    Matt varnish spray

I'm looking for a recommendation for a Matt varnish spray.

I have used the GW purity seal and found it left a white residue regardless of spraying conditions (admittedly that was about two years ago so it may be better now) and since then I've been using Humbrol hobby and craft spray varnish which is good and doesn't leave any residue but does have tendency to slightly dull blacks - gives them an almost charcoal grey appearance, which hasn't bothered me too much up until now.

I'm in the process of painting a FW chaplain dread and needless to say, dulled black is certainly not something minor for this model.

So I was hoping someone could recommend a good clear spray varnish which doesn't frost the colours at all??

    Testors Dullcote Matt Varnish

I used GW's stuff and Armory brand before. The GW stuff has a texture to it and Armory left a whitish sheen. Now I only use Testors, comes in a small black can.

Anyone know a reliable seller of Testors Dullcote Matt spray in the UK? They pulled it a while back apparently due to it breaching some EU safety legislation, and I've not been able to find it since.

The Army Painter anti-shine matt varnish is good stuff. Whatever you choose, don't spray it on cold (you'll get that white frosting) and do light coats not heavy ones. You need to spray at room temperature or warmer and make sure the can itself is not cold either (I've taken to keeping mine indoors now rather than in the shed so they are always at the right temperature for spraying).

The UK laws baffle me, but I just buy Matte Varnish by Krylon from my local hardware shop; I use the same manufacturer (Krylon) for my primer. $3.95 a can is much better than $8.95.

I'll put another vote in for Army Painter Anti Shine. I've only started using it recently, but results so far have been good, and its readily available this side of the pond.

    Re: Matt varnish spray

The only good one I've tried is Humbrol matt spray - knocks a couple of layers of gloss right back. But I'm still looking for comparisons with Testors Dullcote. The Antenociti link above shows one of the problems* I have in getting it:

Not for sale outside UK Mainland.
With others, it's either that or whack a big courier's bill on it. Compared to popping into The Model Shop or The Dungeon for the Humbrol stuff, on a trip to Belfast.

    * 'Course, this doesn't help much either:

I get my Testors Dulcote from Firestorm Games in Cardiff, I love it and can't recommend it enough!
