    The Saturnine 16th

After a bit of discussion with BeatTheBeat about rather cool Saturnine 27th regiment, he quite nicely said I could do a sister regiment so...

    More to come...

    YESSSSSSSS!

Looking awesome, I have to say your sculpting is a lot smoother than mine. Really looking forward to more! Goes without saying that I'm subbed...

    Cheers,

    Re: The Saturnine 16th

I'm following BeatTheBeat's thread closely, and the idea of a combined sister thread's great. As BTB has mentioned, that's some lovely sculpting – and the use of Death Riders is de facto awesome!

Cool. Was tempted by them myself. But funds and current projects permit me not! Great start. Will be following both threads.

    Re: The Saturnine 16th

Thanks for all the comments guys!

BeatTheBeat - Clay shapers are your friend... I used a black flat chisel 0, a black taper point 0, and a grey angle chisel 0 (although I do prefer the grey as its nice and soft, so might get a few more).

DEATHCAT147 - Mine will be the much slower of the two for awhile yet. Aside from my Malifaux and a fantasy warbands thing I'm doing, I've also got some commission work to finish, a job that has me working 12 hour days, and a secret project chewing up a lot of time.

    Apologist - Thanks bud!

Hadriel Caine - Crunching the numbers can put people off a project, but in this case I already had the death riders, and as I'll be using the project to practice sculpting a lot more (I'm planning to make my own heads and use them on gorgon crew) its not as painful as most armies.

Galvatron1701 & Brother Ludovic - Its a decapitated Underworld figure from Hasslefree.

Petay1985 - Thanks for the kind words fella

A slight update, as I feel I've been a bit of a lazy squig whilst BTB has raced ahead.

I've increased the size of the collar around the back to give her a bit more bulk, and you can just about see the side sheild (I can't decide whether she should be a captain or not, so I wanted to have somewhere to display her circle status if thats what I decided on). I also spent a day last week trying to make some back banners out of brass but that went incredibly badly, so I have some in the post instead

Any ideas for further decoration welcome!

Mate, that looks SWEET! I honestly don't know what more you could add without going overboard, but if you think of something I'm sure it will be good. Now.. Paint, we demand paint!

Looks really great with Selene's head. Lovely sculpting. I'm so tempted by this lol. Maybe a squad as a painting project. Caught myself looking at the rough riders on the FW website this morning. Only 8 more terminators and a dread to go then who knows...

This is so cool! I love BTB's stuff and it's great to see the insanity genius of hacking up FW models has spread inspired.
That the two regiments are "related" gives it an extra frisson of awesome.

Beyond that initial gush, she looks great, you wouldn't believe that a male-to-female head swap would work so well, but it fits perfectly.

    Bravo.

    Re: The Saturnine 16th

Thanks for the comments guys. Painting will start soonish (once I've decided on a scheme that is) because I think shes finished...

Not entirely sure on the chainmail but I'll leave it a day or two to see how I feel. I'm quite happy with the shoulder numbers though. The back banner ended up being a lot bigger then I though it would be - what do people think?

I've also started to sculpt something from scratch after catching the chainmail bug. The first of my machine cult.

The chainmails rough in places but thats going to be covered by armour plates/robes. Hes going to have human mask type head. One arms going to be robotic whilst the others going to be mechandrites. He's also going to have a few attendants so I could potentially field him as an inquisitor.

Comments and crits appreciated as always

    Re: The Saturnine 16th

Ooooooh, Mechanicus! Me like! As for the backbanner however I feel that it completely overpowers the rest of the model, taking away from the subtlety of the details you've already added. A little like adding ketchup to an expensive meat dish; It might taste good in the end but just when you put it on it feels a bit weird.

No big reason not to go with it, but IMO the model looked better before. Will turn out great either way though, I'm sure!

Really like the chainmail though. Fits the theme mucho well!

Oh, and as you've probably noticed I switched the Circle armour colour from bronze to white. And I don't have any heraldic shield to go with my captain either. Go with whatever version of the fluff you like

    Cheers,
    BTB

I must agree, it unbalances the model. Less is more Other than that i think its top notch sir

Woohoo! Always awesome to see stuff from the Sol system! You and BTB need to coordinate this project closely, this could be very cool! So what have you got planned?

    Re: The Saturnine 16th

BeatTheBeat - I get your point with the banner, and I think your right, but... hmm. My gut feeling is telling me that there should be something on the back of the rider to give them a bit of a bigger presence. Also, at the moment its removeable so theres nothing to stop me just leaving it off if I decide against it.
As for the armour color, I'll probably stick with bronze for her as I have some lovely vallejo liquid gold thats going to make her shine

DeathCat147 - Thank you very much

Malika - We are trying to coordinate pretty closely; this being BTB's idea I made it clear from the outset I wasn't going to trample on his toes and that he was quite right to call the shots. I'm merely riding his coat tails after all
Army wise its going to be simple and compact. Beyond the infantry platoons I would like...

    10 rough riders, plus commissar.
1 squad of mortars (there my favorite weapon)
1 squad of engineers with mole mortar.
1 Grenadier squad, although these will be converted with breastplates from a normal kreig squad.
    Machine cult, scratch built

Vehicle wise I'm completely stuck. There won't be many (3 max) so I want to make them special. Heres the list of potentials so far.
    - Bombards, because I've always wanted one.
    - Tauros assault vehicles (to act as spotters for heavy artillary)
    - Some of Ratgards basilisks (although there a bit pricy).
    - Minotaur (although I've heard its a pig to build)
    - Valdor/Infernus

Although those last two would be dependant on me finishing my long suffering shadowsword...

I think it's the height that's throwing the aesthetic off. If I recall correctly, there's a smilar but shorter feathered backpiece on the Ravenwing upgrade sprue. Perhaps that might be a nice compromise?

Sounds fantastic – between the mortars, Rough Riders and machine cult, this is going to be a classic 40k army. Keep it up!

    Re: The Saturnine 16th

Hmm, if I understood BTB correctly the vehicles used by the Saturnine kind of have this early Imperial (or maybe even pre-Imperial) feel. The Tauros would be awesome to add. What about some vehicles that are normally meant for the Space Marines such as a Land Raider variant (convert it from a Proteus pattern).

As for the Rough Riders, will the commissar just be a normal commissar or some sort of Saturnine officer that counts as a commissar?
