I think there's a difference between merely conceding a game that is hopeless and walking away from a game, that seems to imply something other than merely losing prompting you to leave the table.

I'm not really keen on the idea of conceding a game. I've been slaughtered on the tabletop more times than I've slaughtered, but it always seemed to me to be the height of bad manners to jack it in just because you were going to lose. I know one of the things that irritated me playing Bloodbowl online was people who would quit if they went two points down. It's not victory nor defeat until the game is finished. It's not like chess because the game has a more or less fixed end. Finally it seems to me that if you want to play a game that is only about the winning or losing, then you should play chess. Wargaming is at least partly about the heroic last stand, the death and glory charge with a belt full of melta bombs, the hit and runs tactics of a retreating force.
To each their own I suppose.
I situations like that I'd carry on. It's when the other side has retrieved the mission objective and has carried it to the back of their deployment zone, leaving me to somehow fight past the rest of his army, retrieve the maguffin and make it back to my own board edge that I admit the obvious. There's a difference between playing for a heroic last stand and timewasting.![]()
I have only ever walked away from one game - about 8 or so years ago, and it wasn't because I thought the game was lost. it was turn 3 or 4 and things were pretty even, it was a good game.
Some kid dropped a load of minis on the floor beside me and I went to help him pick them up, took me a minute or so. I went back to the game and as I was assaulting his terminators I noticed that there was five of them, I was pretty certain I'd killed 2 of them but he said I was mistaken, I looked around the table and i thought one of his tactical squads had been moved back a couple of inches out assault range, and his scouts were now inside a ruined building on the left flank when they had been in a forest about 8 inches toward centre.
The tactical squad and the terminators were dicey, I wasn't 100% on them but the scouts I was dead certain about cos I had been planning on cutting through that building with one of my own units.
I called him on it and he denied it all. I packed up right there, I don't play cheaters.
As for conceding defeat, I personally prefer to play to the last man, you never know when the dice will go your way and give you that epic win you talk about for years! but I certainly wouldn't consider it bad manners if my opponent conceded defeat.

Only time I've walked away from a game: I started feeling very, very sick. I explained, apologised to my opponent, and went home. I made it just in time to start throwing up and less mentionable things... That was 9 at night, and I was still throwing up at 5 in the morning. Turned out I had gastroenteritis. A good excuse for leaving, I guess, and, damn, but I was winning as well.
7th ed, Wood Elf close combat army VS bunkered up Dwarfs with Anvil and 2 Organ guns.
Had my army shot to **** and crushed by the anvil before I even got close.
The Anvil destroyed two units of Wardancers in a turn and the Organ Gun auto-hit my units even in the woods.
Politely surrendered on turn 3 after killing 4 Dwarf Warriors and losing 3/4 of my army.

I have walked away from a game of BB when I was working at Cribbs Causeway. The guy I was playing with had clearly made up his team as he had no clue of how it worked or the rules. After 45 minutes in which we had only managed 4 turns I called an end as I had to go home after a long day in store. When he complained I made a point of challenging him about his experience which, fortunately, the manage backed me up on.
Funnily enough we didn't see him again.

Some Latin inspiration: Nec Aspera Terrant; Hoc Locus Stercus Est
And some memorable quotes: 'Never forget that the entire point of this game is shooting girly elves.' (Dr Potamus); 'Hooray, it's another sunny day on WhineSeer.' (Darnok); 'this might shock you, but even this hobby is filled with idiots...'(Botjer)
Other than time constraints, I only nearly walked away from even starting a game, at a tournament, when I found out I was going to face a guy that, and I am sorry for saying this, just smelled that bad....
But I stuck it out, and actually got used to it after a while.
I'm still not sure if me getting used to that was a good thing or not.
I've walked away from a game not because I was frustrated with my opponent or because I was losing badly, but because I had other more important responsibilities that I had to attend to. I felt pretty bad about it, and try to schedule my gaming time so that kind of thing doesn't happen.
Conversely, whether it's me or my opponent I'd say a fair number of games that we play get called early - in the interest of time and squeezing in another round or two we will frequently concede a game if they writing's on the wall. This is in a casual game though, in a tournament even if I was losing badly I'd play out the rest of the match.
I threw a game of blood bowl in a tournament once to get it over and done with. The bloke I was playing was close to deranged. He lived in a caravan on the coast and travelled to play in blood bowl tournaments sometimes. I could not get away from the table fast enough. Sad as I am sure he needs serious help but I could only feel uncomfortable and creeped out by him.

Ive never walked away from a game, even in 7th ed with a demon player always pre-measuring stuff (so cheating) i stayed and made sure i beat him.
There are games that even the i am clearly winning/losing i always try to play it till the end, one that happened a few days ago against empire. His turn one and his cannons kill both my iron blasters and he dwellers my iron gut horde meaning half my army was gone, so instead of moaning (had a bit of a laugh that ive never even got to fire them before as it was my first game as OK but hopefully it didnt come across as moaning) knowing i wasnt winning the game i set myself 2 goals for the match, kill all his heros which i did bar one warrior priest and kill one of the two steam tanks, which i got down to one wound. Sure i lost but it was funny
Of course we do sometimes have to end games early due to time limits as we are usually playing till 1am anyway and sometimes we are only on turn 3 by then so call it a day.
2013 OK lost count
The only time I have packed away early is against a guy in BFG, he just complained about everything. My list, my strategy and every dice roll I made was "So lucky" I just wasnt an enjoyable game (it was a game in the balance), so I asked him to tone it down a bit, he didnt so I packed my models up and went home.
I packed up my kit when a fat overgrown and underwashed schoolboy type decided it was acceptable to ping my painting prize winning Battle Sisters over when they got killed and scream "DEAD!" at the top of his voice for the amusement of his gaggle of groupies laughing through their bared teeth.

I can't ever remember walking away from a game.
I have made suicidal moves to end a game quickly as I couldn't stand playing my opponent much longer.
A very stereotypical English approach I suppose.

I've only walked away from one game ever. After he completed his turn, my opponent would go over and watch his friend play his game, which ment I had to continuely shout for him to take his saving throws or leadership tests. Each turn was taking forever, because of this. After about the third turn, I just couldn't put up with it anymore and packed up my army.
I play the game as much for the interaction with my opponent, as I do the interaction on the table, between the armies we are playing.
I've walked away from a game due to an opponent (a GW staff member no less!) cheating blatantly and outrageously.

I've never walked but I have admitted defeat more times than I care to remember...mostly during 8th edition fantasy as I've stubbornly refused to change my play style....which makes a victory all the more enjoyable

I've never walked from a game, but I would rather concede if it's obvious what's going to happen. Equally I'd hope my opponent would do the same thing (if he's not enjoying himself) because it's just not fun otherwise.
