    500 point space marine army

i'm new to space marines, just read the codex and did a little research and here's what i'm thinking for my first 500 point army:

    captain
10 man tactical squad (flamer, missile launcher, sergeant with chainsword)
    5 man assault squad
5 man scouts squad (sniper rifles)
    rhino or razor back
    Dreadnought if points allow

please offer any and all criticism as i'm new to space marines.

Sounds ok to me, a good base for you to expand on. The battleforce is similar to this, although you get an additional 5 marine bodies, and I doubt it includes sniper rifles for the scouts or the razorback parts for the rhino. On that point, never buy a rhino box, buy a razorback box instead - comes with all the same parts, plus a razorback sprue, for NO additional cost. Very bad pricing/boxing by GW. Make it up, leaving the top hatch loose, then you can swap round the razorback turret with the rhino hatch whenever you feel like.

I'd play what you have, probably combat-squading the tactical squad so sergeant and special weapon go in razor with chaplain, with assault squad to back them up, leaving missile launcher combat squad and snipers at the back to hold home objective with dread to support. Consider putting cammo cloaks and a missile launcher on the scout squad as well. Let's them take on armour, and in cover they become even more survivable than tacticals.

That's a good start for a 500 pt game. I did some quick math in my head and I don't think you will have enough room for the dreadnaught, You should be able to take a rhino, but probably not the razorback.
If I only had a nickel for every guardsmen that died...

Ya I wasn't sure I not have the new codex so I'm not sure what the new points would be

The Chaplain is a bit of a waste imo. Librarians tend to be more useful. Assault squads are equaly unimpressive, perhaps replace it with a Landspeeder ( this could also strenghten your currently weak anti tank capabilities )?

At 500 points the heaviest armor you're likely to face are Necron Arks and Barges (at least until they receive their first Penetrating hit), so heavy anti-Tank and such isn't a high priority.

2 things I'd put in for consideration:
Points Level: At 500 points, the full FOC usually isn't required, so you can usually get away with just 1 Troop, depending on how you and your group choose to play. It's an old school scenario designed to get you into the game and learning the ropes.

Expansion: You won't be staying at 500 points, plan your squads as they would be fielded at 1000, 1500, 1850, and beyond. That usually means putting Power weapons of one kind or another on the sergeants, plasma pistols, and possible meltabombs as available and when the model is lacking a Power Fist. Obviously, this isn't required, but something you should keep in mind as you build your force. Vehicles are easy to swap out parts on, but with Infantry models, that is far more difficult.
Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

I have plasma pistols meta bombs melba guns and all sorts of extras but I haven't played since I started , I started collecting them just for models but now I'd like to play so I'm striping my models and putting a small army to start when I started collecting them didn't have to battle force boxes
