Finally got it working at 0400 last night (not all Blizzards fault, crappy internets and updating gpu driver added time).
Managed to get a Wizard to the Skeleton King before my mobile broadband crapped out; but at least it gave me an excuse to get some sleep before work today.

I had played the F&F Beta but not since, so a lot has changed since then.
Mostly for the better. I miss my companion scrolls.

And that, right there, is why making "always on-line" games is such a bad idea. Quite frankly, I'm surprised that gamers will accept it...

I played the hell out of single player D2 (including playing coop with LAN), and never really played online as I had no interest in people I didn't know.
I would prefer to continue that experience on D3.

So while I know the stated reason for it is to stop exploits, etc. I do think they could handle it better.
Perhaps only logging onto server at start of game to grab characters and at end to save characters, when they can then be verified valid.

Long story, short is that you are right, I agree with you, but considering the alternative it to not play...

Hell I play 40k which is like the real world version of a bad idea that works because the fanbase are willing to put up with a lot of carp.

I played the hell out of single player D2 (including playing coop with LAN), and never really played online as I had no interest in people I didn't know.

I played D2 online a couple times, met a couple people I liked, and we ended up playing round and round for over a year finally, I reached lvl 81 on my paladin before stopping xD Diablo gets way more epic in coop, really, I'll probably go an play directly online when I get it.

I got on at lunchtime for a little bit and played a monk. Its pretty cool. This is taking the piss though.

I am sad that I can't play with a Paladin. Not my first character in D2 (Necro), but the first one I truly loved

Bowazon was a lot of fun, and after all those characters got wiped due to account inactivity, I later enjoyed tossing javelins and lightning bolts around until the entire screen was just filled with lightning effects. I think I bought 3 copies of the game (including 2 battlechests) in the end, as I'd always want to play it again after losing my cd keys.

I sent my unemployed roommate off to find me a copy of the game this morning while I went to work and I'm looking forward to starting up a character, likely Demon Hunter as the combination of Amazon/Assassin looks more interesting than the others.

Yep, lvl 20 wizard now, but decided to grab something to eat and leave the game while doing so. Now I can't create a new game because the servers are overloaded .

Same. Though in fact I played a paladin because it was the closest you could get from the D1 warrior... D3 has pulled even farther from him I don't like barbarians >< Guess I'll play demon hunter too. I tried the barbarian during the beta, and it wasn't very thrilling.

I have been able to get on the servers but only very late at night. 2300+.
Hopefully by the end of the week, people will be over the initial thrill and letting other people on.
