Thread: Okay for real: will you be purchasing finecast regiments?

Re: Okay for real: will you be purchasing finecast regiments?

    Depends on the models.

Maybe it's because I was brought up on wargaming when every model was lead it doesn't bother me. I'm still trying to get my head around plastic. It's terrible stuff plastic you know. It has a lot lower melting temperature than lead.

Only thing I like about plastic and finecast is that the paint doesn't chip if you drop it. So depending on the models that are released I'd buy it if I wanted to update something.

Ideally everything would be plastic - but meh, I disagreed with people saying that 20 years ago, I can't change that now

I think I am pretty much done buying GW new unfortunately. I can't bring myself to pay the prices, especially since I have more than enough models to do 3k in 3 different armies already. Some of it is 10-15 years old, but whatever. I love the new stuff but it's just to expensive. They've tried to make some extra money from their core audience, which I understand. It's killing both GW and local stores though. None of my friends even go to the store anymore. Sure, they do okay with Magic still but it's the same dusty GW boxes for months now. It's sad.

Voted very unlikely only because there is no option for No chance in hell would i even consider for a second buying a regiment anywhere near that cost. the boxes contain 5 models (not even a remotely reasonable number),cost a rediculous price and they're finecast so you may have to do the customer service limbo to even get a respectable scuplt.

Re: Okay for real: will you be purchasing finecast regiments?

Well I will not be buying at those prices. I do not play those armies, but if Wood Elf Eternal Guard went to that price then there would be no way I would pay it. A unit of 30 would cost me £123. There is no way I would consider that acceptable value for money, even if there were no production issues with finecast. In fact at present prices I put a 30 strong unit at £77, which is still too high for my taste and why I don’t own the unit yet.

Now if these were boxes of 10 then £61.50 per unit of 30 would be more appealing. Still expensive but, at closer to £2 per model, it doesn’t feel like a rip off.

Ultimately the problem is that in a mass battle game like warhammer fantasy infantry models really are little more than wound counters. They may be of high quality but their visual appeal is generally as a group from a distance, unlike say heroes or monsters which are valued as individual pieces. Being asked to pay that kind of money is going to put off a lot of people I would guess.

I think skirmish games can get away with high prices per model but in games like fantasy with higher model counts this is unreasonable. I think Mantic, in this regard, has the right idea.

I'd have no problem buying finecast regiments, but no way in hell at that price! Lets just hope this is an experiment on pricing structure, or a stopgap before new models.

    Hell. No.

Those units a ludicrously expensive as they are. No amount of detail justifies that price increase.

Its also bad enough that I have heard Finecast melts really easy, so I am paranoid with playing with one character outside on a hot summer's day, or in a warm conservatory. Like I am going to risk an entire £100+ regiment.

This is going to be WAAAYYYYY to expensive for me, so hell no I won't buy. Too bad I wanted some goblin chariots, guess that'll never happen.

Doesn't matter what the quality is, I won't be buying models that cost that much, even if I made more income. It simply isn't worth it.
Is not Thunder Stomp itself a special rule? If that is your argument then Thunder Stomp can not be allowed to let you Thunder Stomp, as being able to Thunder Stomp benefits Thunder Stomp, therefore you can't use the Thunder Stomp rule in conjunction with Thunder Stomping to Thunder Stomp. ~Aglemar

unlikely, as I don't play any of those armies that are getting finecost kits, and I sure as hell wouldn't pay that much for them.

Re: Okay for real: will you be purchasing finecast regiments?

I'm actually a bit depressed by looking at the [very natural] results of this poll.. Here's my thinking:
Surely Games Workshop are aware that they are pushing the limits of elasticity of demand when opting to remake Executioners/WitchElves into FineCast (rather than the much anticipated plastic kits that so many of us have been waiting for!) - so why do they do it?
Isn't it reasonable to assume that they have weighed the decreased sales by volume (with FineCast) versus the [presumable] decrease of Revenue for each sold kit (with Plastic) and simply concluded/realized that despite over-all reactions like this thread-poll they'll still come out 'winning' on FineCast compared to plastic. (?)

Now that's not a fun realization, me thinks. It means GW feels they're cornered into giving us less of what's already old at a higher price, rather than something 'new'. Seems to me it'll only feed further into the vicious cycle of people foregoing GW models for alternative producers - further decimating GW sales and making them even more prone to FineCast 'remakes' as opposed to updating their ranges with the things we truly desire as a Community.

    Or am I just over-reacting?

Re: Okay for real: will you be purchasing finecast regiments?

I voted "unlikely" as there are no units released at the moment in metal I can see myself purchasing if they were released in Finecast - the ones that are in Metal I'd rather get OOP metals on ebay. Though they may release some decent units released in the future - or rereleases of classic metals (such as the stunning Stone Trolls) that I might buy.

The results of this poll are probably not totally accurate. A lot of people will splorf blood out of their nose when they see the new prices and say "I'll never pay that!", then, a few months down the line, make an exception and buy the odd box. So the reaction might not be as overwhelmingly depressing as the poll makes it look.

Even so, though, those numbers aren't pretty.

You're likely right. As I read your post I caught myself thinking that if the quality of the finecast models is noticably better than the originals, I might buy a box or two just for the front rank.

Re: Okay for real: will you be purchasing finecast regiments?

I've bought two finecast models so far and both of them weren't properly cast, I'm not buying finecast anymore let allone a unit of finecast models.

Re: Okay for real: will you be purchasing finecast regiments?

The price became to high with me with the 40k Ork release and the 5 man plastic boxes for that. And that was what, £3 per model, making building any kind of unit out of them more costly than I was willing to pay. This would boost the price even higher per model for units you need to make even bigger. I've already pretty much stopped doing GW games, that kind of pricing just ensures that there is no way I'd be back.

Re: Okay for real: will you be purchasing finecast regiments?

I've basically become a full-bore plastic snob these days and generally turn my nose up at any unit that needs to be fielded in large numbers, but only comes in metal or finecast. I'm still happy with metal characters and/or monsters, but I wouldn't be able to stomach a ranked unit that is only available in that form.

I envy the GW wargamers of ~10 years from now, since they'll most likely be able to consider the concept of an all-metal unit and think "Holy crap, those actually existed???"

I'm also starting to take an optimistic stance towards Finecast, and hoping that it simply represents a transitional period between the old era of 50/50 metal/plastic and the upcoming all-plastic era that I hope to see. The arrival of the plastic characters in the last year has made this a real possibility, rather than a far-off dreamscape.

Re: Okay for real: will you be purchasing finecast regiments?

I voted "very likely" ... but I'm mad that way

Seriously tough, we don't even have a confirmation for those prices, and the horrible +67% is only for the Dark Elf range ... seems like a misprint to me ...

BUT, I'm an O&G/WoC/DoC/Beast player, with a bit of High Elves thrown in the mix, and even if I already have 36 Squig Hoppers and 20 Squigs, I still need more squiggy goodness ... and I noticed that the price increase on those (again, rumoured) is in the 20~25% range, so I'll probably buy a Hero/Lord on Giant Squig and a couple of boxes of Squigs ... simply because what I find on eBay for those models are EVEN MORE horribly priced monstrosities badly painted and touted as "Pro-Painted OMG BUY IT NOW!" ...

Of course I would prefer all-plastic and cheaper (except that I find Mantic models ugly), but when I started collecting minis 25 years ago, it was already bloodily expensive ...

    So, nothing new I'm afraid.

To clarify, all prices and box sizes have been confirmed (they were taken straight out of the new store-ordering catalogue). Additionally, even though they are currently "just for the Dark Elves" this is likely going to be the new price point for fantasy special choices in finecast, so we're likely to see the same thing for other armies with future finecast waves.

    Darn ... I stand corrected then ...

Methinks I'll try to buy what I "need" before the next price hike ...
