Even when one dies, you are only fractionally behind the two Ven Dreads...

Yep and then you have 2 ven dreadnoughts for the rest of the game which are still more survivable, better at shooting and in combat if the situation arises. And if you lose 2 of your dreadnoughts then it's even more. Overall grey knights psyfle dreads ven or normal are worthwhile. A ven dreadnoughts with nothing is very good as you will smash stuff in combat and still have a multi-melta or a psy-cannon.

Sure you can only use the models the internet thinks you should use.
But you are the one who has to paint the models, you are the one who uses them in friendly games with your friends.
More varied models, chosen because you think they look cool or are cool to use, will ensure you'll have a much better time with your expensive toys and won't get bored with them quikly.
Ever got bored with an army you spend 200+ euros on?
I think you should avoid net lists like the plague, unless you are very into the tournament scene. Your friends might get frustrated playing against you, or you get bored playing with a point and click army.

So kids, say no to net lists and min maxing! Now you know! AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE!

My friendly games are still WAAC lists and players.

No - it ensure's YOU will have a much better time. Not all players think the same.

Nope. Never, bought an army I hadn't playtested, and played around with a lot of lists for first either.

I have 15k of CSM, and 3-5K of half a dozen other armies and no regrets. I'd have that if I had bought crap stuff that looked 'cool' though.

Or want to have a good chance of winning. Unless you are a good list builder (and most people aren't) start with a net list and then tweak accordingly.

Only if you and your friends have a different playstyle to you. Competitive players need to play other competitive players, casual players need to play other casual players - the two don't mix well.

...and losing is the other half apparently?
