A little marvel comic assistance please!!

    Morning all

    Am after a little advice.
I have many of the marvel essentials books, but am looking for something more modern to read.
What can you guys suggest? Preferably a compilation, much like the essentials.
Is the civil war series worth it? Will also look at DC too if they are as good.

    Any suggestions appreciated!

The basic Civil War trade is quite good IMO, not too sure about the various spin offs.

I can recommned the fairly recent Guardians of the Galaxy stuff that Abnett and Lanning did, along with the Nova series and the war of Kings series they released as well. All good stuff.

The 1st Secret wars collection is worth picking up, if only as it really is the first modern era crossover extravaganza that we all now know and sit and wait for twice every year.

.. given things in recent movies I would suggest the various "Infinity..." series are worth picking up perhaps ? The first one had a hardcover reprint a short while back and should be easy to find, not sure about the 2 follow up series.

If you haven't read it then "Marvels" is pretty much essential and you should feel bad that you don't own it Follow up isn't quite so good. "Ruins" and "The Last Avenger story" are both good.

DC wise.. well... They do a similar line of essentials, I'd also recommend picking up Morrisons JLA run and Kingdom Come for starters. There's also a great variety of not quite superhero books from DC as well. The Invisibles is up there with the best things ever written. I could go on about The Filth or Flex Mentallo but I do read stuff other than Grant Morrison so I'd also recommend Fables, Y the Last Man and Preacher too.

Hope that helps, yell at me for further details.

No so much up on the Marvel/ DC series, but the above two from Vertigo are favourites of mine.
Mat Ward Fact #64001- Mat Ward has been described as willowy with elven features.

    Deadpool. Deadpool Corp. More Deadpool.

Siege is also particularly entertaining. Why? Norman Osborn goes slightly more bonkers that normal, and decides attacking Asgard is a really good idea.....

The best place to start in the DC universe is one of the Crisis books, preferably infinate crisis as it sets the stage for pretty much every DC thing that will happen that is of note up until final crisis which came out in the late 2000s as well as being one of the first 'events' in comic book history. Know your essentials .

Its a bit stilted though, so for a far more modern(and I would argue superior) event, try 52. It introduces the DC universe through the eyes of less well known characters and is a great character piece whilst dealing with the cosmic wierdness that DC do so well. It also sets in motion a lot of happenings that will take place in the DC universe up to its recent reset so I would really reccomended it.

Plus, booster gold and Animal Man. You will learn to really love those guys.

Vertigo wise, hell just get a tradeback and start reading. For the most part few of the series are linked and its all of a very high quality. Probably the most consistent imprint out there when it comes to quality.

Not Marvel/DC, but Invincible (published by Image) is absolutely worth looking into.

From Marvel, if you can find the trades for Supreme Power written by J. Michael Straczynski. Also, Rising Stars by him, as well.

Anything Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning have written for Marvel is worth it all the way. Best stuff published by Marvel for the last 5 years, easy.

Ultimates Vols 1 & 2 would be worth picking up.

Iron Man trade called Extremis as well as Resilient and anything after.

Any Incredible Hulk stories by Peter David.

As for DC, back in September, they rebooted their universe(s) and relaunched all of their titles with new #1 issues, so, if there are any DC characters you are interested in, now is the time to get in to it (except Batman and all the Bat-family books. Their continuity makes even less sense now than it did before).
