I'm wanting to do a conversion using some Chaos Warriors on 20mm bases. However, the models are just beasts and don't fit all to well. I've tried shoulder-to-shoulder and it may work if I trim down the capes a little bit. I could also go staggered, which may require trimming too.
So my question is - do they look too crowded? I could use 40mm bases interspersed but that makes playability a little hard (from experience with regimental bases).

They look very crowded, assuming your putting sheilds on they wont be able to swing their weapons without hitting the guy next to him. Why do you want to put them on 20mm bases?
Well, the cynic in me says he's doing this to maximise the number of attacks he can deliver while receiving the minimum number of attacks back in retalliation. However if that is the OP's intention he should be aware that the unit would be in no way tournament legal as one of the stipulates of all tournaments is that models must use the appropriate sized base, which in warriors of chaos armies is 25mm.
However, tourney rules aside i would think that the size of the models would make for a very messy and overcrowded unit. They'd look far better on 25mm bases.
They're for a counts-as conversion (20mm infantry) and won't be Chaos Warriors. 8th ed says you can no longer "go up a size" in bases so I'm forced to see if they'd work on 20mm. No shields, if that matters

Well, in the staggered fashion it works....just. Though it does look heavily crowded. What are you making? Is there not another more suitable model?
