    Re: Planet articles

There's alot of articles in codex's, WD and on Lexicanum. Especially around the time of the 13th Black Crusade I remember reading alot of articles on the various systems and planets. Most of these are brief and dont always go into massive detail.

As for a layout you could go by these following sub-sections

Overview: brief description of the planet, where its based; Segmentum, Sector
History: when the planet was colonised, notable events such as invasions, civil wars etc.
Geography: planet type, cities, continents, oceans etc
Politics: how the planet is ruled, name of planetary leader, population
Economy: chief industry, mining, farming etc
Culture: what the people are like

I think this covers alot of the bases, maybe others could add to this?

The 3rd Ed BBB had a section with a list of planets that was an in-universe write-up. Gave planet class, tithe rating, population, etc.

The Eye of Terror codex had a two page spread (if memory serves) that had an overview of the campagin; key planets mostly, and the forces involved, if that helps

The Index Astartes articles are not written in-universe, they contain many things that no Imperial scholar could know about. Like the Fallen Dark Angels.

Snippets are included, but the books are really from the point of view of an omniscient third person view point.

The Imperial Armour campaign books often have quite detailed write ups for the planets and systems involved. The first Vraks book has a two page spread with all kinds of details, such planet size, topography etc.

The various 40K RPG books put out by FFG are great resources for details of various planets. They mostly focus on the sectors the games are set in (Calixis sector, Koronus Expanse, Jerhico Reach) but they're also good inspiration.

This is true, for anyone interested in 40k fluff, I can't recommend the FFG books enough. I don't even play the games but I have some of the books for their fluff and art alone.

I can't agree with that, many are written in an omniscient style, but I'm pretty certain GW has said they are intended to be in-universe. Hence why the Iron Warriors IA 'omnisciently' depicts the Imperial Fists falling into the Iron Warriors cunning trap (Iron Cage) whilst the Imperial Fists IA depicts it as a consciously made decision to whittle down the Legion. Likewise if they were truly third-person gods eye view of affairs they'd get little things like which legions were at Isstvan V correct in every article.

And they're not omniscient sinc ehtere ar emany cases of them stating that things are not known, like the details of horus' early history. or where the primarchs who dissapeared went.

They are written from different points of view yes, and sometimes they contridict each other and leave things open ended, but why would an Imperial scholar know about the Fallen Dark Angels or the secrets of the Deathwatch or Inquistion?

and inconistancies can be simply chalked up to GW not having very good internal editing as they often do.

I really, really like to think that the high echelons of the Imperium know a great deal more than they let on. It'd be suitably tragic for the Dark Angel successors to go out of their way to keep a secret that is fairly open and nobody actually cares about....

At the Anargo Sector Project we used to do this pretty actively. Look at this example
