Of course it's not his sword ability. He would still have rending with a knife. Just not with a psychic power.... Doesn't invalidate the dakka dakka debate at all. ^^

If he can rend with a knife then why not with his flaming body he's just hitting things with his fists and if the ability applies to only things that exist in the material universe fire does.
Yeah well, in the end it doesn't matter what dakka thinks, it matters what the people I play with think. Also, that debate didn't really come to any clear conclusion. I'm of the mindset that, because the ability happens before close combat starts, it is not close combat, but like I said I'm not the big rules guy in the group, so I'm going to defer to someone else. Regardless of ruling, most of the people I play with play with old codices, so it's not like I'm looking to get an edge. I don't think I'm going to need rending on one guy to pop a wave serpent, then torch its contents
