    Question MSconfig question

I have a question about MSconfig.
I bought a new Dell computer a few months back and I checked the MSconfig settings recently.
It's a 4 processor system, i7-2600, but MSconfig was set up as 2 processors, so I reset it to 4 processors.
I know of another person this has happened to, so is there a reason for this, or is it just sloppy work at the factory?

    Re: MSconfig question

As far as I know the setting is diabled per default because Windows usually uses all available cores anyway, so setting it to 4 should not make any difference when it comes to startup times. There should not be a reason to edit that setting at all unless you are doing some debugging work/testing startup scenarios with different/limited numbers of CPU cores available.
    /numproc=number
This switch sets the number of processors that Windows will run at startup. With this switch, you can force a multiprocessor system to use only the quantity of processors (number) that you specify. This switch can help you troubleshoot performance problems and defective CPUs.

    Re: MSconfig question

    OK thank you.
Maybe I should set it back to two then?

    Re: MSconfig question

Was the checkbox checked in the first place?
In my case (dual core cpu) the checkbox isn't active, so Windows should manage the number of cores used during startup on it's own.

If you aren't noticing any differences after editing the setting it can't hurt to set it back, but on the other hand it does not seem to hurt to leave it set to 4.

It is checked now, but I don't remember if it was originally.
I will try it both ways and see if there is a difference then.

    Re: MSconfig question

An I7 isn't a 4 core system in the same way as certain Server configurations that actually have 4 seperate processors.
As Sylass has said, I believe the i7 'handles itself' so MSConfig settings shouldn't effect it, but I could be wrong.
