    Space Marine Chapter Ideas

    Hey guys,

I'm really excited at the idea of creating my own Chapter of Space Marines and was wondering if anyone would like to share how their own experiences of creating a Chapter?? Things like the name of the chapter, the theme, the story behind it + any pics you'd like to post would be fantastic! I'm already formulating ideas of my own but thought it'd be cool if anyone wanted to share their own experiences (good or bad) as I'm just getting into 40k again. I look forward to hearing + seeing your stories!

    Re: Space Marine Chapter Ideas

Wow. I could go on for days about making up fluff and stuff.

Whilst not my own chapter, I did help out a friend when he was making a Blood Angel successor chapter, the Scars of Sanguinius, by writing up a narrative campaign. I wondered if my friend, who really enjoys playing in the spirit of the army he plays as, would choose to pursue a sacred relic. Even if this relic was first claimed by an organisation such as the Inquisition or the Adeptus Mechanicus. Naturally, he didn't back down when his objective was in the hands of another Imperial organisation. His force attacked the Mechanicus and critically damaged their ship in a boarding action. The relic was nowhere to be found. One of the Magi had removed the relic and escaped during the battle.

For his failure, my friend's captain (the name escapes me) had to face judgement from his chapter master. Not only did he lose the relic, but he had fought other agents of the Emperor. Normally not too big a deal, but the Mechanicus already had the backing of a triumvirate of Inquisitors, along with their considerable political power. Basically the confrontation boiled down to ritual combat between the master and the captain, during which the captain had his arm taken off. Quite literally, I took clippers to the model. Anyway, it didn't matter too much since a new arm composed of gore and muscle burst from the stump, and with this new arm and the strength that it provided, the captain killed the chapter master.

I found it funny that he didn't mind that his captain had basically mutated right in front of him, and it only occured to him later that the entire thing was a way of getting him to use a Chaos army, with the Scars as the newly fallen chapter. It got to the point where a few other members of the chapter had mutated also, and some had gone through other changes, such as extensive bionics for one unlucky sergeant. The mutant captain was the new chapter master, he started using some of his original sergeants as captains, and one sergeant found his calling as a chaplain.

It all came to a head when I introduced the idea of the Scars cleansing a daemon world of its taint and claiming it for their own. The daemon prince ruling the world didn't oppose them. Indeed, it welcomed them. With the Scars' remaining command group (essentially his master and original squad leaders) gathered, the daemon offered them a gift in return for eternal service. The relic. The penny dropped and my friend saw that I had manipulated his choice of actions. I think Tzeentch would have been proud. So I gave him another choice, does he choose to take the relic and do a Chaos army or does he choose to do more of a renegade army? He chose to fight the daemon and claim the relic. Needless to say, he won that game and took the relic as his prize. After that, he kept his mutated chapter master, other mutants within the chapter were either killed (he swapped limbs and heads for more loyalist looking helmets) or had their mutated extremities hidden (things like robes draped over "arms").

To sum up my post, it might be an idea to simply play a few games with your marines, figure out a laystyle that you're happy with, and expand from there. If the army's fluff is tied in to its gaming history, you will find that growth occurs more naturally than if you simply write reams of stuff and arbitrarily try and stick to it.

    With regards,
    Dan.

Well, mine was easy, but kinda lame.

Mine's a Post-Heresy Dark Angels unit that got lost before the Deathwing changed colors, which allows me to have non-Bone White Terminators. (Mine are DA Green and Black) The army exists 'cause I like DA but don't like white Termis, hence the (convenient) plot device of "The Warp did it."

My chapter is called the Omega Wardens, a product of Raven Guard and Dark Angel geneseed that focuses of covert operations, shock assault, and assassination. They have a fatalistic theme built around a belief that the Emperor's enemies are colluding to engineer an apocalypse for humanity. They obsessively hunt for signs of this apocalypse and see themselves as the first and likely last line of defense against such an event.

As for creating your own Chapter, I suggest that you pick a central theme that you really enjoy about Space Marines and focus on that as your primary theme. For me, it was the special forces feel of Astartes. If there is an aspect or blend of aspects of Space Marines that you really like, work on that and add flavor.

The Great White North is the home of the Emperor's Hosers. Unlike most Chapters, the Emperor's Hosers often have plenty of down time between wars due to the remote location of their home world to the rest of the Imperium. The Chapter's homeworld is located far to the galactic north and often cut off from the rest of the Imperium for centuries at a time due to fierce warp storms. During this down time, the Chapter often engages in the ancient Terran sport of hockey. Those Marines not participating in the games often watch from bars and the many coffee shops the locals call Timmy's. When the storms reside and contact is reestablished, the Hosers descend in force upon the enemies of the Imperium, favoring winter planets, brewery worlds, and any theater with a ready supply of back bacon.

Due to their extreme isolation, the Chapter often returns to the Imperium in excess of fifteen companies at a time, but with severe limits on equipment, most notably the complete lack of access to the Rhino chassis and Terminator armor. As such their methods of war are unorthodox to say the least. They do field numerous Land Raiders as this is the only vehicle pattern they have access to and always seek to adopt any new variants they encounter. They also maintain a unique variant, the Land Raider Zamboni, named in honor of their homeworld's primary forge. Forgoing transport capacity and the standard armament, the Zamboni has been fitted with heavier armor and a magma cannon as its sole armament. It has been noted by historians and, most notably Bjorn the Fell-Handed, that they operate in formations and with tactics common to the Great Crusade. These micro-crusades of the Hosers see great gains in the short term as they smash into any enemy they can find, often winning back entire systems for the Imperium. However, they suffer one great flaw; after several decades the warp cuts off contact and supplies from the Great White North. These micro-crusades do not stop or slow and often end in a terrible toll upon their targets as the Hoser fight to the last. While this has almost always allowed for the successful completion of their campaign, a more conservative approach may be of greater long run benefit to the Imperium.

The Chapter's history is shrouded in mystery, however, records of their Chapter extend back as early as M34. They acknowledge no Primarch as their founder and tests upon samples of their gene-seed have thus far failed to match any of the 18 known Legions or haven been proven to be a mutation thereof. It is not conclusive, but two theories have arise as to their origins. The first is that the corruption to their gene-seed is so great that recognition of the source is now impossible, which is most likely and under investigation by the holy Ordos Hereticus. The second theory is that the Chapter has gained gene-seed from numerous sources and over the millennia has mixed the gene-seed so as to be unidentifiable. Either is heresy of the highest order and only their fanatical, if short lived, operations have spared them from Exterminatus.

I had a chapter who refused to use their name, nearly destroyed by traitors they were in the re-building process. Lots of Dreads and apocatheries in each squad. Was a really fun army to use, then the chapter traits were no more and I sold the army

One thing I'd suggest about building your own chapter-

Pick your symbol from the transfer sheet. You don't have to be a successor chapter (necessarily), and you can always very carefully paint over it if it doesn't match your colors. Down the road though, you may really wish you could invest in some cool accessories like ForgeWorld doors for your vehicles or whatever, and at that point, you'll be happy you picked an existing chapter symbol.

I didn't, and now 3,500 points of Marine stuff later, I really do wish I had.

At some point, probably in 20 years after my kids are grown and out of the house, I'd like to go back and re-paint my existing marine stuff. I've already thought of the super-cool color scheme, and they'll still be my own little creation, but I'm definitely going to use an existing chapter symbol so I can get some of the fancy do-dads and special characters and not have to do such extensive modification or settle for the generic Imperial Aquila on my doors and shoulder pads.

I agree with using something from a transfer sheet. So handy!

My scarlet dragons chapter are an imperial fists successor. They are recruited from the feudal world of kamekura and has a definite eastern theme. I use the salamanders badge. Red marines with white helmet, shoulder pad rims and belt. 1st company all wear black with the same white markings.

My advice is to keep things simple especially to start with. You don't need 100 page back story. Just a good theme or idea behind it.

My <redacted> army is more of a sect of an existing chapter rather than a chapter unto itself. I've named them "Ashes of the Phoenix", they wear black armor with phoenix symbology. Their story is that they are self-exiles due to personal failings, who serve as unrecorded protectors of <redacted> as he wanders the warp, hoping to aid in his return. Helps me stomach <redacted> story to think that he has a small army of paladins with him as he kicks over brass spires and stomps on nurgle flowers. And that it's essentially their blood being spilt that is keeping him from death and corruption.

For a name, just use the Chapter Name generator. On scraps of paper write "Dragons, Knights, Crusaders, Angels, Blood, Dark, Black, Iron, Sons of, Warriors, Hawks, Falcons, Eagles, Hammer, Red, White, Emperor's, Fists, Raven, Doom, Claws, Talons, Marines, Imperial, Fury, Fire, Flame, Crimson, Slayers, Hunters, Griffons, Skulls, Swords and "Draw again and translate to Latin". Draw two out of a hat, and success.
