I've had good experiences with the Dettol method.

Place miniatures in an inert container (I use a glass biscuit jar).
Cover with a good amount of dettol (the original recipe stuff only as it contains both the pine oil and sodium hydroxide that do the stripping)
    Leave overnight.
Scrub miniatures with a cheap toothbrush and either new dettol or dish soap (fairy original is my preference). Adding water to the dettol paint mix makes a really sticky mass that takes a lot more effort to scrub.
Leave miniatures to air dry for at least 24h. The dettol method will take metal back to the original state, and it will take the primer off plastic although there's usually a bit of staining.
Once the model has been resprayed the smell is usually barely detectable.
