    10-12mm historicals/romans? Where?

    Hi all,

Over the summer I'm hoping to use the kings of war rules for mantic to make some fun historical games.

I really want to do a roman army, and then a mongol/greek/barbarian/orc/whatever really army to oppose them.

So, historical gamers of warseer... Who makes nice historical models in 10-12mm scale? Specifically romans, preferably plastic, but anything will do

    Thanks in advance,
    Jack
    Browncoat. And will be forever.

Not being funny, I bloody love Mantic Games

Old Glory do 10mm Mid-Republican Romans.

Steve Barber does 10mm Caesarian Romans.

Pendraken and Magister Militum both do Republican, Imperial and Late Romans in 10mm.

All those are in metal, not aware of a company that does them in plastic.

At the moment, 10 mm historical plastics tend to be rather scarce - though there are some 1/144 scale vehicles available for the 20th century.
Who is Griefbringer? Read his poem.

Nobody does them in plastic in 10mm. There are plastic 20mm (1/72 scale toy soldiers) and plastic 28mm (Early Imperial Roman, go to the Warlord games website).

For metal 10mm Magister Militum are the nicest (and the best if money is no object) but Pendraken give you the best 'bang per buck' in my opinion.

In 10mm scale you'd be best off doing stands of models instead of individually basing. Individually basing will get incredibly fiddly incredibly quick. If you base models on 40mm front and 20mm deep (and Renedra do plastic bases in this size easily available on ebay or in local games stores) then not only can you use them for Kings of War but Warmaster ancients, DBA and DBM as well. You're ticking more than one game system box by using the most common basing style. It means if you get bored of KoW you can easily try a different system without having to rebase. It also means if you want to sell your army then it isn't on some weird basing system that no one will want to buy.

I'd recommend doing a google search on 10mm roman and having a look at peoples blogs. There's some lovely stuff out there.

For opponents you can either go Celts/Britons/Gauls or Germans for a barbarian list, or Persians (who kicked the snot out of the Romans on multiple occasions when the Romans invaded them).

They only do Republican Romans, so the miniatures cover the period before the Marian reforms of the roman army, and aren't the 'classic' romans everyone thinks of when you see films like Gladiator or TV series like Rome.

However Numidian cavalry and Balearic slingers could be used in a Roman army, and they have Gauls which you could use for opposition.

You could easily use the TB minis for Marian romans if you like them. The Principes are wearing Montifortino helmets it looks like, and lorica hamata. Get the guys with the large shields and you're done. Heck, if you wanted to do a "late" Polybian army, use Principes for both Hastati and Principes, as some evidence suggests by this time Legionaries were mostly equiped the same anyway...
