The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 8 & May WIP

Still hanging in there guys, right?

Welcome to the Tale of Board Game Painters

    What's it all about?
A lot of us wargamers have bought or been given some really impressive board games through the years that have had one extra special selling point; cool miniature game pieces. Mine (and my brother's) include Hero Quest, Space Crusade, Blood Bowl, Space Hulk (both editions) and most recently Chaos in the Old World.

When we opened the boxes we all dreamed of how awesome it would look (in just a few weeks, right?) when we'd have painted every single miniature to the best of our abilities. Awesome atmospheric board pieces with super realistic miniatures all over. Then a few weeks go by, sometimes a few months and for way too many of us a few years. The games are still awesome but all that paint seems to have taken the wrong turn at Albuquerque.

Enter the Tale of Board Game Painters. Now we're going to use the collective power of motivation to really get it done! Participants choose a miniature board game from their collection - one's enough for most of us; after all, they've been unpainted this long already, let's not get carried away - and paint it up in 5 to 10 batches over a period of 6 to 12 months.

At the end of each month (or the beginning of the next actually) we take photos of the month's good work, post it on that month's show off thread and give comments and encourage our fellow painters to keep on truckin'!!

More detailed description of the time plan and structure can be found in the OP of the original signup thread here!

Here are our painters at the beginning of this month:

Please let me know if you feel any of the info is wrong or if I've misinterpreted how/when you're painting the games.

    Board games finished: 10
    #1: steevn - Utopia - 5 minis painted
    #2: robscott5598 - Fury of Dracula - 5 minis painted
#3: steevn - Lady and the Muskateers - 6 minis painted
    #4: robscott5598 - Lost Patrol - 5 minis painted
    #5: robscott5598 - Claustrophobia - 6 minis painted
    #6: robscott5598 - Shadows over Camelot - 30 minis painted
#7: Solun Decius - Chaos in the Old World - 60 minis painted
    #8: steevn - Cadwallon - 20 minis painted
    #9: Sk1ndred - Mansions of Madness - 32 minis painted
#10: Solun Decius - Mansions of Madness, Forbidden Alchemy Expansion - 8 minis painted
Let me know right away if you've finished a full game and I haven't added it here or if the number of minis is wrong. I'm easily confused by all this

In this thread we start by posting last month's painting, our batches of finished miniatures. Include info on what the miniatures are and what portion of the whole game we feel we've finished. Then we comment on each others good work and begin posting WIPs of our next batch.

Don't forget you can still sign up anytime!

    Happy Painting!

OK, these were actually finished in the beginning of April, so should have been posted last month, but I took a full month of warseer blackout, so I'll just post them here, although I marked them for last month in the schedule.

Not as flashy as the group of heroes last month, but still necessary for the game:

Next up will be Kobolds, because I should get the paints I need for them in a few days.

Sorry guys, I fear I have to drop out. Came out of a holiday with an inflammation of the eye which put me down 3 weeks and now have to catch up with a lot of work in the job.
Don`t see how I could press in the hours for painting in the next two months even if my eyes get better quick enough. Will try to stay in the ToFP, but that is about all i hope to manage and even that mostly with high point charcters instead of time consuming units.
But don`t get your hopes too high, I will be back one day!

Sorry to post this again, but I think I may have posted in an outdated thread. Is it too late to put me down for a boodbowl vampires team? Seeing as there are only 4 months left, I hope to paint 3 minis a month for this tale.

Unfortunately I have to joker this month. Between exams and painting a blood bowl team, I didn't manage to find time to get my dreadfleet painting done. Hopefully I will be able to do a bit of catching up next month

@Solun: Looking good! the photographers suit is particularly impressive
@EmperorNorton: The play pieces tend to be the ones I dont look forward to painting, (Im looking at you dreadfleet ruler!) good that you've got those bits out of the way
@DAGabriel: Sorry to hear that! Hope you can get this sorted out soon

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 8 & May WIP

@Solun: Very nice looking, especially the highlighting on the black, which I always find very difficult to do. And I suppose those minis are tiny, which makes it all the more impressive.
@HereBeDragons: Yeah, and the spawning points (that's the pillars in the back, for those not familiar with the game) were surprisingly difficult to paint, too. Playing pieces
like that tend to be a lot less exciting.

No offense intended to anybody having posted here, but this Tale seems kinda...dead.
Where are all those people listed in the table in the first post?

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 8 & May WIP

Sorry I haven't been posting stuff recently, but I can't motivate myself after a varnish spray has just cocked up half of my Space Hulk stuff - it's not completely ruined but lots of bits need going over again, so I'm still a bit peeved at the mo. Dunno when I'll get back to painting but I will be back!

Solun: Nice stuff as always. I particularly like the red creature, I don't know if it's because it's such a contrast or the model itself, but you have done the reds on it really nice, the lighting on the musculature looks spot on.

EmperorNorton: There's something really quirky about SDE that just appeals to me and seeing you and others paint the models up does tempt me. Shame I have about a million other models to do first...

iamjack42: Nostalgia overload! I played this game as a kid (a long time ago now! ouch) and dreamed of playing with fully painted stuff. This is gonna be great when completed and you're going to have hours of fun. Have you started playing with them yet or are you waiting until everything is done?

    Comments!

@SolunDecius Very nice work. I agree with EmperorNorton, the highlighting on the black is very well done.

@EmperorNorton I like SDE, and you have done a very nice job with it. I sympathize with having some less-flasshy but necessary pieces, but you've done a nice job. Can't wait to see more.

    Replies

@Daemonslave: Sorry to hear about your varnish issues. hope they're all sorted by next month. I have been playing heroquest for quite a while with a regular group. We are now to the point where we can play many maps with all painted pieces, which is awesome. It's a great game for casual fun (I can even get my wife to play).

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 8 & May WIP

Ooops. I posted these back in the last months thread by mistake on the 5th. so I'll throw then up here as well. Sorry for the mistake.

Hey Solun! Sorry for the long disappearance. I had an accident which was I cut my foot in half and had to spend about 2+ months in convelesnce and PT. But I'm back now. I also noticed you forgot to add my completion of the 4 figures for Godzilla Kaiju World Wars, plus the extra +2 mothra figures.

I've been trying to get some of the old 3rd edition Talisman figures by Games Workshop done, and along the way I have been using both the original sculpted pieces from both that and Warhammer Quest for both games. Most of the figures are all in the same style and so I can use some of the Talisman figs for the warhammer Quest expansion characters and vise versa. I will also be substatuting a few newer GW plastics for some of the characters and/or monsters because some of the old Warhammer Quest Plastics (Like the Minotaurs and the gobbos, orcs, ect just were old monopose plastics from much earlier released kits) in order to make all the figures have the same level of detail and stylistic fit with the original four awesome heroes and the expansion characters. I want the entire set to have that perfectl early eighties Games Worshop style where all their features just just slightly cartoonish and every #$%&^ square inch had either a gemstone or a skull wedged in somewhere.

Here's what I have finished for the two games so far...

Firstly the original 4 characters from the Warhammer Quest boxed game. The Wizard, the Elf, the Barbarian, and the Dwarf.

my personal favorite is the Barbarian, since he is always the defacto leader of the group whenever he is on the board he automatically always gets the lantern as his only piece of special equipment. Since all the other characters have something special modeled on them to represent their special equipment but he didn't I felt the need to modify the figure to properly reflect his status as leader and lantern bearer....

I cut off his hand, and then pinned and glued a dwarf hand with a lantern from the Battle for skull pass set. I then slightly built up his knuckles and hand "meat" with a very tiny bit o' green stuff so he didn't have tiny hand syndrom. The original pose just has him thrusting his palm out in front of him and looked like some kinda strip tease or something. I am very happy with the results.

Also I have some of the first batch of Talismen characters done.

The Halfling (which doubles as the Halfling Thief expansion character in Warhammer Quest)
The Assassin (Which also doubles as the expansion Assassin character for Warhammer Quest)
and the Wizard (Which I use as the Kislivette Raven Shaman Expansion Character over in Warhammer Quest)

Then we have the Necromancer/Liche (Which isn't a Tlaisman figure but I love the goofy oversized sculpt details and think it fits in really well with the GW models of this era)
The Talisman Sorceress (Who's base is not yet painted)
and the Talisman Druid (Which again, pulls double duty in Warhammer Quest as the expansion Druid character)

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 8 & May WIP

Next, we have a newer Warhammer Ogre doing double duty as both the White Dwarf expansion character for Talisman 3rd edition and the Ogre Mercernary expansion for Warhammer Quest.

Unfortunately I tried a new brand of spray sealer varnish on this fig, and as you can tell it was WAY too glossy. 'eh live and learn I guess.
I can always just pretend he is a particulary greasy and sweaty big ogre.

Here are some additional fig pics for better focus compared to some of the above group shots.

Since his whole snow bound base and raven wing theme reminded me of the god Odin in his "Wandering traveler" disguise I decided to give him some extra character and leave one eye socket blank.

And lastly I finished up the second version of Shadows over Camalot. This was basically me repainting a second set of Knights, objectives, and the two new characters (sir Belvedere & the wizard Merlin) because the expansion for the game uses the exact same card art and figures to represent the new Knights.

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 8 & May WIP

@Solun - Those minis look amazingly good. Very impressed at how the Player Characters turned out. Excellent work. I like how the red creatures have a very glossy, meaty look. It seems very appropiate for the physicaly unnerving and instantly psychologicaly repulsive nature of "Mythos" beasties. Also I had the exact same idea of how to "base" the large creatures once I started my set, but wasn't 100% sure it would work. Having seen how good it looks on yours I'm now entirely sold on the idea. Thanks.

@EmperorNorton - I am loving your Super Dungeon Explore stuff. Nice strong quality painting month after month on what i imagine are very different stlye of minis to paint and make them look good. However you continue to deliver. Great job. I hear you about the "uninspiring" nature of some of the "necessary" pieces soemthimes, which I normally leave for the end of each project. Probably not the best way to do it since my enthusiam tends to be flagging by that time. Nice that your got them out of the way early and still have some good characterful models left to finish.

@ Iamjack42 - Still loving the HeroQuest stuff. The wizard is especially nice. I think the freehand on the cloak is nice, but those blue gems look amazingly well done. Not to be overly critical but I think that Chaos Warrior would benefit from some additional darker washes on the purple armor and then some more bright edge highlights. Compared to your other minis it just looks very "flat", then again that may be just the photography.

@ Demonslave - Sorry to hear about your issue with the spray sealer. As mentioned above I stumbled across somthing similiar. Luckly for me it was a case of "too shiny" as opposed to the dreaded "frosty effect". Hang in there and please continue to work on your stuff. I was really inspired to start on my copy of Space Hulk soon, especially seeing your hard work and the blast from the past DeathWing expansion style pieces. Hope to see more of it sooner rather than later.

If I can tear myself away from continiously watching Game of Thrones I will try to get some more WIP pics up this week.......after all someones gotta keep this "Tale of..." alive. JK. But no, seriously, where has almost everyone gone? From the things and difficulties some of us have relayed after some extended absences it seems this is a gaggle of cursed painters with some really bad luck this year.

    Hi all!

"Great work" to those still keeping this alive.

It is true, as some of you have stated, that this month is a bit less productive than before. For myself it's the simple fact that summer came and I've been doing all kinds of fun stuff other than painting miniatures.
I most definitely do not feel that this tale is dead and I'm putting up this month's thread tonight (when I'm done doing fun stuff outside ).

I apologize for having been so absent on warseer for the last weeks/months but I have a strong feeling that this tale will pick up again sooner that later and those of us who love to paint in the long daylight hours will have to keep it's heart beating until then.

See you in the new thread tonight!

OK, this months thread is up right here: http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=342928

@EmperorNorton: Nice work getting that scenery out of the way. Looks nice! Thanks for the nice comments, and I do hope (and believe) that the tale will pick up again.
@DAGabriel: That's too bad man! You really had a good run here. Hope to see you again sooner than later.
@juicytomatoes: I've got you in this month's table with the vampires. Now let's see what you've got
@HereBeDragons: Hope the exams go well. Your dreadfleet will hopefuly be present this month then? Thanks for the comments. I was really happy with that particular suit myself.
@iamjack42: Excellent contribution for two months. I'll fix last months joker in next month's table. The set is really shaping up and I'm pretty sure your painting is getting better each month too. Thanks for the comments too.
@Daemonslave: Too bad about the spray mess. Thanks for the comments. I had, and still have, mixed feeling about the red thing, but I think the highlights managed to make it pop.
@robscott5598: OUCH! Sounds brutal! Amazing contribution this month, man! I hope I've got all your stuff right in the opening post now. I've given up trying to follow your plans, just add and post whatever it is you're doing each month. Very impressive, both quality and quantity. Thanks for the great comments too! Very glad you like it.

That's it for May, now let's see it in next month's thread!
