Since most gladiator games focus on 1 v. 1 or just a small handful of warriors per side and there aren't really standard army/warband/team sizes, I'll just aim to paint everything that I've got, which I believe is 22 that still need to be painted.
Sounds great. Each month we will get a pair of gladiators facing off against each other, we can place bets.

... end of the month we can vote on which one we like the most of the two ... to see who's won the pairing ... you can run a little competition to see who wins the crowd ... and their freedom.

Love the two guys you have already painted ... The 'barbarian' Thraex gets my vote. Love the owl.
Just a small suggestion ... where you have based them up so they don't end up on a little mound make a sausage of any kind of putty and run it around the base then use it to blend the step into the base. It is a pain ... but it is well worth it. You have to see it like cleaning off mould lines or green stuffing the join on plastic horse's necks. You can do it quite quickly as it does not matter if it is rough. You can see the effect on my cowboys (below) .... underneath the sand is a fat foundry base but you would never know it was there.

I think you are painting this lot just to make the rest of us look bad.

I may try and do some Normans at the same time as the Vikings so I end up with two SAGA forces.

Thanks for the tip on their bases, Harry. Several of them still need to be primed so I'll whip out the GS and have a go at them. I'll have to figure out how to fix those two up without damaging the paint jobs too badly (of course the feet wouldn't be too hard to touch up if need be).

The only other minis I've based on those flat round Renedra bases are my quar, and their integrated base flattens out much more so they fit on the flat base a little more seemlessly. Those Crusader minis (and Foundry, I gather) have a hefty chunk of pewter beneath their feet!
The great thing about the dwarves is that, even though there's this comic element, when they fight - they really fight!

I like Harry's idea for the Gladiators.

Believe me, every single time I did something to make others look bad my plots turned on me in horrible ways. Just wait until I start playing Jokers come month 2. Speaking of making others look bad though - you could enter the Tale of Historical Gamers with your Old West minis as well, adding yet another project to your list without really increasing the workload.

Should be good seeing some Normans added to the list. Have to agree with Codsticker there - should be a fun tale. All the essentials (Napoleonics, WW2, Ancients) are there plus a wide variety of other stuff.

Haha, just read Harry's voting idea on the gladiators - I like it! I'll try to paint a pair each month that would be logical or historically accurate opponents and let other participants cast votes for the winner.

Here are some (somewhat) hastily painted and photographed test mini's for my Germans:

I know, I probably shouldn't be going ahead and painting them (especially since I'm only painting 100 points a month), but it was just too tempting... Also, sorry about the image quality. It looked a lot better on the camera and then went all fuzzy when I uploaded it. You can still see their stands from that angle, but looking at it from above they're much less obvious. Still, I need to get some of that textured medium to build up their bases more.

I see nothing wrong with getting a head start, especially if you are going to be away from the 3rd to the 8th and won't be able to paint...

Re: The Tale of Historical Wargamers Season 1 – Signup

    Hi guys...

I've had an... Ummm... "Interesting" weekend...

Firstly, I got my first painting commission. Was describes as just a small squad of early war Germans (FoW, of course) for Hellfire and Back. It ended up being a quite large squad with half-tracks, full command with motorcycles, and three tanks. And I've just been told it must be done by Tuesday evening. Talk about being busy...

On a brighter note, I've also got myself a new job, starting tomorrow. Okay, so, for now, it's only a month or two, but one can hope, right? Problem is that I'll probably be working away from home for most of the time so just how much I'll be able to get painted...? I might have to cut back a bit but let's see about that.

Oh well... I better go get all those vehicles undercoated. I'll get the thread for the first month of the tale up later tonight once that's been done and I've gotten a quick dinner...

Wow, talk about short notice painting. Ccongrats on the new job anyway and ...well, I'm sure we'll grant the guy who initiates the ToHWG some leeway with the schedule.

Thanks. I hope it works out well. The pay is pretty bad and I'm not entirely sure what I'll be doing buy hey... Even if it's only for a few months, those are months I won't have to use my union support (which, sadly, is in rather short supply right now - I only have half a year or so left).

As for the painting, it's a pretty short notice, yes. I thought it should be done by Friday but...

Oh well, just gotta work a bit extra to get things done. The infantry is almost ready (minus helmets and a final wash) and the vehicles have all been undercoated and are ready for the final airbrushing tomorrow.

In any case, I better get to bed before I end up on the wrong side of midnight. Need to lay down and give my back some rest. I've been bend over the table, painting tiny figures almost non-stop for some five hours and I'm starting to feel the strain in my eyes and lower back.

But before heading off to get some shuteye, I've put up the first thread. Now, get painting Gentlemen!

Hey f2k, I'm going to have to pull out sorry. I'm a little burnt out painting wise at the moment, I've just come off doing three armies in the fantasy and 40k tales, and don't have the motivation to commit to painting. Sorry mate, and good luck to everyone!

THanks for putting up the first thread f2k!

edit: Hey, maybe we all could post in here once again if we're in or not, with what, how much a month we're planning to paint and so on.

I am still in. I will paint between 6-10 War of the Roses (Perry), the month after it I will paint 6-10 Greeks (Victrix), than again WotR and so on.
If this allowed ofcourse. I don't follow an armylist or rulebook.

I will post in the next couple of days a WIP of what I will paint in July.

I'm in, planning just 2 gladiators a month though since time and other painting projects will be keeping me from doing much more than that.

Or make that our first post in the new thread?

    But I am still in!

I plan to paint some stuff for SAGA

For my vikings I will be painting some of these .....

    http://www.solegends.com/citcat89aut...74068-2-03.htm

... and also so early citadel Normans

Each SAGA army has a Warlord and units made up of three different qualities of troops – household warriors (known as Hearthguard), standard warriors and levies (who are normally armed with missile weapons). The points system is simple – One point gets you 4 Hearthguard, 8 warriors or 12 levies.

So I will post my Warlord and a unit in Month 1 and then just add a 1 point unit (of 4, 8 or 12 minis) each month.

Sign me up as well. I plan to paint a Swedish and an Imperial army for the 30 years war in 15mm.

My initial plan is to paint either a Tercio, a Swedish brigade or a cavalry brigade a month. But I suppose we all know the old military saying about plans

For minis I plan to use a mix of Old Glory and QRF Freikorps.

Re: The Tale of Historical Wargamers Season 1 – Signup

    Welcome to the newcomers.

I probably ought to compile a list of participants for the new thread. Ahhh... So many things to do - so little time...

Also, I've been wondering... As with all other tales, I started by saying that 10% of the army should be painted each month. But judging from this thread, several of us - myself included - will struggle to hit that mark. Either because points are not used at all, or because it's simply not possible to divide the army nicely into 10 equal chunks. So perhaps this should be changed to stating simply that a minimum of one model/unit should be painted each month in such a way that the entire army will be completed within 10 months.

    Thoughts...?

Finally, it's probably about time I get going myself. I've finally completed the commission - although, to be honest, it's not the best I could do as I was a bit rushed here towards the end - so now I can get down to painting my own models...

Virgin Mary, I hope that your 15mm won't make me regret my choice of 10mm midway through the project. Did you have a look at Testudo's TYW minis? They're real pretty and are said to be the best by some.

I think that we should keep the 10% thing up. We get two Jokers, many of us are doing only smaller/skirmish scale stuff and even in the bigger armies you can always find something that costs a lot of points or makes up for a larger armount of the army's offensive power or something in months that are a bit problematic on the time side of things. We can reconsider once severe problems arise but I'm generally a fan of keeping with the rules of the tale. People can always drop out and I'm sure still are welcome to post pictures of how their projects proceed. I think of the Tales as a motivational tool to keep you at painting that one thing and not to get sidetracked and in my experience they work really, really well at that.

Nice job on the Germans. The guy can't really ask for more at such short notice. Still, they do look nice.

    Hey Guys

I understand that you are now into the first month but is it to late to join?
Some incentive to keep painting Napoleonics would be really handy.
