    Vallejo Game Color

Right, at the moment, I've been considering replacing my old GW paints with the Vallejo range. I've been looking at three offers from Wayland Games, and I'd like to hear some opinions about each one (I have enough points to negate the cost of delivery, and its a quicker delivery than other sites).

    72 Colors and 3 brushes at €191

All 95 Game Colors paints, 16 Opaque Colors and 8 Washes, at €265

All 95 Game Colors at €212

I know the 119 paint set would probably be the best place to start, but at the same time, €265 just seems to be that little bit too much, I can afford it, but its just that I've never been much of a painter so I'm not too sure what to think.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I'm a big fan of Vallejo paints, and i'd say if you are spending that much money, you might be best to mix paints from all of their ranges. I have paints from game colour, model colour and model air (I do have an airbrush but regularly brush on the black and metallic air colours).

The main problem with this is that you'd need to see the ranges in the flesh to get a good range of colours. I really do think the model colour and air are worth a look though, there are a lot of more natural colours available, and as i've said, the air paints are great - very thin already and good coverage.

I'd say it'd be pointless to buy the entire range, you'll end up with colours you wont need and colours you need lots of, so you'd be better of just buying them seperatly. IMO ofcourse.

I'd replace the GW paints you have with Vallejo equivalents once they run out. That's what I've been doing. If you aren't much of a painter I wouldn't spend 250 Euro on paints. The opaque paints are pretty good but not exact matches of the foundation range. The washes I can't comment on, but the Army painter washes are close equivalents to the old GW washes (badab, devlan, sepia).

Yup ^^^^ Pointless buying paint sets for the most part. I'd mix and match between GW and Vallejo (both Game and Model Colour ranges)

I think the better question is whether its the game color range you want, or the model color?

I don't think theres anything wrong with buying paint sets, but buying them straight off the bat gives you no room for error - what if you don't like the paint? what if you can't get used to it? I've now switched completely to vallejo after around two years of buying pots here and there. I've got about a 1/3 of the VMC, if that, and it covers everything I could ever need.

    Re: Vallejo Game Color

A few years back I switched over from GW to VGC and since then I've never looked back. With the exception of the citadel washes (not sure about the new ones, I haven't bought them) I use game color exclusively and was glad I bought the entire line at once. Yes there are a couple of paints I've never used but if you can get a good deal on the set I would recommend the investment.

I haven't tried model color or air color yet so I can't rate those, but I do hear great things about them. Model color being rather thick is the only thing I've heard about it, but that's easily fixed by just properly thinning your paints. When I get my airbrush next month I will try and pick up a few bottles of the air color as I hear you can nearly run in through your airbrush without having to thin it too much.

Absolutely, i've ran them straight from the bottle many times. I do tend to thin a little most of the time, and I use the vallejo thinner (water would probably do just about the same job though).

I'm not sure i'll bother with the new GW paints to be honest. I think in their efforts to simplify painting, they have just confused things. I don't like all the different categories of paint, and the drybrushing stuff seems gimmicky.

Regarding Vallejo washes, i'm not sure they are up to much from what i've seen and read. I'll be trying the army painter ones out soon as the strong tone looks a good replacement for devlan mud.

I've been worried about the new citadel washes and replacing my old GW ones with them. VGC washes are nowhere near the quality of the old GW ones. I didn't know P3 was putting out a new wash line. I've never used their paints but have always heard good things about them. If you can please post a review of their washes when you have a chance to use them I'm sure it would be very helpful to many of us.

Oh and I've heard that Vallejo thinner is really superior to water when using Vallejo's own paint line with your airbrush.

Yeah no probs, i'll gladly share any useful info on the washes (still annoyed GW cocked up by scrapping the old washes..). Regarding the Vallejo thinner, I spend a lot of money quite willingly on this hobby, so I don't see any point on skimping on thinner. I therefore bought a 200ml bottle of the Vallejo stuff and it's just fine for the job.
