    1750pt wolves list for consideration

    40K Army: Space Marines
hi all, just throwing my competitive non fluffy army in the ring for discussion

rune priest w chooser, living lightning

    3x riflemen dreads

5 grey hunters w flamer in rhino (priest goes here for top hatch LL fun)
4x5 grey hunters w flamer and lasplas razors

    3x1 multi/flamer speeders

    3x 3 longfangs w 2 missile launchers in bolterbacks w hunter killers

the only thing i'm unsure about is the HS... whenever i play wolves, the opposing longfangs are high on the target priority list, in theory taking a smaller unit means they don't draw as much attention, can be concealed in smaller amounts of cover, and the points i save on the extra 2 ml fangs net me another vehicle hull which can be used to block/sacrifice/mobile cover. the hkm's add to my long range shooting and make the bolterbacks slightly more of a threat vs transports or light vehicles.

the effect i'm aiming for is to make target priority more difficult for my opponent with my threat level evenly spread across multiple units rather than concentrated in a handful of places. if you were facing this what would you target first and what would you ignore?

riflemen work for gk because at str 8 they can kill characters... pointless to lose the attack, so stick with the free assault cannon or spring for the plasma cannon..

have you seen what riflemen do to av 10/11? i get an effective range of 54" with 4 twin linked shots on a mobile platform... and it takes two weapon destroyed results to render it useless. with the asscann its 4 str 6 shots which rely on rends to take down mech or a plasma cannon which scatters, and i have plenty of plasma already. im good with the riflemen thanks.

those 3 rifleman dreads are 30pts more expensive than 3 6man LF with 5 ml, take the bolterbacks as well gives you 75pts you can play with else where from the 9 lf you get rid of.. and not giving up the firepower you lose from the lack of dreads

i rewrote your list adding in another lasplas, more lf's and 3 LS Typhoon/Multi that is by far more effective than the 3 riflemans you lost, and one of any of the sargenats can have a meltabhomb.. i'd suggest on runepriest squad. and 3 meltas on the lf's too.. because not all the time will you be split firing

why would you put your long fangs in razorbacks, i can understand having one, but not being in it, there are no firepoints

@ bildo: the razors are there to operate separately to the fangs. I'm just toying with the idea of instead of having one bigger threat (ie full fang squad) i get a smaller fang squad and an extra vehicle hull that i can happily sacrifice or use as cover to the more important lasplas. I've seen the advantages of the rhino with firepoints for smaller squads but the rhino itself, whilst it does provide protection for the fangs, doesn't present any sort of threat level to the opponent. With the bolterback it has at least some offensive use, provides a modicum of ranged anti infantry and like the speeders, i can block and sacrifice without being too bothered if they die.

@ clarkson: the riflemen really are fine. i could swap them out for more missiles or lasplas, but it would leave my list with too much similar firepower. as it stands i have a good mix of melta, plasma, missiles and autocannon. more longfangs is not the be all and end all of wolf lists. great unit, but its still a unit of t4 3+ marines with no ablative wounds in a mech list. the riflemen are also mobile, which is a massive advantage if you play with the right amount of terrain on the table. what do you do if the table layout doesnt gift you with enough cover or decent lanes of fire for your 18 longfangs? you move them and loose a turn of shooting...
