Re: sometimes the game just kicks you in the teeth

I had a Lord of Change able to second turn charge my brothers only wizard, a level 4 Great Bray Shaman with no ward save, so did it thinking that 5 strength 6 attacks plus thunderstomp should kill him in one turn, allowing me to overrun and avoid being charged by his block of bestigors. Naturaly I failed to kill him, causing only 1 or 2 wounds, and he held. Next turn I was charged by the nasty horde who manged to beat me and cause me to pop through instabiity. I did manage to kill the wizard, but at the cost of my general, so was not impressed. I also did managed to win the game, mainly through some lucky rounds with flesh hounds, one unit of which managed to kill a full health Ghorgon in combat in two rounds after surviving attacks and thunderstomp.

I was playing vc against a friend's ogres and 2nd turn ran a 5 dog unit of dire wolves into the flank of his mournfang cav, hoping to slow them down for a turn. I managed to hit a couple of times, landed 1 wound, he failed his 3+ save and then proceeded to roll 1's and 2's on all of his ogre and mournfang attacks, then a 9 on his leadership test. 400+ pts of mournfang fled from 40 pts worth of dire wolves who did a single wound. I still lost the match, but those dogs got mvp.

Horde of dwarf warriors gets into combat with a horde of bloodletters with a herald and skulltaker....
Had already hit the unit with some shooting, reducing it down to just below 20 models.
Killed all but one bloodletter in the first round, Killed the herald and last bloodletter and put a wound on skulltaker in the second (and he passes his 5+ LD test)...
Next round i completely fail on all my attacks, fail my LD test and the 25 remaining models flee from skulltaker on one wound....

I'm sure others have run into it as well, but in the watchtower scenario I lost the game to two chaos warriors holding the tower despite there being nothing left of my opponent's army.

This one isnt one that kicked me in the teeth, but this one time a treeman charged my 5 dark elf crossbowmen and failed all hits, I did 2 wounds back, it failed its stubborn break test, fled and was run down.....i found it quite funny

Reminds me of a 4000 point of massive magic in the last edition me and my brother went to square off with. He was mixed chaos Tzeench, and I was HE. I was thinknig I may get handed in the magic phase so took several magical defence items. Well my brother had first turn and his big bad lvl 4 DP first attempted cast blows himself off the board. His second mage miscast and loses all magic levels. He called it there with no magic defence left and looking across and decked out magic and fully intact lines lol. I was laughing so badly, he wasn't so amused until the next day.

Just had 3.5k Storm of Magic game.

Second turn, my Lvl 4 Hierophant miscast (using 3 dice no less), losing 1 wizard level (normal miscast), and then moved 19inches straight across the table landing 1 inch away from a 4 rank long unit of bloodletters. He did not survive the next turn

Yeah i played a game yesterday actually with my dwarfs vs chaos at 2.5k points. He setup is unit of 35 chosen, needless to say he won, i couldn't do anything to that block and he literally marched right through me, was considering putting my dwarf lord at the front and the hammerers in a line but i decided not to.
I'll tell you what mate; the fact that you've gotten 100% positive replies on Warseer of all places is as sure a sign as any that you should start the army.

Knowledge: Know your own and opponents armies rules and units.
Experience: Good grasp of tactics and how rules impact on this.
Luck: At least getting an average deal from the dice.
Psych: Sometimes you can convince the opponent they are facing an uphill battle.

Playing against dwarves with a goblin army. Dwarves get the first turn and destroy a few chariots in my battle line (back when strength 7 hits one shot chariots). This triggered waves of panic that left me without a single unit on the field before I even had a turn. Every single unit panicked, every single unit ran right of the board.

Also a Storm of Magic battle, my Fey Enchantress casts the Frog curse spell, she casts it with irresistable force.
So all enemy mages (including a Great Unclean One, which was fighting in combat) Poof into magic. The miscast zapped every T2 Frog Mage on the table, the battle became quite one dimensional after that.

The Great Unclean Frog, survived two rounds of combat trough chaos intervention, but popped eventually.

Half the army choices consist out of Peasants and Damsels.

I can't remember the specifics of the game (it was a beer and board affair, with emphasis on the beer), but I do remember I was trying out a Skaven gunline list, with multiple WLCs, PWMs etc spread throughout my deployment.

Everything misfired first turn, with horrendous consequences. The WLCs fired through my own ranks, my PWMs exploded poisoning my Clanrats. Skaven sabotage I say!

Not every battle is about sheer casualties. Many are about holding onto an objective until help arrives.
