    Deff Dread and Kanz Commission

Well, I had to put some of my competition/joy projects on hold, but it was for a good cause. Someone commissioned me to work on a few Killa Kanz and a Deff Dread. The patron asked for my "Gaming Standard" level painting, so I set to work. He basically gave me creative license to paint the lot as I see fit, but made one unique request: include Space Marine insignia, particularly Ultramarines, on various parts of the models. Apparently his clan of Orks are very envious of the Astartes and seek to replicate their imagery, while also looting what bits they can from them in battle.

My goal was to achieve a very worn and rusted effect in order to contrast with the bright blues and white representative of the Sons of Macragge. Without further ado, here's the Dread, completed except for the base:

Again, this was my "Gaming Standard," which I consider to be table top quality. The base needs to be finished, and I will dig into the Kanz soon. We had a crazy week thus far with the release of Diablo III, and preparations for an upcoming Magic: the Gathering Grand Prix in Minneapolis. I also had some delays on this (and other) projects because of some strenuous family situations.

Anyway, I accept commissions, so feel free to give me a holler if you have a project in mind. Thanks for viewing!

That's looking pretty fancy for a gaming standard!

    Lovely Deff Dread!
I particularly like the different metal tones.
    The rusty steel looks fantastic.
I was wondering, could you tell me how you painted the white facemask?
I would like to try something similar.

I hear that a lot. I don't say that immodestly, it's just that I am picky about what I would play on the table top. I certainly feel, and have seen that there are simpler, quicker, and more efficient ways to achieve an effective look for the gaming table, but this is just a personal OCD-thing for me.

Not a problem. The face mask was fortunately pretty easy and I'm sure you can achieve the same look. I'm not sure what the new equivalents are, but I basically used Khemri Brown, Dheneb Stone, and Skull White. Very simple progression, perhaps 4 or 5 steps. The less white you use, the more contrast you will get on the sharp highlights which helps it "pop" on the table top. You can also do a few shade passes with Mournfang Brown (Scorched Brown) in the deepest crevices for extra contrast.

Sorry for such a delay. Tons of family stuff STILL going on.

Anyway, here's what the Kanz looked like when finished too.
