As to the topic of tales I think they could be good for some but I'm quite sure they're not for me. I don't like deadlines, and if I had them for my hobby it wouldn't be a hobby any more, but more like work. Still, good luck with it.

@sigur I couldn't agree more. That's the best part of historical wargaming for me as well, I'm merely implying that the amount of background-reading required might be offputting for people who are not die-hard fans of, say, the napoleonic period but still feel like giving historical gaming a go. I think historical wargaming has a great educational potential that lies pretty much untapped, but there is still the obstacle of obscurity and a lot of hard work to overcome.

I'd go with making a sign on thread to start on the first months stuff in June, with skirmish guys aiming to finish for Christmas and full size armies aiming to finish for next June
You might even want to include links to various manufacturers, WAB 2.0, SAGA, Clash of Empires, Warlord Games etc, and say that there is an awful lot of stuff out there for historicals now. Throw it open to a variety of scales as well, as there are plenty of people out there with warmaster ancients stuff they still haven't finished.
For painting a skirmish force or an army, you just need to get a unit/character/war machine/whatever done a month. For Saga that is one to four guys. For Legends of the Old West it can be one guy.
I think I might be able to manage that.
Well I crumbled and bought the Fireforge mounted Sergeants today. Gives me 12 Teutonic Knights, and 12 Mounted Sergeants. I'm not sure about the Templars, as from the box art and history the Teutonic Knights seem cooler. Also in WAB 12 mounted knightly order is 500 points and two boxes is literally half the army.
On the other hand a quick look on the Forgeworld website tells me it will be £60 to update my rulebook and copy of Armies of Antiquity. If I wanted to do Dark Age skirmishing with SAGA that's £25 and another £12 for another 4 warband lists.
I've been tinkering with ideas for a skirmish to mass battles system for a while, so I think it's time to put pen to paper and write a free rules set.
My SAGA rule book just came in the mail today.
I think you can make a Saga force out of one box of Norman Knights plus one character model. Can you confirm that?

Yeah, that would be an interesting project. I love the Ferdinand/Elefant.
So do I – they’re some of the very best anti-tank guns you can get.
However, the army is severely lacking in every other department. I honestly cannot see it doing very well if forced to attack dug-in veteran infantry or having to slug all the way across the table.
Also, once you’ve paid for the HQ and the obligatory combat company you’re getting close to the first 1000 points, leaving very little for anything else.
It’s an army, I think, that will never truly shine and can’t really be played at less than 1750 points.
But it sure would look cool on the table...
If you wanted to do this army seriously I think you’d be better of playing it as a straight up Grenadier company with Elephant and Brumbär support, representing situations where parts of Panzerjäger-Regiment 656 was deployed in support of grenadiers.
The 553. were occasionally deployed en masse though, and that’s when you’d see all those nifty vehicles... And those are, of course, what makes that particular army so interesting...

No reason you can't collect it though. If you've got people willing to play big FoW games, or who have a formation of Russian super heavies to balance the points out on the other side of the table, no reason not to use it. It's a friendly play army, not a tournament army.
I've undercoated Sir Badass, and will do him as a test model. I'll do all 24 horses together (will split up depending on what colour I'm doing the horses, but all the saddles etc will be done together). If I do the horses before June that actually takes a lot of pressure off, because they're the thing that will take the longest.
Absolutely true. This is more of a for-fun-and-for-painting-and-converting army than a tournament army.
Not that I play in tournaments anyway...
I’ve got a book on the history of the Schwere-Heers-Panzer-Abteilung 503 en route as we speak. Another army that I really want to collect. I mean: who don’t like masses of King Tigers? As far as I know, the new D-Day book has a list for them but, in all honesty, I’m more interested in what happened on the Eastern Front.
Not that D-Day and the Western Front wasn’t important. But it was the Eastern Front that saw the titanic battles of the war and the complete destruction of entire armies. It was, in truth, where WWII was ultimately decided.
Mind you, they were also present on that front, although that would be with the early Tiger I’s during the Kursk battles. And playing Tigers during mid war is sheer lunacy...

The Eastern front is by far the more interesting one. The statistic I keep seeing is that the Russians inflicted 90% of the Germans military casualties and 10% of their civilian casualties, and the Allies inflicted 10% of their military casualties and 90% of the civilians.
Basically the western front was a bit of a sideshow, and the biggest battles are all on the Eastern front, along with the most interesting tanks.
I was thinking about converting these to use as Knights Hospitaller (and have one of each knightly order) in what would be substantially less detailed conversions than yours. I'm loving the chainmail facemask thing.
Would you not be better off with Fireforge's Templar Knights or their mounted Sergeants?

Templar Knights I'll use for Templar Knights. Sergeants will be sergeants. I fancied having each order and having them look significantly different, and the Hospitallers in older style armour would do that.

Clocks in at 1872 points. I don't know what that would be in WAB 2nd edition, but that's not a lot of units. If I went all military order I'd barely scrape 4 decent units in below 2000. Shortest tale of painting ever.
I'm going to put some serious effort into writing my own mass battle rules. Plus I've played IGOUGO for 20 years, it's time to change it up.
Oh I see. Would you sculpt caparisons on, a' la PsychosisPC, or would you leave the horses as is?
