    The to hit roll...

Hello Gents I have a quick question about the to hit roll.

Thinking about using Empire and the Hurricanium has got me thinking; the +1 to hit ability is stackable so what it the minimum to hit roll you can achieve in Warhammer?

I know with the advent of the FAQ it is now possible to auto wound but what about auto hit?

Is it also possible to create senarios where somebody could auto miss? Fencers blade, Glittering scales, iceshard blizard could easily get a WS3 model into trouble.

I believe (But don't have the book on me at the moment), that for to-hit rolls in combat, a 6 is always a hit and a 1 is always a miss.

This is different to the to-wound roll, where no such thing is stated and hence you can have circumstances where you auto-wound or can never wound.

Yes, WS0 is the exception where every attack by them misses and every attack at them hits.

It's arguable whether every attack by them misses (6's always hit IMO takes precedence), but WS0 is an exception where every attack at them hits for sure.

Agreed. I don't see anything to contradict the 6-always-hits rule. Though it would seem kinda awkward to have a WS0 unit engaged with another WS0 unit. Would all attacks by both units be autohits, or would they still need to try for the 6?

A WS0 unit can't even attack, just like a BS 0 unit can't shoot. There is no entry for WS0 on the to hit chart.

There is a way through the coming darkness. But to find it we must change.

We must change and change until Change is our master, for nothing neither god nor mortal can hold that which has no form. Change is the constant that cannot be changed.

The rule book does include a statement that a to-wound roll of 1 is an auto fail but then muddles it with the FAQ that states a 1 isn't an automatic fail on the to-wound roll.

No. An A0 unit has no skill at attacking, so cannot even attack. A WS0 has no skill at using their weapons. They cannot defend blows because of an explicit rule, but nothing prevents them from attacking or getting a hit. Therefore, the 6's always hit rule comes into play even though WS0 is not on the to hit chart.

This is a huge issue for zombies as a magic debuff can create WS0. They are certainly auto hit, but they still have 1A. So 6s to hit anything makes some sense and seems fair. Otherwise they are just a speed bump.

How is a situation where you don't roll to hit relevant for the discussion of To Hit modifiers?
