SM Storm Eagle - tactical uses/viability/is it worth it?

    Hello

With the 6th ed looming and all the rumours and upcoming releases leaning heavily towards fliers I was wondering would the storm eagle be a useful addition to my army?

What's the tactical uses for this flier?

What's the best weapon load out?

And is it worth the points?

If so I'm thinking of buying a storm raven before gw up the prices and uses chapter house studios upgrade kit

    Cheers

    Dai

Chaos, load with no/minimal upgrade termies. For Imps it's nearly redundant- HG in Apoc, that kind of thing. It might work w/ CC Scouts w/Chappy for objective seizing

Purely for C:SM I was thinking maybe load up with 9 TH/SS termines & a character, arm it with a multi-melta & drop a world of hurt in the enemies lines?

For CSM, possibly, although probably not optimally.

For SM, honestly no, I don't think it has a role.

I may revise that opinion based on what 6th's Flyer rules look like, or not.

The best thing for this flyer, apart from basic flyer rules, would be 6th giving it the ability to transport two squads, so that C:SM can make use of the 20 man capacity. I know you can fit 10 terms in there but that's usually overkill, unless 6th gets rid of the need for magic 2 turn combats somehow.

Having a 5 man THSS and a 10 man tactical squad would be an interesting and pretty flexible combo IMO, though there may be a better use for such tricks.

I don't see that as being too likey though as the 1 squad per transport has always been the theme to keep things simple.

The main army that I think benefits from this flyer is Templars. They can use the transport capacity and keep the machine spirit, unlike chaos.

Black Templars possibly, although not for the best BT builds. It's true they are a very atypical MEQ force, and the initiates give 20 Capacity possibilities. Maybe in Raveenwing, but to be honest that's just a bad army right now.

SM and SW really have no need or use for it though, at least competitively. In casual play I'm sure there's lots you could do with it, although a StormRaven would see far more use (and we know the Raven really isn't all that great).

I agree with Enigma, without a 6th Ed change allowing the embarking of multiple squads, or more likely a StormEagle change allowing the same, it has too much transport, and not enough dakka/cheapness to be useful.
