Yup grid lines of the fed Frisbee, the unwashed ones do look better. Wonder about the way I did some Peg Knights, white primer, VGC "Pale grey wash" then white drybrush.

SFB is a good game, and despite what people say its not hard or slow to play.. but the quarter inch card counters are hardly visually exciting, a few of these could be a great help.

Well single ship actions aren't too bad, but try doing 10 ships vs 10 ships... generally takes all weekend, especially if you get fighters/heavy drone users involved. I did plenty of large actions in my young and dumb days but I don't have that kind of time anymore, which is why I like ACTA:SF so much.

Never had a problem with four/five ship squadrons per side in three/four way games, larger as well - only thing that really slowed them down was adding minefields. Just needed players who would get on with it.

Needed the right players though, taking it too seriously really slowed it down

I have to say, I really love this game, it plays incredibly smoothly and is much faster than other miniatures games to play. Mind you, fleet based game wise my only comparison is Battle Fleet Gothic [on an unrelated note, is my favorite gw game ever made] but that doesn't change the fact that this game is incredibly fun. Played a game with a buddy up at my FLGS and after about fifteen minutes of stumbling around we were trading phaser fire and photons [and my plasma torpedoes] like pros. The whole game took about an hour and a half with two Romulan SparrowHawks against two Federation Constitutions [i chose to ignore cloaking] and I'm sure that with some more practice and better familiarization with the rules that we will be playing 1k points games in two hours or less.

We did learn that the Federation Commander tokens translate really well into the game rules [i was the only one with models at the time] and that plasma torps and photons are absolutely devastating if allowed to hit their targets. my opponent plays Federation commander and really liked the fact that you can play a, comparatively, giant fleet against another one in a much shorter amount of time. He was so impressed with the game that on my way out of the store he was in the process of having the owner order one of the big Klingon fleet boxes.

The only reason i will only have 800 pts of Romulans when he finishes painting them is the fact that i have a trip to Virginia that i need to save money for and the fact that I am having trouble 'unlearning' my BFG habits.

I mean, How can one expect me to bring frigates when i can bring cruisers? [not the most strategic mindsets, but come on]

Sweet, another recruit. You able to attend Origins? I am running 4 games there. Plus some adhoc games should be run in the Star Fleet Universe area upstairs in the "D" wing rooms.

You need frigates to use as initiative sinks (er, sacrificial lambs) to enable the bigger ships to move last).

Have you joined us over at the Mongoose ACTA forums yet?

I won't be able to make it to Origins, as much as i would love to go, but i'll be sure to snatch up any photos you guys get out.

I haven't really thought about that, i'm sure my strategies will develop and condition me better to the idea of frigates.

And I made an account on the mongoose forums but haven't posted anything, but i do lurk around and follow the more interesting topics.

Some stuff to be used in my upcoming Origins games:

A Shapeways "Research Station" substituting for a Starline 2500 Federation Battle Station (not available yet):

Bottom showing the blue Warp Reactor cooling:

A Shapeways "Small Freighter" substituting for the Starline 2500 Small Freighter (not available yet):

The shading on the Research Station didn't come out like I wanted, but was too hard to repair so I left it as is. Not noticeable at 2 feet anyways.

One of the selling points for Federation Commander was the following question - "Did anyone ever really finish a Fed CV vs Klingon C8V duel with full escorts?"

    :P
