"Fear our name, for it is vengeance"- Memnons Imperial Fists

    Hi, thanks for dropping by!

So after the enjoyable year I've had with my Chaos Daemons (see sig) I felt it was time for a change and with the new paint range just released, what better time than to get back into painting!

Having seen the Iyanden Guardian in White Dwarf, I felt a quick test of this on a Space Marine might yield intersting results, and here they are:

Imperial Fist Test 1 by SteJohno, on Flickr

    1. Skull White spray
    2. Washed with Cassandora Yellow

As you can see this is a nice easy way to produce a bold yellow colour. The new washes stain much better than the old (very much like the old Yellow Ink).

Imperial Fist Test 2 by SteJohno, on Flickr

    3. Drybrush of Hexos Palesun
    4. Glaze of Lamenters Yellow
    5. Sharp highlights with Skull White

The dry paints are quite something! No chalky residue for this guy (although this is only a rough test remember)! The Glaze tied all the layers together and gave a very strong yellow overall.

Imperial Fist Test 3 by SteJohno, on Flickr

    6. After tidying up the non-yellow areas with Chaos Black, Adeptus Battlegrey (old range) and washing with nuln oil i started basing:
    7. Paint on Astrogranite
    8. Drybrush Longbeard Grey
    9. Wash Nuln Oil
    10. Middenheim Turf

I'm quite fond of the new texture paint range, I'd read some bad reviews suggesting it needs one or two coats or that it needed large clumps of paint to fill a base, but I found it quite easy. It does use more paint than you would using just sand but it's worth it for the time saving! Plus none of the sand is rubbing off and it dried in about 5 minutes!

So all in all this took me around 60 to 90 minutes to paint. Its only a rough draft and was just a way of trying the new paints but I'm happy enough with the results to try it on a full army. This will start out as a small scout themed army and will hopefully expand over time. In particular I've got my eye on the Storm Talon concepts floating around. If they prove accurate, I'll be all over them!

    Meanwhile, heres whats coming next:

Captain 1 by SteJohno, on Flickr

Brother-Captain Memnon, Master of Recruits, Lord Cavalier

Leftovers 1 by SteJohno, on Flickr

Chapter Banner from the 25th Anniversary Marine. As its covered in Fist iconography, this guy makes a perfect Captain. Not sure how I'm going to incorporate the banner yet but I've shaved the "crimson" letters from the upper scroll. The base will make a nice objective marker or terrain piece. Suggestions welcomed!

Updates in the next week or so. I'm down at Warhammer World in June so I'll be planning on having a 500 point force painted and ready by then! Feel free to comment/ask questions, I'll respond asap!

    Until next time....

Memnon - Very nice Imperial fists. The yellow is very bold, and striking. Well done

Have to agree. Man, my method of painting yellow is time consuming and damn annoying comparatively! Love to see new Imperial Fists logs. I'm just finishing painting a lemon yellow landraider!

Exclamation Re: "Fear our name, for it is vengeance"- Memnons Imperial Fists

Thanks for the responses people! I appreciate the feedback, I'm very pleased with the ease with which I can produce yellow models these days!

    Speaking of which.....

Army Undercoated by SteJohno, on Flickr

This morning I finished assembling and undercoating my first 500 points consisting of:

    Captain,
5 Scouts with Shotguns and Power Weapon,
8 Scouts with Sniper Rifles and Heavy Bolter
Scout Speeder with Assault Cannon (not shown yet)

A few hours later and I had this:

Army Washed by SteJohno, on Flickr

    And the "detail" shots:

    Captain2 by SteJohno, on Flickr

    SquadSniper1 by SteJohno, on Flickr

    SquadShotgun1 by SteJohno, on Flickr

    Speeder1 by SteJohno, on Flickr

I am REALLY please with the Storm, I had done an Emperors Children army that was done in the old purple wash and it was patchy and blotchy on vehicles- the new Cassandora Yellow is superb, no blotchiness for me! I also found a use for that limited edition base, just stuck a flying stand into the hole where the banner would sit and voila- themed speeder base!

So this is where I'm at, 1 undercoat and 1 wash with Cassandora Yellow. Next is a Hexos Palesun Drybrush, a Lamenters Yellow Glaze and a White Scar highlight. Then its just detailing! The main thing with the scouts is finding a camo/fatigue scheme. I'm thinking grey to go with the bases but I'd appreciate your thoughts...

    Until next time

Lovely work! Looks really good and with such a quick process!

I like the darker shading on the captain compared to the first test marines. I like when the yellow is shaded with a little brown in the deepest recesses.

Thanks! Interestingly enough, the yellow is just one wash of Cassandora Yellow, no brown involved! I have since deepened the colour though....

Today I managed to add a second wash of Cassandora Yellow, a drybrush of Hexos Palesun and a glaze of Lamenters yellow to finish the armour on my scout force:

Yellow Complete by SteJohno, on Flickr

    and heres the Captain

    Captain3 by SteJohno, on Flickr

The skin is a wash of Reikland fleshshade and highlights of bleached bone.

Finally I skipped ahead with one scout to try out the techniques for the rest of the force:

    ScoutA by SteJohno, on Flickr

Adeptus Battlegrey cloth highlighted with codex grey and washed with nuln oil. The red is Khorne red with Evil Sun scarlet highlights.

I changed the base slightly by adding snow rather than the middenland tufts of the first tester simply because i didnt think there was enough contrast.

So, what do you guys think, any suggestions are welcome!

Really like the painting, the yellow just looks incredibly nice, and might have to try the black recipe for my guardsmen as the current process is more tedious but gives just about the same result, it seems.

Not too fond of the snow though. If you go down the snow route (which is an awesome route to go down, it has to be said) check out Lew_81's Ogre log in the fantasy forums for a great snow tutorial. Currently yours look mostly like small piles of sugar that somebody dropped (no offence!), and I guess that's not the effect you're going for.

I do agree that white bases would bring some nice contrast, but to do justice to your great paintjob you need to step up the effect I think

    Cheers,
    BTB

Great yellow work which is normally time consuming. I think I preferred the gritty Middenland Turf - more dark and terrible 40K... you are pamping these out with ease, great to see the force grow

Cheers mate, no offence taken- if I can't take advice about snow from a Swede who can I take it from! And I do agree, GW snow flock is rubbish and hasn't done the base justice.

Thanks very much! The problem I had with the middeheim turf is I feel it would look better on a brown base.

So the base doesn't work, I like the grey Camo though but if I switch to brown bases it'll have to be brown Camo. Or I find something to contrast better on the grey bases. Suggestions are welcomed...

Heard some good stuff about GW snow flock mixed with PVA and white paint though. Fancy trying that?

    Funny you should say that:

One of my Inquisitor scale figures, I tried the technique last year but wasn't happy with it really. I think Mordheim Turf might be the way forward as its lighter...

Thanks man, I know how you feel, This army sat in boxes whilst I mulled over schemes for Crimson Fists, Exorcists, Ultramarines and Raven Guard, it was only seeing the new yellow shade that made me try out Imperial Fists!

I'm off to Warhammer World next monday so I haven't got long to finish painting! I plan on finishing on Thursday but more likely it'll be Sunday night!

Until then, you stay classy warseer...

Lovely yellow colour. Also the captain is great. Nice simple conversion! Can't wait to see more.

Nice Fists, I can't seem to refrain from encouraging any fellow IF'ers out there, but yours are very nice, although I prefer a slightly more subdued yellow myself.

Each to their own of course, I'm just after a change of pace from painting everything dark! Thanks for commenting!

So its time for another update. I'm about 80% done on the first 500 points now and with only Sunday afternoon left to paint before my trip to Warhammer World on Monday where the Fists will get their first blooding against my mates Necrons!

Today I managed to complete the dark grey camo and the reds as well as washing all the white with Nuln oil to give me a guide coat for the black and silver details to come:

    Army4 by SteJohno, on Flickr

    Captain4 by SteJohno, on Flickr

    Speeder2 by SteJohno, on Flickr

I'm getting quite excited about how they're turning out, just the base issue to contend with! I'll be posting more on Sunday along with a battle report on Tuesday. After that I'm doing 500 points of Orks, then I'll be adding the new flyers to each army along with a few extra bodies to make 750 points! Its going to be a long summer!

    Thanks for looking

Oops, double post, forgive me Warseer Gods...

So, with barely a few hours to spare I finished!!! Huzzah!

Squad 2a Complete by SteJohno, on Flickr

Speeder Complete 2 by SteJohno, on Flickr

500 Complete by SteJohno, on Flickr

I solved my basing problem- Rather than a wash of nuln oil to darken it down, I simply painted Astrogranite and then drybrushed with Longbeard Grey. Much lighter and so the tufts fit nicely alongside!

Warhammer World tomorrow, these boys get their first outing on the battlefield. Pictures on Tuesday!

In the meantime feel free to comment (can't be triple posting now can I!)

    Cheers for looking,

They look awesome Memnon! I think I'll have to steal that yellow recipe for my fists reboot.

Makes the job of painting an ENTIRE battle company (slightly) less daunting...
