You are referring to the word that for every other entry in the list spells out wha slot it belongs to, right? Since every other entry lists its slot there but the devilfish does not, the context is right there: the devilfish is a 'transport' choice. Yes, there are no transport slots, so yes, that means you can't take one on its own in a standard FO chart. If it weren't for the FW and PF transport options, it would indeed be a useless entry.

If that hard to read word didn't mean anything, Ethereals, stealthsuits, Vespid, Pirahnas, Hammerheads, Skyrays and Kroot would all be slotless as they are not listed under any slot headers and that hard to read word is the only mention of their slot anywhere near their entry.

You don't want 'transport' to mean anything, but it does. It does indeed mean that this choice goes into a slot that doesn't normally exist unless taken as a dedicated transport.
    Awesome. Awesome to the head.

Firstly, my copy of the Tau Codex (reprinted 2008) Has the 'Transport' wording running along the entry, just like all of the other choices have 'troops', 'fast attack' etc.
It's pretty clear what it means.
But in case that isn't clear enough it's title is (Tau Codex pg. 36)
    Transport: Devilfish Troop Carrier
It is stated twice that it is a transport.
And pretty easy to figure that it is the dedicated transport for Fire Warriors.

"Do you use the number on the bottom of the die to determine your rolls? Because the book doesn't discuss that the top is the correct side to read, either. Some things are just THAT obvious."

Poor eyesight on your part does not a rules argument make.
Man, I've seen this all before, and there's only one way it can end. In blood, tears, and the limp-wristed flailing of nerd-slaps.

Yep, and given this discussion, only reasons I can see for some continuing to insist that it can be a Troops choice are
    1) they think it will somehow be advantageous
    or
    2) they are arguing for the sake of arguing, ie trolling.
    Either way, they're wrong.

But Land Raiders ARE Dedicated Transports in almost every codex that carries it. Just most of them have them ALSO as a Heavy Support unit. A Dedicated Transport is one purchased by a unit as its personal ride, and most Terminators can purchase a Land Raider as a DEDICATED TRANSPORT.

Tell that to Pathfinders (for whom it is REQUIRED), Fire Warriors, and Ethereal Honor Guardsmen. And yes, their FOC slot IS Transport, just like the Space Marine Rhino and Razorback.

    I do believe it's 2, yeah.

Even though Stealth Suits are Jump Infantry, which cannot mount Transports unless specifically identified to do so like the Storm Raven? This was a poor example.
