    Thunderwolfs

Can you give a wolf lord mounted on a thunderwolf two sets of wolf claws and still have the rending hits in cc or not?

If not then how does canis get away with it?

Could you stipulate between the two, ie this turn I'm gonna use my wolf claws, next turn I'll use rending?

    Q. Does a Thunderwolf Cavalry model with a special
close combat weapon (eg a thunder hammer) still have
    rending attacks? (p34)
    A. No. The description of the Thunderwolf mount on
page 62 says that it ‘… has the Rending special rule in
close combat with any attack that does not use a
special close combat weapon’. This applies to
Thunderwolf Cavalry as well (and Canis Wolfborn, for
    that matter).
So it doesn't work with lightning claws.
I think I read somewhere that you must use a special weapon if you have one, but I don't remember where...

So could I use the wolf claws 1 round and next round rending or can I use both at the same time with re rolls?

No. If you have a Special CCW, you have to use it, which prevents the Thunderwolves' rending. In this case, the rending isn't a SCCW, but a rule of the unit.

If instead you had, for example, a powerfist and a sword that granted rending, you could choose between them each round.

Why do you think you could use both? Magic Hat already showed the FAQ that prevents that.

So where does this leave canis who has wolf claws and rending from his mount?

Until somebody invents a weapon destroying effect - or 6th edition let's you set aside your special weapon - it's impossible for Canis to ever use his Rending.

He has it because every wolfrider has it. Being able to use it is irrelavent.

A bit like Old One Eye, who has the generic Carnifex ability to boost initiative, but a weapon making him I1.

QFT. It's like those poor Tyranid Carnifexes or any other model with an Initiative bonus (for example Furious Charge) and a weapon option that takes him down to I1 anyway. The named Carnifex in the Tyranid Codex comes in that particular configuration when bought, even.

Canis is not a guy with a Thunderwolf mount as Wargear. He is a single model with the rending rule. This is why. He's technically just a cavalry model.

At least, if I had to venture a guess, that is where I'd start looking.

It does say in the SW FAQ on the games workshop site that you lose the rending when you have a special weapon.

    Re: Thunderwolfs

so basically all Thunderwolves get Rending but can't use it if your character has a special weapon. *notes down in case of facing some*

    Re: Thunderwolfs

Well you can only take 1 special weapon in a squad anyway, so just note which one has the thunder hammer.
