but there are others out there that field tau or tyranids (ok maybe not at adepticon, but since when is adpeticon the by all and end all of tournies?). I have seen chaos lists win tournies w/o the rhinospam and lash sorc/princes. he used bikes.. granted nurgle bikers, but hard to pull off nontheless. (also on topic for this thread.. i hate bikes but when chaos doesnt have scouts, i can abide them ;P)

Comp score helps and hinders competitions... on one hand you have a balanced friendly competition, where everyone has a fair chance to win, have fun, be sportsmanlike. But it also ruins competitions, as people have had to have a fully painted to a high quality army, spending months (or years in some cases) on getting details right, then min/maxing, learning to play their list.. playing a hundred games or more against others with similar cheesey broken lists, learning play styles of armies and what to expect in the meta of their area, and what to expect in the tournie they are attending, what past winners did to win, what scenarios that are likely to turn up and in what order.. are there restrictions liks 1hq and no heavy support allowed (wasnt a fun compo when chaos cant take oblits)...

and after all this, they turn up on the day.. and comp scores are there allowing a half painted army to win.

if there is money or a prize greater than a small trophy involved, comp scores should be left alone with.. or at least the competition be held over two days... first day is the fun friendly day.. second day is the serious players.

also back on topic... bikes suck and you take scouts hehe
erm, there is much more skill in winning with a BALANCED army. About 20% of the score is allocated to painting, so if the army is not painted you don't win.

Comp actually makes it more competitive IMO.

you can still win with 80%, as some people who build "balanced" lists, do it in the cheesiest ways.. not enough to dock points, but enough to still win.

"those av13 fall apart the second they take their first penetrating hit and aren't cheap"

still need to get the pen.. str 8 does it on 4's.. 50% failure rate, and str 9 on 3's and not many lascannons in 1k or really want to waste those points on. and sure as hell very little str 10's around

and i lolled at the no anti-tank... ITS NECRONS THEY GLANCE ON 6'S!!!! dont have to wreck you.. immobilise is just enough
The squad is a bit of a problem becuase they turbo boost or outflank, and also cause their my space wolves meaning I don't run 3 x 6 long fangs (I have to admit, with outflank it would seem like 3 long fang squads wouldn't bother them to much). I'm not suggesting the unit is OP just that its a tough unit the few times I've played againist it.

Comp just changes whats competitive, if the players are taking similiar lists with the "OP" armies then skill is gonna be just as important. I'm not saying Comp is bad but it isn't a cure all either.

    We need a match-maker to 40k...
Many online Multiplayer games have one and it works on most occasions. Rarely have I wandered into a World of Tanks game where the teams were Totally unbalanced and if you know that game, its match maker is constantly yelled at for being broken...

How that would be done, I don't know because I'm not a professional 40k player by a long shot, but I do know that that would fix many issues...

More than anything people have to talk about what they want to get out of the game first, and be flexible.

No it makes it different competitive. Different in that it's not purely about being the best player with the best army - which is the only thing that should matter in a serious competitive environment.

No you only need to be flexible if you don't have enough opponents that suit you. I'd rather not be flexible, and if someone wants a fluffy/balanced/casual game I'll pass and not play. Someone else will want that sort of game, whereas I'd rather not play and read a book. It's why I won't play in GW stores, etc because it's not the sort of game I am looking for, and they mostly wouldn't enjoy it either. There's no shortage of opponents though, and I could get several games a night every night if I wanted, and had the time.

Casual players should definitely play other casual players, and competitive players the same - no good comes from either side of mixing it up.

Unless you live somewhere very remote there is no shortage of both competitive and casual players, dozens even in a small town, and hundreds in a small city. If you look for them, they are there.
