Re: Your thoughts on the SM Stormtalon

Stone Rhinos re-design does it improve it massively. Well done. However, it doesn't get away from the question of why it exists in the first place, as opposed to:

A souped up, scaled up land speeder- although I'm struggling to think of a weather name not already in use.

An imperial navy fighter- it would be easy enough to tweak the background to allow the marines to have acquired a few of them.

Both of which would allow them to do new plastic kits and sell more, whilst looking better and fitting the background much more.
Occasionally accused of being helpful and constructive.
One ring Book to rule them all, one ring place to find them, One ring Codex to bring them all, and in the Darkness future bind them. Time for the unified Marine Codex.

No need, the Land Speeder Tempest exists and is pretty much this thing. It'd only need a second AC barrel and it matches the rules for the storm talon quite aptly.
    Awesome. Awesome to the head.

Perhaps a couple of forgeworld aircraft punisher cannons are the answer?

Has Jes left GW? I can't believe this joke would have got past him.

I voted "cool (like it)" But I looked at the picture in GW's newsletter and from that angle, it looks a little long and the tail is too stumpy. I don't like it that much anymore.

Just another thought but surely if a Marine chapter is involved in a theatre of war that required aerial support then the Imperial Navy would most likely be involved already? Also why would you put Marines, the most valuable soldiers in the Imperium in flying tin boxes like the Stormtalon, at least the Thunderhawks are well armed and armoured enough to get marines into a hot zone to deploy and provide addidional fire support.

"Welcome to the new cavalry. We will ride into battle, and this will be our horse. " Que ride of the valkyries. Cause I guess we're in vietnam.

Jokes aside when did the orbital assault and ship to ship boarding marines of the Adeptus Astartes join the air force? I thought they were Space MARINES?

I like the thunderhawk it performs a vital function, it can be used to air drop soldiers and tanks. Gunships is an imperial guard thing leave it to them. But hey people are free to like it i just wont be gettign one (well i dont play Space Marines so ofcourse i wont be getting one)... that said wont this bog 40k down with even more rules? Planetstike, Cities of death, apocalypse, spearhead (or whatever the name was) and now air battles? There is no way all theese models supported by the new edition.

Oh and yes how is these new flying thingies diffrent from landspeeders?

While I can see the improvement for the lascannon/assault-cannon combo I don't think the weapon housings on the sides are that bad, and they particularly suit the missile options.

For example, it looks great like either of these:

Make the Assault Cannon the weapon to swap from heavy bolters or swap for lascannons, and give you the two missile types, and it'd look good that way, pods might still be a little far out, but it looks much better than now. I'm half tempted to get one and build it that way, but at £27.50 for a two-sprue model that requires a bit of work to look good, compared to the awesome 3-sprue ork kit which is bigger and better, it's a hard one to pick.

Re: Your thoughts on the SM Stormtalon

I agree that it does even look alright with the missile pods on the side, if the cannons are fixed... it's just that with all three, or bolters/ lascannons on the side, it just looks like altogether too much stuff tacked on. The basic body shape is fine, though again I am holding out to judge it completely until I see one in person. Not expecting my opinion to change though. The Stormraven, as much as people will comment on it's lack of aerodynamics, is essentially half SM tank with wings, half baby Thunderhawk, and hence fits in with the existing range in that way. This somewhat has the same feel in the main body, but it gets lost under so much stuff surrounding it you wonder if an ork mek has been busy making "improvements". Anything that reduce the clutter in any way seems to improvement in immensely, and already in this thread we have 3 or so ways of doing that.
Though my guards may sleep and ships may lie at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

I was disappointed by the sketches of it at first, but started to like it once I saw the pic. Then when I noticed the thrusters pointing downward on the bottom, it made me love it. You can get a good view of them on the 360 degree pics on the GW website. It made me picture it's motion as hovering like a VTOL Jet, which is incorporated into the rules of being able to hover for a BS bonus. Then I was even more turned on by the function of it being able to attach to units in reserves, particularly those outflanking units. It makes outflanking even more viable by removing the deterrent of having ended up on the wrong side of the board, thanks to it's 70" missiles. The only thing I am still wondering about is the scale of it. I havent found many good pics which have other units to scale it by, I am also too unfamiliar with those flying bases to scale it off the stem. I plan to save my pennies and get this on advance order before it comes out.

The Codex Astartes specifically dictates the methodology of war for Astartes and only Astartes.
Actually, they are confined by those limitations, it's why they no longer field super-heavy vehicles, why they're never allowed direct command over Imperial Guard or Imperial Navy forces, and it's why the Nova-class Frigate is considered a controversial design by the AdMech and the High Lords; its armament is designed exclusively for offensive void actions, primarily against capital ships, which is the reserved responsibility of the Imperial Navy.

The Imperial Navy fight in space and in the air, the Imperial Guard fight on the ground, and the Space Marines engage in surgical strikes against specific targets. The main conceit behind Abnett's Double Eagle was that the Phantine were a unique oddity, literally the only known non-Navy atmospheric fighter formations in existence. Even the Valkyries assigned to Guard regiments have Navy pilots. That division of powers was created precisely so that no one individual, and especially not the Space Marines, could ever prosecute every kind of war, could never command all the necessary forces to cause a civil war. Hell, the Imperium launched a massive Crusade into the Badab sector because Huron dared to take direct control of a few measly PDF forces.

Giving the Marines a dedicated atmospheric fighter craft capable of both aerial interception AND ground attack clearly breaches that limitation. And it looks like a flying potato

It looks like a big toy. I am very dissapoint. Hope they will do a better job with the rumored Chaos Dragon. The Necron flyer is very.nice though, very Cylon-like.

I don't mind the aesthetic. But the proportions are a bit off. It looks like it should either be larger or have less guns sticking out of the front.

Space marines are a self sufficent organization with reguards to completing their given task. Meaning that if they are given the order to attack a target they can do it without the support of any other IoM oganization. And this is needed to enable them act without the long drawn out process that limits the other military branches. Which would require them to bring their own air support and cover.

The Storm Talon is not an air superiority fighter. It provides close ground support and might be able to engage some airial targets. But that does not make it a dogfighter. If you compair it to a Land Speeder Tempest. The Tempest has the look a high speed aircraft whereas the Talon does not. The Talon however looks like it would be able to greatly out manoeuver the Tempest in tight spaces. Like say providing close air support in a city or dense terrain.

Or to make it a real world comparisaon: (using USMC counter parts)
Land Speeder tempest = AV-8b Harrier
Storm Talon = AH-1 Super Cobra
    Simular function but different application.

This thing really is quite an eyesore. I pre-ordered one reluctantly, but only since fliers will probably be common in the new edition.

I wish they had designed it to look more like the Terran Banshee from Starcraft 2. That is a nice sleek looking gunship, and I think something similar could have worked fine for space marines. The orks have a good flier, and if I collected orks, I would have had no hesitation in pre-ordering one of them.

That's why when they makes a unit plastic and charge the same as when it was metal I don't care. To me the model just got better for the same cost, who cares about anything else.

I like it. I really do. I may make changes to it (just like I did with my storm raven) when I get it in my hands. I intend to buy a couple to escort my raven.

I know it is C:SM but my group has already decided to ignore that. In our group, if you are loyalist marine you can have one or more.

The rules are not ridiculous and it seems silly to stop other Marines from having it.

I was only five assault marines away from completing my company strength task force......was...

It'd look so much better if they found someplace else to mount those assault cannons.
