The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 10 (MAY completed work & JUN WIP)

Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012!

What is the Tale all about?
The aim of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! AI, BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2011 to August 2012), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 'Jokers'. You can play a 'Joker' at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you play a 'Joker' then feel free to post a suitable image instead (of a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is for completed entries for last month (up until the 10th) and work in progress (WIP) for this month (from the 11th). Please only post completed work for last month until the 10th.

From the 11th, feel free to post any WIP pictures of what you're going to be painting this month, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like in the thread, but please keep it WIP from the 11th of the month. Do not post any completed work for this month until after the next thread opens at the start of next month.

If you have not posted by the 11th of the month, then you will have to play one of your 'Jokers'. If you have failed to post by the 11th of the month and have already played both of your 'Jokers', then unfortunately you will be out of the Tale.

    Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : Unfortunately yes, you are now too late to join in this Tale. Don't worry though, the Tale will be running again late this year (sign-up in August for a September start).

Q : Do I have to stick to just one army?
A : No, you can paint more than one army if you want to! Quite a few people like to paint more than one army at a time, so if you fall into this category then just list each army you wish to paint when you sign up. Your armies don't have to be the same size, but please aim to paint at least 500 points for each army, otherwise you're probably better off starting your own plog if you just want to paint lots of random things. For the purposes of posting, as long as you aim for 10% of your combined total each month then it doesn't matter what order you paint things in. You could paint 10% of each army each month, or alternate armies each month, or 5 months of one army followed by 5 months of another army, or whatever combination best suits you. Regarding Jokers, you would only need to post a Joker if you didn't paint anything for any of your armies that month. If you painted one army but not the other, you would simply need to post Army 1 (x points) and Army 2 (0 points).

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post 10% (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 10% per month. For example, if you're painting 2000 points that means 200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc. This way you won't depress those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, but we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you're painting 2000 points and you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character/tank/unit?
A : This happens a lot. If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over two months (the sort of time your general/tank/expensive unit deserves!). For example, one year my monthly target was 200 points and I painted a Stompa (600 points). I split painting the model into (roughly) 3 months of 200 points, posting new WIP shots each month.

Q : Do I have to play my 2 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to play them at all. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale!

Q : Can I 'buy back' my 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : Yes, you can 'buy back' your 'Jokers' during the Tale. If you have already played a 'Joker' and manage to get a month ahead (either by painting double one month or painting a bit more than your target for a few months), then just state in your entry for that month that you wish to 'buy back' your 'Joker' and I'll take it off for you.

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the [D&D dice roller] if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

    ##############################

I'll start off by posting my completed entry for last month. Feel free to copy my post to use as a template (edited to suit your army), but as long as you post your Monthly total, Total to date, Unit(s) painted and a picture then that's fine.

If anyone has any other questions, please direct them to misterboff (me).
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

    Undying 14th Cromorian Legion (IG): April 2012 (D6 roll = 4)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 335 POINTS (MONTHLY TARGET: 175 POINTS)
TOTAL TO DATE: 1605 POINTS (TARGET TO DATE: 1575 POINTS)
JOKERS PLAYED: 0 (The one that I have used has just been bought back)

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
2nd Lt Commander James "Patience" Firehawk possesses and undeniable talent for killing the enemies of the Emperor and proven ability to lead men in battle, though, neither of those is the reason for his success. Firehawk's true genius lies in the art of stealth, the inate ability to simply vanish the moment the eyes drift from him. That ability is coupled with a keen intellect have made him one of, if not the, most successful scout in the Cromorian Legions' history.

Through his tactical accumen Patience is often able to predict the future intentions of the enemy based on the current disposition of their forces and his intelligence reports are always twofold: including both an accurate description of the situation as it is and an account of how he believes events will unfold. In his earlier years commanders would often disregard these predictions as the posturing of an inexperienced youth. They learned the error of their ways very quickly. Whether his suggestions are heeded or not, Patience always seems to arrive at just the right moment with a well placed demolition charge.

Firehawk's abilities and achievements earned him a place in the Third Battalion's veteran division and the rank of Master Sergeant First Class within 18 months of his conscription to the Imperial Guard Proper. On his left shoulder pad Patience doesn't wear any commendation stamps, instead he wears the laurel encircled skull of the Dux Imperialis awarded to him for extreme heroism during the Cromorian repulsion of WAAAGH!!! S'Kul Ba'shar. He managed to hijack an ork gargant (he is yet to explain how) and turn it against the greenskin horde for nine hours before the orks managed to take it back - at which point Patience extricated himself from the machine and detonanted the demolition charge strapped to its reactor core. His actions changed not only the course of that battle but many scholars of war credit what is now known as the Patient Rampage as the turning point in a war the Imperium was losing.

It was only years later during the Cleansing of Emuldar that Patience received his first commision as an officer, the intervening time spent quite contentedly sneaking behind enemy lines and facilitating the victories of the Imperium. Eldar prism tanks descimated the Cromorian command structure within the first twenty minutes of the Battle of Tirren Pass. As a Master Sergeant not directly attached to any of the command squads Patience found himself the highest ranking soldier on the field and - after personally detonating the prism tanks on his way back to the Imperial lines - stepped seamlessly into command of six divisions of the Third and Eigth battalions and three Leman Russ battle tanks. Although two of the tanks and three and a half of the divisions were lost, Patience managed to hold the Eldar until the arrival of the entire Fourth and Tenth battalions supported by 16 battletanks and the Baneblade Tempered Retaliation.

Although Firehawk has commanded a number of successful battles since, his mandate as Lt Commander is primarily to plan, oversee and execute (often personally) the reconnaissance activities of the Third Battalion. He has proven hugely adept in this role and is tipped for promotion of the 14th Legion's General Staff upon the retirement of the current Head of Reconnaissance, Commander Renway, whose age and failing health have begun to hamper his ability to carry out his duties. Only just past his thirtieth birthday and already highly experienced and proven in battle, Patience is the perfect candidate to take over the position.

    UNIT(S):
Lt Commander James "Patience" Firehawk (Guardsman Marbo) - 65
Veteran Squad - Vox Caster, 3x Grenade Launchers - 90
Sarced Pyre: Hellhound - Dozer Blade, Extra Armour, Hunter-Killer Missile, Multi-melta - 180

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS:
Patience is built from the following bits:
Cadian shock trooper legs, torso and right arm - the one about to throw a grenade, but without the hand.
    Chimera commander head.
Hellhound commander bolt pistol left arm and shoulderpad.
    Cadian Kasrkin backpack and sword
Grenades, pouches and canteen from various IG sprues.

The vets are straight out the box with the exception of a few heads borrowed from other sprues and the vox caster guy who took a fair bit of modeling to get into position.

The hellhound is pretty much straight out the box too, but has all the weapons options magnetised and has the dozer blade from the chimera kit - which has been suitably beaten up.

    PAINTING/BASING:
Only thing I did differently was the ID number on the Hellhound. For all the previous vehicles I've freehanded the number on in white over the camo. For this one I painted a section white and used transfers for the numeral. It gives a cleaner result, since my freehand isn't what it could be.

Otherwise, pretty much the same as everything else I've painted so far... and I've already written enough for this submission.

    STILL TO DO:
    Nothing on these things.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Got quite a bit done this month, so that's good.
    Lows: Not much.

    NEXT MONTH:
I have some more chimeras and a command squad box on order. The command squad box will be used to make a commisar lord, primaris psyker, officer of the fleet astropath and something else I have yet to decide on. The chimeras will be used to build... well... chimeras... I guess. Hopefully that arrives soon enough for me to get a fair bit done by the end of the month.

Otherwise I'm going to go redo the ID numbers on the other tanks for match the Hellhound, since I quite liked the result.

2nd Lt Commander James "Patience" Firehawk:
He has a powersword... that doesn't work and he refuses to get it replaced. Says its Lucky or something. When I say it doesn't work, mind, I mean the powerfield doesn't work - the sword part still works perfectly fine for killing things. His bolt pistol uses ripper rounds which forgo the mass reactive core for extra propulsion and therefore extra penetration - the rounds don't detonate, though, which means that better precision is required to do fatal damage... Patience is very precise.

    Units:
    6 Meganobs, 3 with Kombi Skorcha's, 2 with Kombi-Rockits, 1 with Twin Shoota

    Painting:
Continuing to use the non traditional techniques and I have to say I am pleased with the results. I am working towards getting a solid table top standard as quick as possible. I think its a successful technique and as I said, I am pleased with the results.

I am using Scab Red, Thrakka Green Wash, Agrgax Earthshade wash, Vallejo Sky Blue, various GW paints for hoses etc. a Scorpion Green Drybrush for highlight, MIG pigments for the rust, with a touch of solar macharius orange super watered down.

    Basing:
Graveyeard Earth, Snakebite leather brown.. Dead Static Grass.

    Still to Do:
    Dull cote... thats about it.

    Highs and Lows:

    High:
Banging out some models I love. They are really great. I was lucky to get these bad boys in metal off of Ebay a while back. In game they work pretty well also.

    Lows:
Still not finishing the boys, which hover in the 85% range.
3 of the Meganobs went a little darker with the wash than I would have liked. I didn't police it quick enough.
Also, not getting to finish the truck.

Next Month: Finish the Trukk and get the Mega Dread Done... start some bikes. Or Lootas.

and a WIP for next month.

Monsterzonk's Heralds of Faith Space Marines

MONTHLY TOTAL: 150 POINTS (150 TARGET)
TOTAL TO DATE: 1035 POINTS (1500 TARGET)
    JOKERS PLAYED: 2

    UNIT(S):
Brother Epistolary Arvus Timothei with force weapon, bolt pistol, frag & krak grenades, psychic hood - 150 pts.

    STILL TO DO:
    Nothing.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Finishing on time surely feels good. I had very little spare time the last month, so I'm happy to be able to keep up with the Tale. On the other hand, my force feels rather small still, and tactically it's quite limited...

    NEXT MONTH:
Time for a few bigger projects I hope. Finishing the Terminator squad and maybe adding some transports...

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 10 (MAY completed work & JUN WIP)

Give_me_a_d's All Things Chaos: May 2012

    Monthly Total: 100pts (100 Target)
    Total To Date: 703pts
    Jokers Played: 2

    Background/ Theme:
A growing warp rift has spawned a daemonic host and is beginning to attract Chaos marines

    Unit(s):
A Slaughterfiend (Defiler with 2 extra DCCW) which would be 150pts but the body and legs are from the Soulgrinder that I painted ages ago. I have started on a body and legs for him but am only about half way through that. I'm therefore claiming 100pts and when I finish the body and legs next month that will be the remaining 50pts.

    Build/ Conversion:
This is a standard defiler with some additions; the sides of the torso have been converted to ball and socket joints for the 2 DCCW, which are standard defiler claws with Khorne symbols from the vehicle accessory sprue added. The head has had berzerker style 'ears' added using the shield from an Eldar guardian weapons platform as a base. There are also some additional skulls and Khorne symbols added to the torso. The torso also has 2 magnets added for the Skull Champion, so he doesn't fall off.

    Painting:
Very similar to the Berzerker - Sprayed black then basecoated Charadon Granite and drybrushed Dwarf Bronze. Red was then based with Mechrite, washed with Badab and highlighted with Blood red. The metal was further highlighted with gold or Mithril silver. The daemon face was further highlighted from red with Solar Orange and Vomit Brown, teeth and horns in Dheneb Stone and highlighted white, eyes in Gretchin Green with Scorpion Green and a dot of white to finish. Grey armour was done with Adeptus Battle Grey and washed with Badab Black and highlighted with Adeptus.

    Still to do:
Finish the body and legs but that comes next month

    Highs and Lows:
Highs: I'm very pleased with this.
Lows: I thought I might have been able to finish the body and legs as well but it wasn't to be.

    Next Month:
Finishing the Slaughterfiend and possibly more 'zerkers.

More photos in my chaos/daemons log.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 10 (MAY completed work & JUN WIP)

    Perplexiti’s Space Wolves: 2012

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 275

    TOTAL TO DATE: 2333

    JOKERS USED: 0

    BACKGROUND/THEME: Ragnar Blackmane’s Great Company.

UNIT(S): 4 more Wolf Guard in Tactical Dreadnought Armour, and a power armoured Wolf Guard.

    BUILD/CONVERSIONS: The only conversions are the combi-bolters, two combi-plasmas and a combi-melta.

PAINTING/BASING: Basecoated black, then a Fenris grey coat, with very heavy drybrushes of shadow grey then spacewolf grey. The metal bits were chainmail with a badab black wash. The gold is gryphonne sepia over chainmail.

STILL TO DO: Nothing but the basing, I've decided to sit down at the end of the tale and base all of them at once.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No lows, I'm stoked to have the painting of the guys done. I'll base them all when I get more basing material and glue and whatnot.

NEXT MONTH: Well......nothing, I'm done. What a strange feeling.

    Termies:

    Finished Army:

This years and last years tales combined:.

Well I'm happy to be done, although I still have the basing to do. But that's another day. All up it's around 4470pts, so I'm stoked to have painted that plus what I've been doing in the Fantasy tale too. Good luck to everyone still involved, and I'll still comment on everybodys work too.

    Alright, comments time.

    Page 1:

@misterboff: Niiice, that's a good looking mob of Orks now man! Great stuff.

@djc: Cool sentinels, I love all the extras you've stuck on all your vehicles. Slimey and grimey plaugebearers too.

@matt_17: Awesome guardsmen mate, I especially like your marbo counts as, looks fantastic.

@Xazil: Looks good mate, I'd have gone with silver for the necklacey thing, as I feel you lose the gold into the yellow tabard.

@razormasticator: Heh, that's a load of meganobz. They look really nice man. I'm looking forward to seeing that dread done too.

@Doi: Nice grots, they're so viciously cute.

@Monsterzonk: Looks really good man, you going to do any funky colours on the force sword?

@give_me_a_d: Sweet man, I didn't realise those 'ears' were extra until I read the comment.

Howdy gang, just letting you know that I'm not going to be able to update the second post until the weekend because I'm on holiday and left our laptop at home (duh!)... On the plus side, I'll be heading into a GW store today so should have an Ork Bommer soon...
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 10 (MAY completed work & JUN WIP)

    Some (belated) comments from me...

@djc: Great work getting the Beastmen to fit the Sentinels, and making the three of them look individual. I'm loving the brown Plaguebearer colour scheme too.

@matt_17: More brilliant work on your Guardsmen. Patience looks like he's armed to the teeth (which is appropriate), and the Vets and Hellhound are great too. I like how the white HK stands out.

@Xazil: I bet it's a nice change to paint an infantry sized model instead of another Dreadnought? It's a cool conversion, and gives your commander a lot of character. I think my favourite part is the Power Fist - is it a Chaos one?

@razormasticator: Waaagh! The Meganobz look great with your rusty colour scheme, and I really like the muted choice of colours for the wires at the back.

@Doi: Well done on getting your first lot of Grotz done - the second lot will be easier . Once again, I'm loving the red and yellow spot colours.

@Monsterzonk: An amazing paint job on a fantastic looking model. He suits the black colour scheme and I love his pose (although it does makes me think 'Stop... Hammer Time!' a little).

@give_me_a_d: Your Slaughterfiend looks lovely in an evil kinda way, and an innovative use of the Eldar bits for the 'ears' too.

@perplexiti: Another batch of unique looking Wolves, an impressive army shots to boot. Well done for getting so much done!
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 10 (MAY completed work & JUN WIP)

    Comment Time!

@ Mistaboff... impressive army shot my Friend! Good stuff. So how big is the group of Ard Boys now?

@ DJC your stuff is well painted and the gubbins really add character. and to echo Mistaboff's sentiments, the Heads look great on the drivers.
Demons look rocking too! I like the non traditional Brown color scheme.

@ Matt Your guard are well painted and the scheme is cohesive! The Camo and weathering on the Hellhound is sweet!

@ Xazil Great stuff in the power armor realm my friend!

@ Doi Snowy Grots! nice work. I find painting small models to be tricky.

@ Monstorzonk I really like the combo of the Creme and Black in addition to the blue. Good stuff man!

@ Gimmie a D, The Slaughterfiend is Dead Sexy! I like the metallic color/look the body has. Curious what you used for that. Is that the Charadon Granite and then Dwarf Bronze?

@ Perplexiti your wolves are coming together. Another solid unit added to your cohesive force.

I will try to throw another Army Shot up for everyone next month. I have alot going on, not only am I working on my Orks I am painting my Guard again and we have a 22,000 points Apoc game coming up in two weeks etc.
Lots going on, oh yeah... and 6th!!!!!

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 10 (MAY completed work & JUN WIP)

Well, time for some comments and replies!

@ misterboff: That really is an impressive army! I like the blue faces - very Deff Skull...

@ djc: Very cool! I quite like the pose of the rightmost sentinel, and the subtle weathering works really well! I think the bases might benefit from a few tufts of grass, though. Anything planned in that direction?

@ matt_17: The camo scheme of your Guard is very cool! Nice job all round, and the vox operator's pose works really well!

@ Xazil: The drum mag on the storm bolter looks rather menacing. Wouldn't want to face that firepower...

@ razormasticator: I really, really like the way you're painting your Orks! Colourful, yet gritty. And the bases are great as well.

@ Doi: Whooo! Grotz! Love 'em!

@ give_me_a_d: Lovely painting on that Defiler. And the 'Zerker headgear looks really cool!

@ perplexiti: Wow! What an army! Looking forward to seeing them all with their bases finished. And congrats on finishing ahead of time! Quite a feat!

    Replies:

@ perplexiti: Thank you! I'm not sure if I'll add some colour to the blade. I tried purple for the wiggly psychic thingy, but didn't quite like it... I might experiment a little, though...

@ misterboff: Thanks! Nothin' like a good Hammer Time...

@ razormasticator: Thanks a lot! I decided I didn't want him to be completely blue, so I used that sparingly. I'm quite happy with the scheme myself!

    Cheers,
    Monsterzonk
