Wait and see. The only sensible thing to do.

ermm...how can anyone gear up for anything yet....as the rules could change massive amounts or very little!!
....but you don't need a new edition to paint models either....
No, but it's a good incentive to start.
It so happens that I am running a great campaign which draws to it's close next week. My beloved Wolves, my only army, have done so poorly in this campaign it's startling. I plan to make a last ditch suicide mission into the heart of the most dangerous territory as my last battle. When I lose (and trust me, I will...my dice have been Fenris-cold this month), we do a write-up and I plan to write up my Wolves' final epithet.
I play a sect of the Wolves called the Lost Company, essentually a wing of a Great Company who became lost on the other side of the galaxy due to a warp storm. With all of their psykers killed they haven't been able to navigate home for decades, and have instead roved through local space fighting the enemies of the Imperium.
Fighting in the heart of this hornet's nest unsupported has taken it's toll, and the stories of the campaign results depict what has actually happened: my force has been merc'ed at every step, my chances in the battle looking more and more hopeless. However, I still control one vital territory...the astronomic array. My army can use this array to leave the campaign location and finally go home. The big conflict in my story is, why stay and fight this losing battle when they could just leave? The Lord of the company refuses to abandon the others who need their help.
My plan is, if I win my last game, we will heroically destroy our enemies and then jump back to Fenris. If I lose, I will do a write-up depicting my Wolves defiantly refusing to leave at the last moment and instead descending to some final apocalyptic battle in which their fate is left to uncertainty.
The next week, 6th comes out...just in time for me to start my new in-progress Necron army (which is a coincidence since the Necrons are who my Wolves have been getting trounced by in the campaign).

Big Blog of Everything (currently getting ready for Scale Model Addict's Big Spring Contest).
Well considering I just finished playing a game that summed up everything I hate about 5th edition - same unit spammed over the whole army, cheap melta spam, constant wound allocation abusing, and ending in a loss thanks to 2 lone guys walking up to objectives I held for the whole game...
Yeah I think I'm done playing 5th ed games - I'll just wait patiently for 6th ed. Maybe I'll actually get a couple months of good games in before people figure out the new best unit to spam.Sorry still burning off a little bitterness. I am actually looking forward to the new rules - give the game a shake-up.
I got 2 DakkaJets to get in in the early "flyers are OP" action.
I am also beefing the paint on my chaos space marines. I am looking forward to getting them off the shelf and onto the table.
My Nid army is in a carry case under my bed being used only for fun games where I expect to lose. The space marine army will be used socially. Going to look into what competitive army I might build after the release of 6th edition.
Tweaking my Tau... makes a nice change from BA, and since they're pretty much at the bottom of the 40k army heap playing tiddlywinks with Tyranids, the only way is up...
