The Saga of Rylak Foestrider and the Wolves of Tra

Ok, my local gaming club is starting up a 40k League, so I've decided to finally build my Space Wolf army, having been thinking about it for well over a year now.

The finer details of the fluff are still being being worked out, but the basic story behind my army is that my Wolf Lord, Rylak Foestrider is travelling the galaxy with his Great Company, trying to avenge his fallen master, who was slain by a Deamon Prince long ago. So far the Prince of Chaos has eluded his blade and the irony is that he always will - the Deamon Prince in question is actually the leader of my CSM's, so they'll never meet on the field of battle.

Every model in the army will have fluff written for them and a saga that will grow as I game with them. As an aspiring writer, I take great pleasure in extensively mapping out the backstory for my armies, so expect a lot of background material being posted up as i finish painting each model,

Anyway on to the models themselves...

First up is my Bjorn the Fell Handed, made from a Contemptor Dreadnought.

I've always felt that he should be in a Contemptor Chassis anyway, as he comes from the Heresy era, so when I picked one up at the last UK GD, he seemed the logical choice to build. Also, it makes him stand out a lot more than the awful Finecast model GW have put out for him.

He's nearly done but there's still some detailing to do. The base in particular is annoying me, but that should be changed soon.

I've also built my first Thunderwolf.

Still deciding whether or not to turn him into my Wolf Lord or use him as the leader of the Thunderwolf unit. Most likely he'll end up as Rylak, as it's pretty much how I pictured him when dreaming up this army, minus a beard (green stuff time )

I know it's not much of a start, but what do people think so far?

Was in GW today and bought Njal Stormcaller on a whim. He's not in my list, but having had another look over his rules, I think I'm going to work him in. He seems to support it perfectly.

Now I painted the grey on Bjorn with a recipe I got off a guy at a tournament last year, but with the release of the new GW paints I don't think that I'll be able to replicate it across the whole army, considering I'm not even entirely sure what all the new names for the old colours are.
Instead the colour scheme I'm trying on Njal is Etherium Blue over a black undercoat, then a light Badab Black wash. I'm quite liking the result, but I'll reserve judgement until I've done all the details. If it works out well though, I'll use it across the whole army.

Another thing I'm looking forward to is testing the new GW textures on his base. I'm quite cynical about these, but I may be proved wrong.
At the end of the day, there's only one to find out, so I'll let you know

Re: The Saga of Rylak Foestrider and the Wolves of Tra

Ok, so tried working Njal into my existing list, but it didn't work, so I've worked out two separate lists, each with a different theme.

Company of Tra - 1750 points

This is the one I'm going to be using in most games, themed around the backstory I've got planned for the army. It's fairly casual, but hopefully it'll pack quite a punch

    Jarl Rylak Foestrider
Wolf Lord with Runic Armour, Frostblade, Storm Shield, Wolf Tooth Necklace, Thunderwolf, 2 x Fenrisian Wolves and Saga of the Warrior Born

    Njal Stormcaller

    The Tundra Wolves
5 x Wolf Scouts, Meltagun, Wulfen, 2 x Plasma Pistols

    Harald Deathstalker
Lone Wolf with Mark of the Wulfen

    The White Wolves
10 x Grey Hunters, 2 x Plasma Guns, Power Weapon, Wolf Standard, Wulfen

    The Sky Runners
10 x Grey Hunters, 2 x Plasma Guns, Power Weapon, Wolf Standard, Wulfen

    The Void Stalkers
2 x Thunderwolves, 1 with TH and SS, 1 with Mark of the Wulfen

    The Blackfangs
    8 x Fenrisian Wolves, Cyberwolf

    Wolf's Bite
    Vindicator

    Wolf's Bane
    Vindicator

    Long Fang Pack 'Hurricane's Howl'
    5 x Long Fangs, 4 x Missile Launchers

    Old B*stards list - 1750 points

This is probably what I'm going to use as my league list, not because I feel it's particularly cheesy, but at least it stands a chance against the lists I've seen emerging.

There's a simple theme behind the list. It's a collection of some of the oldest, and toughest warriors in the chapter (minus Logan, who's going in when i expand to 2000pts).

    Njal Stormcaller

    Bjorn
    Plasma Cannon

    Ancient Hrothgar
Dreadnought, Heavy Flamer, Plasma Cannon, Wolf Tooth Necklace

    Ancient Karjac
Dreadnought, Heavy Flamer, Plasma Cannon, Wolf Tooth Necklace

    The White Wolves
10 x Grey Hunters, 2 x Plasma Guns, Power Weapon, Wolf Standard, Wulfen

    The Sky Runners
10 x Grey Hunters, 2 x Plasma Guns, Power Weapon, Wolf Standard, Wulfen

    The Black Manes
10 x Grey Hunters, 2 x Plasma Guns, Power Weapon, Wolf Standard, Wulfen

    Long Fang Pack 'Hurricane's Howl'
    5 x Long Fangs, 4 x Missile Launchers

    Wolf's Bane
    Vindicator

    Wolf's Bite
    Vindicator

Re: The Saga of Rylak Foestrider and the Wolves of Tra

Ok long time no post, but unfortunately real life got in the way of my hobby. Hopefully I'll actually be able to focus on my Space Wolves now everything's calmed down.

While I don't have any marines to show you just yet, I was going through my boxes of spare sprues today and found some Cadians and Space Wolf sprues lying around, so I decided to experiment. The result was a small squad of Fenrisian Huskaerls to support my Wolves.

For those of you who don't know, the Huskaerls are featured in Battle for the Fang and are essentially PDF regiments raised from Fenris to man the Fang and occasionally fight alongside the Vlka Fenryka off-world. I'm going to use them as an allied IG Veteran squad, led by a converted Commissar Lord, mounted in a Vendetta, giving me cheap scoring to dump on a quiet objective, leaving my Grey Hunters to do what they do best: crush the enemies of Russ!

I like how they've turned out, considering they were just just a simple head swap. They look like they could be troops from Fenris, while still managing to have a more uniform appearance than my Space Wolf packs (they are Imperial Guard after all). At some point I'm going to do a shop on a bitz website to get the parts for the rest of the squad. I might see if I can get hold of some cloaks to put on them too, but I'll see how the finished squad looks without them first.

What do you guys think of them?

    I'll post more soon

Re: The Saga of Rylak Foestrider and the Wolves of Tra

So here's Hrogar, my first WIP member of the Grey Hunter Pack 'The White Wolves'. As I've already said, every model and pack in the army is going to be named and have their own saga. I'll post his fluff up once he's finished.

I don't like the look of the 'Eavy Metal paint job for the Space Wolves, so I've gone for a darker, Pre Heresy-style scheme for him, using a basecoat of Space Wolves grey, followed by an Etherium Blue drybrush and several layers of Badab Black to dull it down. It's quite a nice look, I think and makes him look really tough.

Another thing to note is that unlike most Space Wolves that you see, he's wearing a helmet. This is going to be another major feature of my army - only the Rune Priests and particularly reckless members of the Rout are going to go without them, after all only a fool removes his helmet in the heat of battle and the Sons of Russ are no fools. Plus i think armies look so much more menacing with very few bare heads.
