Talking The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 9 (May painting and June WIP)

(This is up early since I'm going to be on vacation.)

The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 9 (May painting and June WIP)

This is the thread where you post what you painted in May.

Please post nothing else for 1 week, and then after the first week of June please feel free to comment on the work of others.

    Mission Statement:

It is the goal of The Tale of Fantasy Painters, and all Tales for that matter, to help fellow gamers paint their armies by providing them a place to find support and encouragement.

    The Tale:

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months.

The way it works is that painting would begin in September and then in the first day or two of October a thread will be put up where you can post what you had done in September (this trend will continue for 12 months). You can include as much information as you wish, but some good things to include along with the picture are: the units, the total points for that month, conversions, highs and lows, plans for next month, and a number between 1 and 6. The number is important because it has to do with feedback.

A week after the initial thread is created you can then (and are encouraged to) add feedback on the work of others. Due to the large number of people who take part in these tales it is suggested that you only comment on those that have the same number as you. Of course if there are ones that really catch your eye, or you are a trooper and want to comment on them all, that is obviously awesome.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

    Men and Boys:

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two categories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q : When can I join in? Does it have to be at the start or can it be any time?
A : Join in any time.

    Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes, but if you can do this time after time then you can probably commit to more. Feel free to sign up multiple times to reflect the amount of work you plan to do (for example sign up for Beastmen X2 and submit 400 points a month, or Beastmen Men + Boy submit 300 points a month).

    Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example if you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : What do I do when I'm done and the tale isn't over?
A : First thing to do is to include an army shot (everyone loves an army shot) and then it's up to you. Either stay on and paint a model now and then to take part, or start planning for the next tale. If you are really cocky then you can sign up for ANOTHER army is see if you can blitz it in time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can I *insert something here that results in more painting*?
    A : A thousand times yes!!!

Q : Can Doi drop out?
    A : No he can't.

Q: Can other people drop out?
    A: It's up to Doi.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 9 (May painting and June WIP)

I started last month so I`ve had to work hard to keep up. Luckily I`ve had another good month as anyone that follows my plog probably knows. Very positive now that I will have the army finished for the tournament in september.

ARMY: Orcs & Goblins - Men category now!

    UNITS:
    - 6 River Trolls
    - 33 Big `Uns
    - 21 squigs & 7 herders
    - Snotling Pump Wagon
    - 28 Night Goblins
    - Night Goblin Shaman
    - Night Goblin Big Boss

    BUILDS/CONVERSIONS:
    - River Trolls
Mix of new trolls with a converted stone troll and a converted BB troll.
    - Big `Uns
Just a fun unit with some proper animosity going on.
    - Squig Herd
Literally everything I had of squigs to make the unit this large.
    - Snotling Pump Wagon
The spiky roller turned out great imo!
    - Night Goblins
Just a mix of generations really. Lots of snotlings in there, but they`re so sweet!

STILL TO DO: Completing the NG unit

HIGHS: Managing to keep up the work pace.
    LOWS: Staying focused at all..

    POINTS:
    - 270 pts, 6 River Trolls
    - 347 pts, 33 Big `Uns
    - 189 pts, 21 squigs & 7 herders
    - 65 pts, Snotling Pump Wagon
    - 159 pts, 28 Night Goblins
    - 75 pts, Night Goblin Shaman
    - 38 pts Night Goblin Big Boss

Remember that the points are with all items included.

    TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 837 + 1143 = 1980
DICE ROLL : never mind, I`ll comment on everyone.

    River Trolls

The orc and goblins/snotlings in the middle is only a unit filler

    Big `Uns

The heroes are there since they`re an integral part of the unit.

    Squig Herd

Had to use what I have so a few hoppers in there as well as some homemade squigs.

    Snotling Pump Wagon

More angles and some WiPs in my plog.

Night Goblins with netters upgrade, Night Goblin Shaman and Big Boss

Still have 3 ranks and the fanatics left before the unit is completed.

    WiPs I`m working on:
    - Goblin Big Boss on Gigantic Spider
    - 10 OOP Spider (but with new) Riders
    - 2 Spear Chukkas
    - The last 3 ranks of Night Goblins amd the three fanatics (and possibly a lord level NG shaman)

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 9 (May painting and June WIP)

Zark's Averland Dogs of War expansion Month 8

    Roll: 1

    Units:
    Gogmagog the Giant
    6 Golgfag's Ogres
    10 more Vendetta
    Bronzino & 2 Galloper Guns
    25 Pikemen with Full Command
    25 Pikemen with Full Command

    Points: 205 + 405 + 80 + 265 + 175 + 175 = 1305pts

    Total: 4761 + 1305 = 6066pts

Another productive month! If I keep this up I may run out of DOW to paint by the end of the tale... (fat chance)

Other than the Pikemen the minis are all standard, again making use of Freebooters Fate Brotherhood minis (I have all of them except the old man from the recent expansion). The Pikemen are the from the old State Troop set with brass rod pikes, though fortunately got them off eBay so didn't have to convert them all!

Back to bad pics this month, I need to get myself a lightbox...

Gogmagog, the littler of the Brothers Durnog (Seriously, this giant looks tiny alongside the old Marauder one, must take a comparison pic sometime...)

Golgfag's Ogres, bunch of heavies for hire. I thought Golgfag was a bit short for a bruiser compared with modern minis, so added a big rock to the base.

More members of the murder squad, bringing them up to 16 so far (however I may split out the doctor and the fencer in the future).

Bronzino's Galloper Guns, mobile artillery. I really lucked out and managed to get these for sane prices on eBay! Always been one of my favourite concepts for DOW, even if they aren't too practical.

Two as of yet un-named Pikemen regiments, the oranges and the blues. Not much to say other than they help fill out the core nicely. Am pretty happy with the freehand on the banner.

Really not sure what will be painted next. Am moving house at the end of the month so most of my stuff is being packed away in preparation, though otoh I am housesitting again for a couple of weeks and won't have much else to do... though pretty much all of the rest of the minis I have for the army require a lot of TLC before they are ready for paint!
Zark not believe in democracy. We go left!

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 9 (May painting and June WIP)

Army: at least 1000pts of divers Chaos dwarfs

Total Points for the Month: 3 warriors are about 36 points

Total Points for the Tale: 441 pts

This was more in the spirit of deciding a colorscheme for the army. I like it for the bighats and the warhammer forge CDs, but the marauders and earlier ones will
have individual schemes. What do you think?

Plans for Next Month: Working on more MM90 dwarfs and LoA CDs. I hope i will manage more points than this time.

As soon as Malorian is back in town, he can post the table in the first post, as I just dropped it in his mailbox.

Also, for me a joker this month. I did finish 53 points worth of savage orcs (and put A LOT together, and basecoated many models), but I really want to have the whole unit done before I put them down. I really hope to have all 25 done this month, and thus putting me actually back in line for finishing 1000 by the end.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 9 (May painting and June WIP)

Army : Orcs and Goblins (boyz category)

    Unit : 3 stone trolls (135 pts), 2 squig hoppers (24 pts), 2 squigs (16 pts) = 175 pts (958 pts/1200 pts)

    Dice roll = 2

Highs : repainting those trolls to match the newest one is great. Also finishing painting all of my squigs/hoppers is cool and I'll be able to move on to something else.

Lows : I was a bit fed up at the end painting the trolls, I'm glad they are finished now.

Army shot and things to come :

Huge apologies guys, but this month is going to have to be a Joker for me. May was a fething hard month for several reasons and my productivity slumped to pretty much nothing. I'll make up for it in June with some more Corsairs and some Cold One Knights.

    1000 points high elves

BACKGROUND: this army defends the forest Kingdom of Avelorn.

UNIT: 15 spearmen, including standard bearer, musician and Sentinel (champion).

PAINTING: the cloth, leather and metals are painted in the same way as my other units.
Each unit has two spot colours. In this case black and pink. I’ve tried to avoid too much resemblance with dark elves.
These plastic spearmen were some of the first models I painted - long, long ago.
The sculpts are not as sharp as newer ones, and it doesn’t help that this is the second layer of paint.
But I think it turned out ok. It makes them look a bit like grizzled veterans.

CONVERSION: the musician is just a regular spearman. I cut of his left arm and replaced it with an arm with a trumpet.

BASING: Micro Art temple and dark temple bases.

STILL TO DO: 1) Freehand design on the cloak.
    2) The banner and the shields. Brother Owl - who is an expert in sculpting green stuff - is ill.
I will post new pictures when the unit is completely finished.

HIGH: A lot of points this month.
LOW: Missing brother Owl. (I know you are lurking around here, get well soon!)

    POINTS: 160 (815 +1 Joker in total).

    DICEROLL: 3

Owl can spell his name ("Wol") and the word "Tuesday" (so that you know it isn't Wednesday). He can also read, although only if no-one is looking over his shoulder.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 9 (May painting and June WIP)

Army: The Stormbreaker Tribe [3000 Points Ogre Kingdoms]

Unit: Dolim, Son of Torgar (Maneater with Heavy Armour and Great Weapon)

Build/Conversion: Dolim is based on a standard Bull body, but I cut and resculpted his feet so that he is standing instead of moving forward. The Irongut sword was cut and repositioned, he got additional armour from the Mournfang box as well as a spare axe from the Black Orc box. The poor Goblin was made from the Common Goblin sprues while the shield is from the Orc Boyz box. Dolim's gutplate is the Dwarf shield which comes with the Ironguts box. Lastly, the stone he stands upon is slate from the WHF Basing kit.

    Still to do: Finished.

Highs: My first try at striped pants! On the Ogre Stronghold I read that many members find it unfortunate that no one uses striped pants on their Ogres anymore. While a bit crude I like how they came out and the direction of the stripes works well with the static pose and the sword pointing downwards. I plan to give each Maneater different pants, and some more will be striped, I think!

    Lows: None.

Points: 65 (Maneater with Heavy Armour and Great Weapon)
Together with the 2619 from the last months that makes a total of 2684 points!

    Dice roll: 1

Next month: As seen in the WIP pictures, there will be more Maneaters. Hopefully, as June is exam month and even outside of University there is lots of stuff going on making it difficult to find some painting time... and I do not want hasty paintjobs on my Maneaters!

    Actual Pictures:

    WIP's:

Sor-An of the Shifting Sands & Grogh Stonefist

Bagurt the Collector & Bork the Adamant

See you soon, I will try to comment on everyone this month as well since I failed to comment last month...but many thanks for your positive feedback, it really keeps me going!

About time I came back, eh?

    Army: Ogre Kingdoms

Unit: Stornhorn (minus rider) and two alternate Hunter riders for my Stonehorns.

Build/Conversion: The Stonehorn has been converted so that it is facing forwards and I broke off one of the horns so that it looks battle-damaged. The two Hunters are made from the Stonehorn kit with bits sourced from my bits box.

Still to do: The basic rider and the seat (part of next month).

Highs: Getting back into the swing of things after the past two months.

Lows: As per usual, the pictures .

    Points: Stonehorn - 200; Hunter A - 180; Hunter B - 191

    Total Points: 1203

    Dice roll: 2

Next month: The seat + basic rider of the Stonehorn and either a Thundertusk or some Mournfang Cavalry.

Hi everyone. I'm still in with my Gnomes - I've finished a bunch this week.

I'll have Chaos, Renaissance Dwarf, and Gnome updates for you in the next few days.

    Great work so far everyone!

But in honor of my up coming daddy-hood I present a baby-joker.
