Thread: Taalfaust- Warhammer Empire in Red & White

Re: Taalfaust- Warhammer Empire in Red & White

Another character who has patiently waited the about 10 years or so for a lick of paint.

Father Willibald the Small- Sigmarite Warrior Priest.

Has anyone else noticed that the latest incarnation of Empire soldiers have been given growth hormone? 6th Ed miniatures are decidedly puny in comparison. This will make unit mixing old and new an interesting challenge.

Next stop- The Mad Company of Poor Houses.

Nice Warrior Priest! It's one of the few 6th edition mini's I don't have in my army...

You are right about the size of Imperial Soldiers, especially the previous State Troops suffer from a considerable size difference. Other models, Greatswords come to mind, are quite comparable with the newer models. Older models (4th and 5th edition) are easier to mix and match with the current range of models...
Check out my Mordheim scenery! NOW! I mean... Please... Only if you want to of course...

    Hey Plastic
Really like your griffon knights, love the paint job. Also the bases are cool. I am planning an alos buying a few. I think I would just put other heads on there, because just like the horse knights they make them look too much like toys. But the is my personal opinion. Love the way you did the armour of the griffons. How did you do it???

Re: Taalfaust- Warhammer Empire in Red & White

    Thanks guys.

@ was1974: The armour of the DGKs was undercoated chaos black. Then it was divided into 2 sections: Red and Gold.

Red- base coat of Khorne red. Then a further base coat on top. (In hindsight I don't think this second step is necessary- but I continued with it for consistency). Then a wash with Chestnut Ink (I think the modern equivalent is Seraphim Sepia- but check that). Then a final highlight just around the edges with Khorne Red again. Wazzdaka Red and Evil Sunz Red were found NOT to be good highlights- Wazzdaka looked pink, and Evil Sunz Red was too orange. Neither of which was the effect I was looking for.

Gold- base coat of Balthazar gold. Chestnut Ink wash. Then several dry brushes of Burnished Gold (new equivalent... unsure). The dry brush became quite heavy at times to get the desired effect.

I guess the key things that I think made the armour stand out- a good paint brush (or brushes!- in my case) and a steady hand. There is a risk of inadvertant pain splashes due to the 'relief' on the armour plates. I also tried to maintain a very thin border of Chaos black around the edges of the 'relief'- further highlighting the gold from the maroon.

I'm certain there are better ways to do the armour- but as I have been stumbling around "trial & erroring"- I found that this works, so I'll maintain it for the remaining DGKs.

Level 99 excrucitation.... 30 rank and file with way too much detail.... 1 per frakkin day turns into like 0.3333 per week. Some SIXTY days later *still* not complete.

One brush stroke at a time.

When it's complete- 3 more to go (and about 31 to finish basing- AND finishing the movement tray)... I'll take photos with THIS.

One thing I noticed which may be of use to novice painters- TEST YOUR VARNISH.

If you look closely there are little white specks on the grass- that is cheap varnish from a $2 shop. I shudder to think what would've happened if I had sprayed that on my models that've taken the best part of 2 months to paint.

    Next up: the BSB.

Battle Standard Bearer- Captain Eusebius Hansaaker.

Very nice models plasticfrog, Good painting the Dark Red and Steel makes for a good contrast on those Demi-Griff models. The feathers on that banner are particularity striking as well.

Re: Taalfaust- Warhammer Empire in Red & White

@ Zoring. Thanks! The standard feathers were the easiest past of the model to paint- surprisingly. Dry brushed some bleached bone equivalent. Really neat effect. I don't dry brush very much anymore as I've found it to be a to be an imprecise way of highlighting, but it worked out quite well.

Next up, the "Koenigs Tiger" dampfpanzer. (still sitting in pieces on my work space).

One month holiday and work being so hectic- it's been AGES since I've been able to do any painting. So I am very happy to present- finished for now anyway- the hammer of House Hansaaker.

    More shots...

And yes, that was the number plate of my much loved car which I totalled earlier on this year. It's spirit shall ever live on- hopefully by ramming into enemy infantry (rather than the bumper of the car in front!).

The engineer and pintle mounted hochland long rifle I've shelved for the time being. I did paint the interior of the turret but for now the hatch will remain closed AND allow the turret to turn a full 360! Why that keg sits on the back of the chassis and interferes with turret turning, I have no idea.

Wow, nice plog! I like that you have a nice darker look to the overall color scheme. I envy your warrior priest, I think that he and the other two from that incarnation are amongst the best wp´s done. Cant seem to find them now a days though...

    Thanks guys!

I have a few things sitting in my display cabinet to finish. If you haven't gathered, I'm not much of a gamer anymore (hence the flagellants)- so I spend my free time painting.

The DGK are actually a bit darker than the scheme for my infantry and army (unintentional but hey- it looked ok so I left it).

Next on the to do list is Prince Freidrich Hansaaker- an unpainted and half assembled empire general on a warhorse that's sat depressed and neglected since The storm of chaos (4 years ago?).

    Prince Freidrich Hansaaker

"I'm a lover, not a fighter... but I'm also a fighter, so don't get any ideas."

After four years of sitting in a box (missing the Storm of Chaos entirely)- he is finally assembled and painted. And photographed....

... Blardy cameras and direct sunlight!!! It displays all the bits that need touching up- especially the base- which I have now redone. Anyway- I've moved on to my next unit so these photos will have to do.

    Side view:

    Other side view:

I am quite happy with him from a table top perspective. The metallic highlights haven't come up very well in the photos where as the non metallic colours have had their highlights exaggerated. To the naked eye, he looks a fair bit neater. I will need to get some proper daylight bulbs for my light box.

Anyway, my next project is chugging along quite nicely: The Hansaaker Lifeguards (Greatswords).

Some good painting here plasticfrog, looks great! The Talabheim red and white looks very nice, present, but not too dominating, good job!
