    Digital codexes are here

Didn't see a thread on this, but this is on the front page of the GW website: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/co...&aId=22200010a . First codex is Space Marines (the current 5th edition one), and the "How to paint guide" is also there as well. Sadly it's only available to iPad owners, but I really do hope this will change.

    About damn time too.

Someone else posted it in the 2012 thread but this deserves its own thread.

    /sigh poor Android devices.

I really like that it isn't just a PDF. It looks fully interactive.

Yeah looks like we spotted it at the exact same time (near enough - 5-6 minutes between the posts!). I've got used to checking GW's website at midnight on Fri/Sat now as that's when most of the big stuff is posted, whether it be advance orders or things like this.

And yes, shame about the android devices.

Its a secret plot by GW and apple to make me want to buy an iPad... it bloody well worked. (In all seriousness it looks like there using an Apple provided tool to author the books and get the interactivity in them which is why its on the iBookstore unfortunately)

This is a good move though from gw, means we can have Legal copies of codexs and the interactivity just looks really well done. Off to pc world tomorrow then..

Digital version of GW books = good.

Proper, interactive digital version that isn't just a straight copy of the paper book = very good.

iPad only = very, very, very, very bad. What, does nobody at GW realise people might have an Android tablet... or a laptop?

Price = no idea, as they don't mention it on the website, and I don't have iTunes so can't even check.

Ultimately, a really exciting, great move from GW, utterly wasted by making it iPad only.

well I just checked on the iBookstore on my desktop and a scroll is 45p so gona guess a codex will cost £20

    Edit:

Just found it, codex SM will be £25

Oh...oh my. This does look promising indeed

Oh and "Sun-Tzu", even though you're probably happy you get to complain about it, it's hardly "wasted" by making it iPad only. I agree that it sucks for other platforms but it's still by far the most common tablet OS. You wouldn't call a Windows only program wasted, would you?

    GW goes digital

So GW has decided that it's time to release the Codexes and army books for the ipad.

    http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/co...&aId=22200010a

The apps seem to be quite interactive and fun to use, shame it's only for apple.
I can't find the space marine codex on itunes, but they are charging 0.49 euros for a scroll of binding. Cheap for GW I guess, but still quite expensive IMO

Would be great if I could use on my Android. I have an iTouch but they won't open for it, and I am not buying a $400 device just to download a book I can by for $35 :/

Maybe they will do a PDF or epub version for us poor folks who can't afford a iPad and GW stuff!

iBooks Author is a very nice program and does make adding those cool interactive bits really easy. As far as I know there isn't anything else out there that can match it at the moment.

I do think digital rules are step forward and hope they make the most of it.

Chances are it will be on android too very soon, they arent stupid and will know android is now much more popular and widespread than iOS. Most companies do this, release it on iOS first then follow shortly after with the android version. Its generally because its easier to get something to work properly on the ipad/iphone due to them all running the same version of the software, whereas android is very fragmented due to different versions everywhere.

So in short, I wouldnt worry, chances are this will be android too very soon.

I'm ecstatic they are going digital! Maybe this will speed up codex releases Hopefully going iPad first is just a first step and will open it up.

    Re: Digital codexes are here

Going iPad only before launching an Android version has happened plenty of times, but most things tend to be simultaneous now though. Given how long it has taken them to reach this point, they might have not wanted to sink money into developing two versions at the same time. The success or failure of the iPad version probably holds the fate of an Android version in its "hands"... Kind of a catch 22 considering not having an Android version in the first place could cost them sales, leading them to think e-books are a failure.

    Re: Digital codexes are here

I think the whole iPad thing is that there using apples authoring tools to produce the interactive books ( which came out in January if I'm correct) so I think it only works on the iPad

    Re: GW goes digital

I've just seen the promo in the web and was curious about the price of the codex (it asks for itunes installed to browse the ibookstore and as I don't want to have it around I can't look for it).

0.49€ for the modern version of the downloadeable pdf they used to have around in the web for new/too old special characters is a bit... GamesWorkshopian, I suppose.

    Edit: just saw an update.

Here is a link to find more iBooks. iTunes is not currently showing all the titles via the search, and I am told it make take some time for them all to show correctly.

24.99£ the digital codex. Wow, GW, just wow. You never cease to amaze me xD

Too bad its not out for Android as I just bought myself a new Transformer Prime and they'd be getting money in their pocket. On the plus side this maybe be foresight into GW frequently updating the digital codexes with each FAQ. Knowing them they'll charge you for the download though

I'd be much happier if I could use it, actually. Or - let me guess - I'm just a "hater"?

    (1) iOS only just has the largest tablet OS market share... Android is 39% and growing. So GW have basically cut their potential sales to tablet owners nearly in half by making it iPad only, compared to if it supported Android too (and potentially Windows 8 in future).

    (2) Tablet OS is one thing. Again... what's wrong with a laptop? Or a phone, come to that! Never mind my Android tablet, my Android phone has a resolution almost the same as an iPad (1280x720 instead of 1024x768) - why can't I use it on that? I've got a PC, a laptop, a tablet and a bleeding edge smartphone, and GW don't want my custom because I don't have an iPad? Welcome to the new connected world of tomorrow!

So yes, actually. Wasted opportunity making it iPad only, because a good percentage of people who would otherwise be interested, will not be able to buy it.

Just found it, codex SM will be £25
    Ah...

    ...never mind.

Really happy about this, and the new books look great. I hope they release 6th edition as a digital book next month, and down the road do their own Army builder app and WD digital subscription.

    Re: Digital codexes are here

    2 reasons.

    1) Apple has an iron grip on the kind of invasive DRM that GW gets off on.
    2) The Apple crowed is willing to pay 200% more for the same thing with an Apple logo on it, where Android users see the value in a dollar.

    Nah, just a pathological complainer

Listen, I get it, it sucks that it's not more widely available. But in the real world resources are finite and choices need to be made. GW chose, for once, to be right there with a new format as it starting to take hold. They conciously chose the interactive ebook format, which can be conviently created and deployed but pre-existing software, in thus case iBooks.

Or would you rather they would have done absolutely nothing, or postponed something like this till they had designed, coded and marketed their own content delivery system?
