Hi mrtn, looking good so far, just getting to grips with a box each of swedes & imperials. i found this site a while ago http://www.balagan.org.uk/war/thirty...ting-guide.htm
also a few books i have show that not all units had proper uniforms (looked like some just wore what they had). anyhoo keep up good work![]()
I don't have any firelocks, but I'll keep that in mind for the future.
Thanks mate.
Thanks Ian. I have read the Osprey books as well as some other stuff, and I think that uniforms are even more rare than that. They were the exception and random colour clothes were the norm.
I hope that you post up your own minis when you paint them.
On a side note I tried Army Painter's Strong Tone ink today, and it seems to be a very good successor to Devlan Mud. I can't see a difference that couldn't just as well be down to different amounts of water and so on. So that should be a relief to all devlan-lovers out there.![]()

Excellent to see more of Warlords ECW figures painted so nicely. I used up the extra bodies from my set by equipping two with pikes and one with a halberd. I used a set of puffy arms for one pikeman (posh bods would sometimes mix in with the pike block) and used some of the musicians arms to hold another pike. I had some of the metal pikes to let me do this, something I'd recommend as pikes are so easily bent and broken. Halberd dudes would have been sergeants with some sort of sash, either round the waist or over the shoulder which I added with a bit of GS. Apart from the usual resources of Osprey, museums and youtube of re-enactments and films this site, Art History Online, has a huge selection of 17th century paintings of which I've found the Dutch painters to be particularly useful.

Thanks Idle Scholar! I'm getting a puffy armed pikeman myself, using a pike that came with WGF's skeletons.
I finished another batch, and added grass to that and the one before.
Here is how the regiment stands now. Not bad in only three weeks work, if I say so myself.

Looking very nice so far. Hey, what's your opinion on the WGF skeletons kit?![]()
Thank you!
Thanks. Here's my review of the WGF (and Mantic) skeletons.

I'm glad I clicked this thread today. Great looking 30 Years War troops. My long time opponents and I are cranking up our ECW troops/armies. 30 Years War battles are on the plans too. I just got a couple ideas from looking over your photos.
I am therefore I think OR I think therefore I am?
For three weeks thats not bad at all. Hopefully I'll be able to paint at that pace this summer. Good review on the WGF skeletons, I've never been able to find one. I think I'll stay with the Mantic skeletons I've got. I know for sure that those thin parts would break after a couple games.![]()

Thank you, glad to be an inspiration.
Thanks. The WGF skellies seems like a great boon to a bits box, even if you might not want them for big battle blocks. I'm longing for summer as well...
It was my birthday last week and folketsfiende and another friend gave me the Pike and Shotte rulebook. Seems like a good rule set so far, I've only read a bit of it, but the rules seem fairly easy, and it's a good quality full colour hardback.

Hey mrtn, thanks for writing up the review. I really like the look of the WGF skeletons and recently in a weak moment got two boxes of them "for later diorama purposes" and, according to your review, they seem to be perfectly suited for that. I'd do a review of them myself but the only other skeletons I have here are the Heroquest ones and a bunch of GW ones from around the same time. I hugely prefer "naked" skeletons over ones with remains of armour and such so I guess the WGF ones will be perfect for my purposes.
Anyways, your models look really nice altogether. Have you seen the Tale of Historical Painters they currently try to get going here on Warseer? I think there should be an official sign-up thread up soon just in case you want to join in . On a different note, there's a 20% off sale on Warlord Games' website to celebrate the queen's inthronation jubilee. Goes on for three more days. It's not an insanely great deal compared to prices you pay at maelstrom or wayland games but it can save you a few bucks on miniatures that are already very good value.
Here it is!Once I am done my Andalusians I am going to get started on my Ruperts Blewcotes and Shrewsbury Regiment of Foote.

Your new figures look good. I really like them. I fancy quite a few of the Perry and Warlord ECW figures myself.
Thank you.
Here is the latest batch.
The metal officer (which is a nice mini) meant that I didn't need to make one from the command sprue as well, so he (the pikeman in the middle) was converted into just another pikeman, though one a bit more posh than the rest. Both of the new musketeers have been converted to carry musket rests. The one on the far left was the first time I've experimented with painting stubble, so he looks a bit grey in the face. The last pic not only shows the officer in an action pose, but also shows my home-made base made from the "copyright Renedra" part of the sprue. That bit is good for two 20*40 mm bases.

Well, I am going to be buying some of Warlord Games metal armoured ECW pikemen, with pikes upright. The only thing I don't like about WG's plastic, ECW, goodies are those darn pikes that are leveled....TOO long for my and opponent's basing system.
The above said......I REALLY LIKE WG's ECW, foot command minies. just might be buying some extra's.
I am therefore I think OR I think therefore I am?
Just do I as I did, put the levelled pikes further back in the unit.

Oh, I will be doing that as well. Usually our pike formations are only 5 ranks deep total. Besides, it's a good (excuse) reason for getting some more pikes.
I am therefore I think OR I think therefore I am?
Here is the latest batch.
The gun is an old 25 mm cannon I bought twenty years ago, it should work as light artillery in 28 mm. However I had already used the wheels in another project (my skaven Trojan Rat), so they got replaced with some old plastic shields. The gun is named Old Radebrecht.
These guys will get finished basing when I fill the base...
Here I hope you can see the details of the faces, the three closest ones have all had grey stubble added. I've tried to give them different skin and hair colour, to try to add some ethnic diversity into the army.![]()
