An interesting idea for a Wood Elf theme... well, that's up to you!I

Having already ordered my first Wood Elves (a Glade Guard box set and a Highborn with Great Weapon) I can't stop thinkig of what theme my new army should have. I want to make my decision before I order some P3 paints (I've never tried those before). So, Things I consider right now are:

1)A simple Summer Wood Elves army. This will be painted useing colors equivalent to those the Eavy metal team uses in the Wood Elf army book (Greens and some browns). The P3 paimts I'll use in this case are slightly darker than the GW ones but I always prefered a darker look in my armies (though I use white primer). The pros of this theme are many. I can use the army book as an example to help me decide how I apply the paints, I get to make forest bases which can be awesome and easy, I have no problem fluff wise (Dryads, Treekin and Treemen won't be sleeping), my Tau army was painted just like Eavy Metal suggested and it was great and I don't have to experiment as much, which means less money to spend on models and paints.

2)A Winter themed army. With my favourite season being winter and the pure awesomeness of that ''winter is coming'' phrase from GoT I really consider this theme the best candidate. Although the fluff suggests that Trees sleep during Winter I see no harm in threatening some of them with fire so that they get their .... and march with the rest, less lazy, natives of Athel Loren. Seriously now, Trees are one of the main reasons I started Wood Elves and Winter will not be a reason not to field them. Also, with Eternal Guard being my favourite unit so far, the Winter theme comes in handy without mentioning how original the army will be. The cons are: No help from any source with my theme, I'll need to experiment on the colors and bases. More money spent on paints, models and basing material.

Right now, I believe that my decision is going to be made after I see your thoughts on this next idea I have in mind. So I'd like you to give your opinions on this colors for the wood elves:

For those of you not familliar with Warmachine, those models are from the privateer press range. Their faction is called the Retribution of Scyrah and they have rulebook similar to those of warhammer. If I end up useing the theme from them, then I have a book guiding me on how to paint armor, cloth and skin. That erases every con a winter theme will have. What concerns me now is that the theme seems a bit futuristic with that white armor etc... So, what are your ideas? Is that theme good for Woodies? or should I just stick to the GW theme? To help you, I believe that my painting skills are very good and so I can paint decent models useing the examples above.

I'd go for the winter theme seeing as that's the one you prefer, and i wouldn't worry too much about the trees, I've seen plenty of winter themed wood elves that still use forest spirits. As long as the bulk of your army is glade guards and not dual treeman and loads of dryads you should be fine.

I do like PP's retribution colour scheme but wood elves don't really have much armour so I wouldn't worry about the white, maybe swap that out for shades of grey, sort of similar to this:

My own woodies are done in the green spring/summer theme, although a bit darker than the GW ones, but a winter theme would be cool too, especially with snow bases. You should start a project log once you get some done, I was going to create one for my woodies yesterday but unfortunately my HTC is not compatible with my mac so I can't upload the images It would be good to see more wood elf love on the project forum.

I will definatelly start a project log but this will me in a month or two. The picture you saw me is indeed inspiring. I'll try to mach the colors with those of the P3 range and see what the results are. Are you going to start yours, maybe from a different PC when you find the chance? or useing a different camera? I'd really like to see wood elves projects too so If you could it would be great.

You can use trees in the Winter, just read the fluff on what Dryads, Treekin and Treemen actually are. All of them are spirits - in the case of Dryads they're wicked female spirits who can shape shift from a beautiful maiden into their war form, which appears as the models are designed. Treekin are dead trees which spirits inhabit and bring to life, while a Treeman is the same as a Treekin but with a larger tree and a more permanent state. So sure, you can have Treekin and Dryads running around in Winter, they'd probably look really good as models too, with snow resting on their branches.

Yeh, I just need a new camera first, unfortunately I don't think I could justify a new computer to the GF just so I can start a wood elf project log!

@wizzy - for the forest spirits, I wouldn't like to say 'You can't use them because it's winter' you should do whatever you want, but I'm pretty sure fluff-wise a lot of the forest spirits are dormant in winter, especially the older ones like treemen, which is when the elves have to hold up their side of the bargain.

Treemen are living trees.

It does however say that the forest (and Dryads, treekin etc) are much less active in winter
