The Not Really Mutated, but just really Mad Angry Men WoC Thread

Chaos was my first fantasy army. I have cycled through armies in Fantasy and 40k (always selling and regretting then rebuying) and have decided to finally just get a couple armies painted, play them and be satisfied.

My first Fantasy army was the old schoool Chaos army, these guys- I always thought they looked too hunch backed to be menacing, but they taught me the game, followed with Vampire Counts; bought the VCs painted- never figured that army out..

Painting has never been my motivation or strong suit.

Despite my previous statement, I have decided to paint up a WoC army (my first Fantasy army ever) and a Tyranid army for 40k (first 40k army ever). Additionally, I pledge to never sell either army.

Since this is the Fantasy Project log forums, I figure we may as well discuss the Chaos army - although I plan on providing links to the Tyranid plog when it is up and running.

I am not going for a God oriented army as I have in the past; I also am not going to go super gory or overly grim dark. *Surprise I am painting Chaos Horses a color other than* As witnessed in my test model.
I envision my warband as a mercenary group only beginning to feel the whispers of the Chaotic gods. The majority of the models were purchased during seventh, so my army consists of alot of cav:

20 Knights (a mix of new knights and the old metal riders mounted on the newer horses- I may have near 25)
    15 Marauder Horsemen
    60 Marauders with GWs
    30 Chaos Warriors with HW/Shield
    10 Chaos Hounds

I have some other odds and ends I will bring into the log later on- but, please, let me know what you think of my test knight. Like I said, I am painting these to a suitable tabletop standard- I am no Golden Daemon painter and am much more satisfied when I can finish a model in 2 hours rather than 10. I think the scheme will look good in mass...I kinda like the metal armor look as opposed to the flamboyant colors on chaos armies- no offense to that group intended!

Struggling to finish the next two Chaos Knights; they will be the last edition metals on the newers mounts. No Corinthians heads ofcourse, but I will accent with white- most likely on the furs/capes; because this army's fluff is centered around being a band of mercenaries slowly succumbing to the call of Chaos I imagine them as foes of Kislev and the Cult of Ulric. I imagine them in constant conflict with both factions and adorning themselves with pelts of bear and wolf as a mockery to their foes...

    ___________

For an irl moment- I pledge to finish the next two knights by 12:00am EST Tuesday.

Wow. Spent 30 minutes on a reply that disappeared. Goooo Goooo Gadget New Warseer...

Anyhow- you get a much smaller summary now- round shields will be a theme. We prefer mostly swords and axes- and not the over large stuff for weapons!

I want to use as mundane shoulderpads as possible. I hate painting horses; consider the follow picstures like proof of life pictures in a hostage situation- i.e. I said I would paint them and I am working on it.

I just dread I have 15+ more Chaos Knights to paint. BTW- I am in need of Chaos Warrior hand weapons- refer here

lol I always dread painting more than 1 mini. Best advice I can give is add some unit fillers that break up the rank and file. Otherwise, do half the unit, then a character, then the other half.

Anyway, this army has my attention. Always wanted to see unchaotic-ish marauders. I also like the greek/roman vibe with the round shields and plumed helms.

Steal it? Sure! As long as you realize I stole it from here first!

This guy is kind of sloppy- will get touched up in the future, but for now, I am tired of looking at him.

Almost finished up with another Knight and the first 4 Warriors- hope to have them up later this week.

So, I find myself in a quandary- I am somewhat unsatisfied with the speed (or lack there of) I am completing models. Unfortunately, I have had a few- I love subjective words- cocktails. Everyone knows you should not paint miniatures after having cocktails. But then I remembered- you can drybrush and work on bases! So I am. However, I want to show you where I am at with the first four 'test scheme' Warriors. The cloaks are blue, yes; this is going to be an undivided army- and, although I am partial to Tzeentch, I also happen to like blue. I like how the white fur and plumes play of the white bases- I am going for the not so grim, and dark here- remember?

Everything is mostly drybrushing- only manually painted on highlights are boots and cloaks. Armor will get some chainmail highlight and bronze accents. Ironically, this is the most time consuming part and after doing it I feel unmotivated to pick out the smaller details with blurbs of color. I realize this actually won't take too long. Maybe I will finish these four tomorrow. Once the final scheme is decided, the pace should increase. Still not looking forward to the Marauders. Painting skin disagrees with me.

@ mcfishstick, Shadow_Steed and Student, thank you for the kind words.

    The still wip Warriors.

First off, let me say that I absolutely admire your newfound resolution to stick to your guns and get this army painted, despite your misgivings. I have an undead army that has been getting painted at the pace of about one mini every two years, (since they WERE actually called "undead"!) so I can totally understand your desire to get it done quickly. One thing I have found is that nothing gets you motivated to paint more than actually playing a game with your friends. You can always contract them to help you prep models or even paint for you if they're game... something like setting a points value for a game on Sunday and asking two friends to help you finish the basecoats so you can have enough points table ready on Saturday. Just trying to think outside the box for you!

Your models look great as well. I really like the initial concept, and your blue cloaks look great. I'm not crazy about the boots though, the yellowish color reminds me of the standard subcontractor yellow leather boots for some reason, which seems a bit anachronistic to me. ;-) But all the modifying means you've got one great looking, original force! I agree that a bit less grimdarkness is a healthy change for chaos warriors. And the plog title makes me laugh!

To sum up... keep plugging away at it, and use your gaming group for motivation! Break up the big units with smaller goals, stick to a weekly schedule, do anything you have to so that you don't get creatively stifled and it stays fresh. Your army is shaping up to be a thing of beauty, and I'm gonna keep checking up on you!

Oh! And also, before you post anything on Warseer, or ANY web site for that matter, just copy and paste all the text into your clipboard. When things go belly up it's much nicer to be able to hit Control+V than have to remember what you just spent twenty minutes typing. I did it myself several times during this post!

    Good luck.

    ........
I imagined those same boots when painting them, so I am glad they turned out to be representative...

I would have went for a more brown tone, but I figured I wanted to try to stay with the lighter palette..

EDIT: These are so expensive and quite possibly one of the best basing products ever.

Ok- too too long to finish up these Warriors- I had a car wreck a while back and have avoided painting. I have another 12 started so we will see how long that takes...

You know what they say....slow and steady...

Anyhow, I finished up two more knights and figured I would post a group shot of all 4 knights together.

    Thanks guys.

Hey 'Seers. Been a little bit but I have finished up 6 GW Marauders.

And, after painting them, I think I have managed to make them look even more like professional wrestlers than normal...

C&C is welcome and appreciated. OP is now accepting insults are acceptable criticism...

And closer up against a white background...
