Yeah, I mean I get that some people are absolutely dedicated RAW players, and that there is a point where RAI begins to get very fuzzy (many of the arguments I've read on what steadfast for detachments is supposed to mean fall into that trap) but there has to be a basic sniff test for RAW. Once you're at the point where no-one is going to pick up the technicality in a straight forward reading of the book, and instead it needs a very clever reading of the exact wording of two seperate rules, and reaches a conclusion with absolutely no jusitification in fluff or game balance considerations, then no matter how logically your position holds together, it fails the sniff test.

I believe it was discovered by Grotsnot over on TWF, and he has a pretty good reputation about finding weak links in the rules to send to Nottingham on behalf of the forum as semi-official FAQ material.

I'm sorry, but where that bonkers about necessary presence of another character in detachment to get HtL comes from? Do I have some exceptional copy of the book or just missing something?
The rule itself say that it kicks in "If a character with this rule [is present]". A Witchhunter in a detachment is such a character if the parent contains a Captain/General because he then has HtL (mind you, nobody claims it doesn't transfer).

I seriously, outside of deserved face slapping twisting of words, I cannot see any other interpretation than one of HtL. It really is black and white.

There's nothing wrong with the power level of the book which seems to be quite well-balanced for 8th edition, the problem with it is that the internal balance is horrific, and a third of the units are useless and not worth taking.

Typical Jeremy Vetock book, in other words.

Typical cruddace book you mean? He ruins nids, give TK bad internal balance, turns the IG into horrific broken monsters and now this? The man should just stop with the books already! :P

I'm having no problems with the vats majority of units. Its only a couple of units I can only see me using in specific situations which is a vast improvement on last edition when the entire army was almost useless against most armies; but that had as much to do with the core rules as it did the army books.
