 5 more zombies, had a forced day of last week so i thought i'd start some more, before i new it i'd finnished them and didn't take any pictures well i'm of to sheffildwargames societys tripples show at the weekend so that next months wages gone theres osme awsome stuff in here guys keep up the hard work

New here, but I'd love to be a part of this if that's OK.

I know I'm a bit late, but hopefully I can make up for it by doing two models before the next deadline kicks in. If that's all cool, I have a batch of models from the Grindhouse game Incursion ready to be done. I painted two models from the Axis a while back, but then things stalled. I have a load of Zombies, Nazis and Brits to do. Here are the two I've done so far.

Unless I hear otherwise I'll aim to get some zombies done for the second deadline.

Oh, and the base on Hans The Hunter needs to be re-done some time. I totally lost my round lipped bases and wanted to finish him for a painting comp, so I used a GW one.

I haven't abandoned this thread, I've just had a rash of "real-life" getting in the way. I'll have something to show for month 2.

@Basher - Rather than a separate colour, you could always try a light watery wash, then if you don't like it you can wipe most of it off before it drys.

Nice work Lono 13, a very gritty look. I really like that werewolf model.

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

Thanks Hairy Norseman, I tend to go to one extreme or the other. Very clean and bright, almost children's book illustration style, or gritty, grimy and bloody. The later was the only option for these in my mind!

The werewolf is an awesome and dynamic model. It's called a Blitzhund in the game. Just to mention, I am aware that these aren't actually skirmish miniatures so much as models for a board game, but I intend to use them as a unit display piece rather than in a gaming way, so I figured this was the best place for them.

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

I am a bit late, but here goes:

@GomezAddams: Once again excellent choices of alternative models. Tatakoa has a distinct Malifaux feel with her voodoo dollies and the Tooth Fairy might be even creepier than Coppelius himself, which your paintjob brings out nicely. Regrettably I can’t make out much of the Judge in the picture. I hope your feud with Tinypic will be resolved soon.

@basher: Great colour for the uniforms, the dirt on the coat is very well done, as is the blood.

@Little Joe: One can really tell from the pictures that you enjoyed these minis. The Varbres’ claws are fantastic as are the bases. Did you get those flowers from a shop for model railroads?

@Hairy Norseman: Themed objectives are cool.

@Bubbatron: Nice job, especially on Captain Jim. His eyes make him look so dramatic. He’s probably about to save the world in the nick of time.

@Whitwort Stormbringer: The skin looks fantastic. I still don’t understand why some of them are blue, but it’s great.

@Rotokultaxe: Not sure what you aren’t happy about with the highlighting on the grey, looks good to me. The vibrant colours on the seed soldier make him my favourite, though. Maybe I should Infinity a try myself, I’ve had a couple of PanO minis lying around for some time now.

@perplexiti: I have a strong suspicion that picture does not do the minis justice at all. Could you take another after adding some matt varnish?

@tame: Looks very good, colourful, but not like it’d be out of place on a battlefield. Personally I’ve found VMC hard to handle, somehow. I’ve only tried two paints from that line, though.

@Keravin: Cool assortment of stuff. My favourite are the Cabertossers. I am tempted by the Trollbloods myself, but there’s too much I still have to paint as it is. Looking forward to seeing more Freebooter’s Fate from you. I found those minis pretty difficult to paint, but you seem to be doing well with them.

@Grisnik: The blue hair is very…noticeable. It’s kinda like drawing a giant crosshairs on your head. I would not go to battle like that, but then that Interventor is probably a lot more skilled than I in the arts of war.

@The Judge: I don’t think you get to complain about finishing only three models when those three models are as fantastic as that. The transition between the different fur colours on the dog is particularly good. Very realistic.

@Morticia Addams: Nicely done, especially the brownish cloth bit is a great colour. Can’t wait to see more of these cute little minis.

@Arcanum: I like how the base complements the mini’s pose.

And replies to all of you lovely people:

The dark tones make the eyes light up even more and give them an overall dark feel while still able to use some stark colours.
Thank you, I am quite happy with how they turned out. All of the bases are inlays, actually, and extremely easy to paint. I think they fit the theme well, though, so I can take the credit for choosing them.

I really hope they are not, because most of the paintjob is pretty basic (not more than a basecoat and a wash in quite a lot of areas). For that they turned out nicely, though, I am willing to agree on that.

Thank you so much for noticing the muzzle! I am really proud of that part.

Good, that’s always a bit of a concern to me, especially here where the figures are not uniform at all.

Thank you. I have to admit, though, that the picture makes the dog look better than he actually does.

Yes, they are inserts from Black Cat Bases.

Thanks. I hope next month’s group will be even better.

Regrettably I cannot show WIP pictures of my next entry, because that's been done now for some time. Except for the bases, that is. Should start working on those.

I'm also late to the replying party... so many pictures, so many comments ! Been too busy painting to look at the thread, now I've 3 pages of posts to read and reply to !

Funny detail I've noted by skimming through the pages: we have 4 participants, myself included, who are using Micro Arts Urban bases... didn't know they were that popular

OK if I join in with a Chaos blood bowl team? I'd have to paint 2 minis per month.

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

    In that case.

Tale of Skirmish Gamers - Chaos Blood Bowl team.

    Models: 12 - 4 Chaos Warriors, 8 beastmen.

I picked this team up second hand from a guy who'd had his gaming stuff in his attic for about 15 years, so these are the models from the first release of the big blood bowl box with the plastic teams.

Here's the team as I got it.

    Some models will need stripping.

I'll divide them up into five batches, 4 beastmen, 2 chaos warriors, 2 beastmen, 2 chaos warriors, 2 beastmen.

I'm not guaranteeing I won't get any more minis for the team, but this gives me all the basic players painted. I've had a look at the GW website, and while they still do mutants, and there is a new minotaur that is actually pretty decent, they've dropped most of the star players. However I do have Scrappa Sorehead and Nobbla Blackwart who can be used with the Chaos team.

I've cleaned up 4 of the beastmen. I'll do beastmen first as it gets half of them out the way. I prefer painting knight type models to beastmen, as I like painting metallics and the effects you get with them.

I've now undercoated these and am starting to paint the chainmail bits.

I haven't been as active as I wished in this thread, but here I am with a small update and WIP shots. By the way, thanks to all who gave feedback/answers !
So, for next month, another Combined army seed soldier:

And my first attempt at SENMM (it is very time consuming, I don't know if I will manage to finish the model for next month):

And a size comparison shot, for those who wanted to know how small Infinity models are (Nomad alguaciles vs Eldar farseer):

This is why I wanted another tale of painters so close to the last one - that SENMM is stunning. The groin plate looks a little off but it might be the angle of the photo - I won't know for sure without a tutorial and more pictures...

@Grisnik - Looks good so far. The cloak looks good, though I suppose you could dry brush the bottom to make it look dusty and tie it in with the base. Those koalas are cute but what do they actually do in-game?
The koalas are great fun.. they are basically walking mines.. in game they sit within 8 inches of their controller. When another unit moves within 8 inches of them, they "activate" and run straight towards the enemy at top speed. Moving so fast that you cannot react other than to dodge them, cause even if you shoot them, they keep coming! Once they reach you, they attempt to grab onto your face and explode! So pretty cool stuff with them

Haven't had the time to touch up these guys since last I posted due to travel. However I have just picked up a Cawdor Necromunda Gang commission, so will probably begin to show those off in this tale also. Motivation to get them done sooner! While also trying to finish up the Nomads on the side

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 1 finished pictures, WIP month 2

Thanks Gomez! The white line that "separates" sky and earth is quite difficult to get right (you must calculate the right angle, and the shape of the object changes that too) maybe that's why you think the groin plate is a bit off, I myself consider that it is the mask that is a bit off... I might do a tutorial in the next few months with another model, as this one's SENMM areas are almost complete. But for the moment, I can lead you to the coolminiornot.com article that I used as reference: http://www.coolminiornot.com/article...cting-on-senmm

Blending the paint is the hardest part. Otherwise, my choice of colors is pretty simple: white (P3), ice blue, graveyard earth, and a bit of charadon granite.
