New Empire 2500 help needed

Fantasy Army: Empire

Hello,

I am totaly new to Warhammer. I just bought the main rule book (hard edition) and picked up the new Empire Army book. I did ALOT of reading . I feel a 2500 point army list is a solid goal to start. I do not own any of the models, for I wanted to create a nice balanced list to play and expand. Here is a 2500 army list I came up with. Advanced warning if i broke a rule and or made something illegal im sorry.

The Arch Lector will go in the unit of Greatswords, the Battle Wizard will go into the unit of halberdiers, the Captain will go into the unit of halberdiers, and the Warrior Priest will go in the unit with the Captain. Any advice would be great because i would like to start the army of the Empire, thanks to all.

Perhaps just a personal bias, but I would never get an arch lector unless hes on a war altar. He is not much better than a priest of 35pts. I would go with a vanilla priest and a general. and put them both in the Greatswords. To make the points I would drop a unit of demigryphs and a cannon and ADD a steam tank. this gives you a mobile cannon and a flanker in 1 unit that is sure to draw firepower away from the swords and last demigryph. You could also make some points by dropping the talisman of prot on the lord, which, if hes ina unit wont really need it. I might also drop the DS and use the 70-80 free points you have and try and boost boost halberd to 50 men so you can have a 10x5x horde if necessary.

Interesting thought, I will look into that. I was wondering if 40 models for the Halberdiers was sufficient. i will see if i con tweak things around. Thanks for the reply.

for a firs build by a new player i feel you have a very solid list. I have never felt a need to run more than 40 men in a unit. if the enemy is bigger make sure you ingage them with your GS. I would find 110 points fro anothe rank of GS. them I would give them a DET, you choice. I like archer for there ability to walk along my troops and fire.
I would make an effort to buff the GS and one core unit niceley and drop the second HB. for xhample A core of 40 HB w20 XB and say 20 Spears. Personally i like 40 spears and 20 HB and20 XB. (Hords of spears defend in 4 ranks.) add Hatred and hold the line you have a rock solid unit. you can even add imunity to psy for 50 points if you like.

I have yet to use the new chariats but I think I will like them. I have never liked playing with the Stank. (Personal pref)

Anothe cpt or General would be nice for the Greatswords.
I like my wizzards with something small and fast.

for a first try, that's a pretty good list.

one thing, i find shooting detachments a bit useless, because can't decide what to do with them. march up with the parent unit? or stay back, and shoot? in which case, why use detachments?

also, find room for steam tank. unbreakable, 1+ armour save, toughenss 6 and 10 wounds? yes please! you can tie up any unit all game, as i have learned on more then occasion.
