    Starting 1000 Pt Dark Elves.

    Fantasy Army: BoC
I used to be an avid 40K player, and dabbled in fantasy on the side, but recently had some friends start playing fantasy, and decided to get back into it and join them. I decided to work with dark elves because they seemed like an army I'd enjoy playing. In any case, I'm trying to get a 1000 Pt army to start, and was considering this:

    Lord:

Supreme Sorceress w. Tome of Furion: 240 Pts. (lore chosen with matchup, but probably shadow or dark magic most of the time)

    Core:

    10 Crossbowmen: 100 Pts

    10 Crossbowmen: 100 Pts

    20 Crossbowmen: 200 Pts

    5 Dark Riders: 85 Pts

    Special:

    Cold one chariot: 100 Pts

    Rare:

    Hydra: 175 Pts.

Pretty simple game plan, shoot and magic things to death, COC and riders to harass and pick things off, and the hydra because... well it's a hydra, hydras are just awesome. Yes, against ranged armies, it will probably draw a fair bit of fire, but that's not entirely a bad thing, as it will help preserve the rest of the army. I could drop a unit of 10 Bowmen to shield the others, and maybe have a few points left for something else, and the tome of furion is mainly just to fill up some points. Dark riders can be swapped for shades or harpies, but I'm not sure which I'd prefer.

    Old list:
    Lord:

Supreme Sorceress w. Sacrificial Dagger: 250 Pts.

    Core:

    20 Crossbowmen w. Musician: 205 Pts

    20 Crossbowmen: 200 Pts

    Special:

8 Shades inc. bloodshade w. great weapons and light armour: 170

    Rare:

    Hydra: 175 Pts.

    Edit: Edited in new list

I think the dagger to be a bad idea in this setup. You are going to sacrifice 10pt models (up to 3 each round) at a low point level.

No banner could be a problem when playing the standards scenario.
Having no shields leaves you with no dedicated combat troops.

Why great weapons? That means you are going to strike last, losing even more (GW) expensive models before killing something.
Sure the extra strength is nice, but that does not help when you have no models to strike.

I'd split one x-bow unit so you can shoot multiple targets, get one warrior or corsair block with standard.
Change the shades to AHW and drop the armour, maybe even the bloodshade.
Get harpies or DR for redirecting / harassing.
If they were not sitting on our land I would not spend a single bolt on the Asur.

i would drop the musician and a single guy our of a crossbow unit and split them into 3 units of 10 and 1 of 9 for the Sorceress to go in.

definetly lose the dagger. what lore do you plan to use? I think metal runs best with DE.

you won`t get the bang for the points your spending in your shades. I think you would be better with a cold one chariot running with your hydra instead of the shades. d6 impacts hits + cold ones would probably do more damage than 8 shades/w GW.

Hope i`ve helped, update us with some games results when you get a chance.

Thanks for the replies, I'm a bit busy atm but I'll make up a new lists and post it when I get the chance.

Bumping because I changed the list in OP.

Honestly at this point level I would consider a Lvl 2 sorceress with tome. You get 3 spells for 100 less points. You can also take some add'l magic items. Lifetaker is good as are defensive items like opal amulet.

Shades are better than dark riders IMO and cheaper. Definitely AHW. Blood shade not necessary.

Consider 2 units of 14 xbows with shields. Much more effective. Also take a musician, it's a great 5pt investment.

Put the sorceress in a unit of spearmen, about 15 should be good for protection take full command and banner of discipline.

Corsairs withAHW and Sea Serpent banner are really good. I would run 14 or 21, with full command.

Not convinced about the chariot. Might be better to spend points elsewhere. Since it can't march it won't keep up with hydra.

Re: Starting 1000 Pt Dark Elves.

I was messing around with the list and thought, what if: spears. All the spears. Would this actually work or am I just being stupid here?

    Hero:

Level 2 Sorceress w. Tome of furion & Opal amulet: 165 Pts (probably shadow for a shot at mindrazoring the spears)

    Core:

40 Spearmen w. musician & standard bearer with standard of discipline: 264 Pts.

14 Corsairs w. full command & sea serpent banner: 190 Pts

    18 Crossbowmen w. shields & musician: 203 Pts

    Rare:

    Hydra: 175 Pts

Alternative with less spears but more corsairs:

    Hero:

Level 2 Sorceress w. Tome of furion: 150 Pts

    Core:

30 Spearmen w. musician & standard bearer with standard of discipline: 204 Pts.

21 Corsairs w. full command & sea serpent banner: 260 Pts

    18 Crossbowmen w. shields & musician: 203 Pts

    Rare:

    Hydra: 175 Pts
