    Reiksguard: discussion

This is the first 'Empire Army' series book I have read. (For some reason Empire theme seemed topical but can't think why... ) Just wondered if anoyone else read this one and what you thought of it?

I thought the story carried me along well enough, I was pleasantly surprised by the plot twist involving one of the main characters since it wasn't what I had expected was coming. The only slight downside for me is I felt the villain characters were not really strong enough or really worthy enough to be the Reiksguard's main adversaries. On balance though I thought it was a worthwhile read.

I enjoyed this one immensely, strongest book in this "series" by a long way IMO.

The author has/had some youtube videos up where he and some friends practised/sketched out some of the fight scenes and IIRC he ran rough simulations of the battle on his computer with some game or other.

EDIT : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVod2faBNYs it was BL videos in fact

Hey not at all bad, a couple of the parries were a bit edgy which is bad but on the whole a decently accurate recreation of historical swordplay. I'm going to have to buy the book now.

Ha! Same. That video sold me on it too. Richard Williams writes some good BL fiction too. His novel Imperial Glory was perhaps the most suitably dark and depressing 40k novel I've read yet while still entirely fitting the background and also being an interesting book all on its own.

Nice video! The book does indeed go into a lot of detail on swordplay and the different strokes used, the writer certainly seems to have done some homework.

There is also a scene about halfway through where the Night Goblin Warboss paraphrases Shakespeare's Richard III. Probably my favourite single moment in the book.
