Lightbulb The Fickle Tides of Battle: Dwarfs vs WoC (2500)

The Warriors of Chaos had been defeated, the hill had been won, their ancestors would be safe, and Ulfic Thunderrune was now tasked with making sure it stayed this way.

Three kilometers from Karak Hirn was a burial tomb, a place where they could lay the bodies of their ancestors and they would be guarded by powerful runes from being desecrated. So being careful not to damage the stone coffins, they were extracted from the ground, loaded on the carts of the work horses, and the throng started the march.

The following day, it was the smell of fire that first alerted Ulfic to the danger. Using his spy glass the rune lord searched the horizon and spotted a second Warriors of Chaos army laying siege to the tomb. At their head was a powerful sorcerer wielding the winds of magic against the power of the runes. For now the runes were holding, but for how long?

Leaving the stone coffins behind Ulfic sounded the advance and it wasn't long before the runed cannon balls were crashing into enemy lines...

So after some bad news I was looking to vent some steam and posted up that I wanted a game. Soon after the guy that won best general at the last tournament said he would be up for a 2500 point game and so it was set.

    Total: 2498

    His list: (ish)

Wow amazing game, I thought you had it in the bag at the start. I don't think I've seen a competitive list before without the rune of forging, could you please explain the thought process behind this?

Good game though, could've easily swung back in your favour if he hadn't been so lucky with his Knights armour saves.
I am currently a Dwarf only player.

My thought is that dwarf players put too much faith into the rune of forging. Being able to reroll a misfire is nice but then again you are increasing the cost of the cannon by 39% to try and cover something that might happen.

Even if it saves you from a misfire you still have to hope the reroll isn't a misfire, that you actually stick the shot, that you make the 2+ to wound, that you roll enough wounds to kill the target, and that it was worth the investment (125 points to kill 35 point troll woohoo!). Even if you were stuck with the misfire odds are that the only thing that will happen is you'll not shoot that turn and maybe the next.

In the end I would rather use the points on something I know will be effective, or at least have a better chance. Maybe it's the orc player in me, but I'm willing to accept more risk if it makes me more powerful overall.

Generally I agree. Once in a while you would miss having it, but I think spending points on something more concrete is the way to go. Out of ~10 or so games with my Dwarfs, the only one I lost was a complete thrashing by Skaven. Cannon runes had nothing to do with a terrible matchup and 1-2 critical dice rolls, like rolling 1" pursuit of a fleeing Doomwheel when trying to pursue out of the charge arc of a Plague Furnace horde...

Nicely painted armies. Specialy like the WoC theme.

    Really?

Had I known that I wouldn't had bothered with him. Did you actually put him on the flank to bait my miners away from the main battle?

Yea. He was basically useless in that matchup so I just kept him on the extreme right to cause some trouble. I only rolled 2 spells for him too, sorry if it wasn't more clearer...

No, you did everything you were suppose to. Next time I'll do my part and pay more attention

I think that's a great use for the sorcerer on a disc against dwarves. Stupid stunties and their dispel dice /grumble.

Nice game though, thanks for the report sir!
