The Tale of Historical Wargamers Season 1 – Signup

    What’s it all about then?

This is all about increasing awareness of historical wargaming and indulging in our inner history-geek.

Any period, any company, any scale... If it’s historical, then this is the right place.

This is the sign-up thread. During the month of June, everyone who’s interested can post here with questions, suggestions, praise, threats... Well, okay... I’d rather not have any threats, but apart from that everything goes.

Then, starting in July, we’ll all paint approximately 10% of our chosen army. Seeing as the tale will run for 12 months, this will allow each participant two Joker months. After all, life is unpredictable and any of us might suddenly need to take a break. If so, don’t sweat it – just call a joker and get back to the painting next month.

For those playing a skirmish-level game, there’s the option to do one or two “mini-tales”, each consisting of 6 months with 1 joker available.

Every month I’ll create a new thread where we can post pictures of the completed work from the previous month as well as WIP pictures for the current month.

A WORD ON PHOTOS – IMPORTANT!

    640x480 please! Or use thumbnails.
If you really, really want to show off a bigger picture, then put a link to it – it means those using slower connections aren't waiting for big pictures to load.

If you want to use bigger pictures then please host it on an external site like photobucket and link to it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Q : What army/scale/period should I choose?
A : That’s entirely up to you. As long as it’s a historical wargame then you’re welcome in this tale.

Q : How many points should I aim for?
A : Since we’ll be painting models from different games and scales, this is mostly up to you. You should, however, hopefully end up with a normal sized army for your chosen game.

Q : How much do I have to paint?
A : You should paint approximately 10% of your army each month. For skirmish-level games, you should paint approximately 1/5 or 1/10 of the warband each month, depending on whether you’re doing a “mini-tale” or a full tale, with a minimum of one model per month.

Don’t worry if it’s not up to Golden Daemon standard. Few of us can paint to that level so don’t let yourself get stuck trying to finish a single model. Well, if your monthly quota is a single model then, by all means, fell free to spend the full month painting just that. But for the rest of us, getting done on time is more important than delivering an award winning paintjob.

Q : Can I include historical background in my months post?
A : You not only can, you’re highly encouraged to do so. This is, after all, a tale of historical wargammers, so the historical background is important.

    Q : Can I drop out?
A : Well, we’ll be sorry to see you go. But real-life has a way of intruding at the worst possible moments, so if you absolutely and necessarily need to leave then do so. There are, after all, more important things in life than toy soldiers.

Q : What do I do if my question isn’t answered here?
A : You can either send me a PM or simply post it in this thread. I’ll update this FAQ as we get all the kinks worked out.

A question on percentages, if its 10% of the army we choose is that 10% of the grand total you expect to have, or of the amount currently owned?

    Sign me up!

I'll be doing the 28 (Maori) Bn for Flames of war, circa 2nd El Alamein. Not very many points yet, around 1k for the cuzzies.

I'll just paint a platoon a month though, I think it'll be easier for me that way.

    And me.

Still chewing over whether I should do some romans in 6mm from Baccus, or some Perry Samurai for skirmish gaming.

I vote Baccus, Gomez, if that matters.

Sign me up for a skirmish level US moderns... spot? Thing? This'll be my first tale, so I'm not sure on the terminology.

Oooh ouch, better be careful with some, otherwise you could easily find yourself painting 40 28mm models a month

    True.

It's probably best to plan ahead, figuring out what models you're going to need before starting the tale. You don't need to buy them all at once, of course, but knowing the approximate size of the army is kinda nice.

Mind you, this is also a question of the points value of each model. For example, one month I might paint a Tiger I, the next a nine stand infantry unit with a handful of halftrack transports. After all, it's 10% of the total points, not model count...

Well that's find with me, historicals and pts?...not on your life keep that stupid mechanic to silly games.

Shouldn't be too hard if I get the models, I can get 24 models done in 1-2 days, with shading, highlights, basing etc.

Sign me up for a third crusade era Christian army. I'll start with it pointed for Warhammer ancient battles but I'll write my own rules system as I go.

    ..and my axe!!

Never mind. Officially joining in the fun/possible year-long torment now anyway. Legio V Alaudae from around the year 69 AD (i.e. Early Imperial Romans).
Some archers, bit of cavalry and artillery and way too many legionaries. Although, as historical armies go (from what I've gathered) it won't be too big, but then again, I like the idea of actually being able to finish it...

I'm in for my ECW Royalists (Pike and Shotte rules).

I think my trying to paint 40 models a month will be unrealistic, so I'll do any of the following each month: 1 pike block (16 models), 2 musket sleeves (24), 1 storming party (14), cavalry unit(12), 1 or 2 Artillery pieces + crew(4). It wont quite amount to a whole army in a year, but I'll be less likely to drop out due to life slowing down my work rate.

Re: The Tale of Historical Wargamers Season 1 – Signup

You can always bulk up your pike blocks by adding some of the metal guys, or have one pike block of guys in armour and distribute the models from that box to bulk up the other blocks.

I want to sign up, but i have to finish unpacking first.

I still have my skaven units to finish up for the skirmish tale.
Molovian Guard (2,500 -ish Imperial Guard) (In all manner of shambles)
Wuzza's Whirlin' Wheelerz (In progress 2k SpeedFreeks)
The Horde of the Horned one (3k Skaven)

I'm in. I have around 1000 points to do of a (Flames of War) German Gepanzerte Panzergrenadierkompanie. Hopefully I can get my airbrush up and running and get the paints I need in time.

I'm in. I have Foy's Infantry Division of Reille's Corps as seen at Quatre Bras, and Pire's Light Cavalry Division of the same battle. Maybe next year I'll get around to painting some Anglo-Dutch?

Re: The Tale of Historical Wargamers Season 1 – Signup

As this the Official Sign-up Thread I better officially sign-up.

I will be painting a 28mm Andalusian army, based off the Taifa kingdoms list In the WAB El Cid book, set in the period between 1066 and 1085- the year Toledo fell to Alfonso VI of Leon-Castille. One of the reasons I chose this period is I wanted to make use of the Conquest Games Norman Knights plastic kits to make my Cavalry as well as their anticipated July release of plastic Infantry. I don't have a point total in mind, and as most of the models are going to require some conversion and some putty work I aim to get 10 models a month done, with cavalry models counting as two.

    Hey

I want to sign up. (It would be my third attempt for a tale, hopefully this time I will succeed.)

I don't really have a historical game system to model my army to. So I was thinking about painting 5 mini's a month. This will be either Perry's War of the Roses, a small retinue of a lord. (I am undecided if it will be a retinue of one of the lords that participated in WOTR, make a retinue of a French, German lord or make up a household). The month after it, it will be Victrix Greeks and than again WOTR. ....

So after 12 months I want a Lords retinue of around 30 models and 30 Victrix greeks.

If this okay for this tale, I would like to sign up.

Re: The Tale of Historical Wargamers Season 1 – Signup

Figure I might as well post the list I intend to paint, seems fitting in the signup thread.
    For use in Hail Caesar!

Marcus Hordeonius Flaccus, Governor of Germania Inferior (General)
10 Batavian Auxiliary Cavalry, including 3 command (decurio, vexiliarius, aeneator). 1 unit of 5 wide/2 deep, standard.
84 Legionaries of Legio V Alaudae, including 5 command (centurio, signifer, cornicen, optio, tesserarius). 4 units of 7 wide/3 deep, standard.
8 Syrian archers. 1 unit of 4 wide/2 deep, small.
8 Gallic archers. 1 unit of 4 wide/2 deep, small.
    2 Scorpio Ballistae (4 crew)

Adding all that up, counting cavalry as 2 infantry and making command worth 1 extra 'point', that gives me 140 points, so 14 infantry (or equivalents in cavalry etc) per month.
Sounds easily doable, yet result in quite a reasonable army I feel. Looking forward to starting!
