Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 2 finished pictures, WIP month 3

Sorry for the delay everyone - late shifts aren't very nice but you all get an extra day and for those in the UK, you get a free long weekend to paint to your hearts content

PLEASE DON'T COMMENT ON PEOPLES WORK UNTIL THE 9TH!

That gives everyone chance to get there figures in and stops the thread getting clogged up.

    WHATS IT ALL ABOUT THEN?

Well, quite simply, you paint one figure a month for the next six months. Post a picture up at the end of each month and a group shot at the very end. Yes, its that simple. 6 models – without doubt the easiest tale of painters on the interwebs!

Jokers are there as a life line, a back up should things go horribly wrong so don't feel bad about playing one. If for what ever reason you need a break, just post in that months thread that your playing a joker and feel free to find a suitibly appropriate joker picture as is tradition. If for whatever reason you can't post, don't panic – I'll assume you want to play a joker and probably PM you to make sure everythings okay

Threads will open up on the first of each month, and you'll have seven days to post finished pictures after which please take the time to comment on as many peoples work as you can. The 'tale of's are all about helping each other and support. The more you comment, the more comments you'll get back!

A WORD ON PHOTOS – IMPORTANT!
    640x480 please! Or use thumbnails.
If you really really want to show off a bigger picture, then put a link to it – it means those using slower connections aren't waiting for big pictures to load.
You can use things like photobucket and tinypic to upload pictures. If you have any difficulties feel free to PM me and I'll guide you through it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I still join in?
A: YES! PM me or post in this thread and I'll add you to the list

Q : How much do I have to paint?
A : There is a minimum of one mini per month. If you paint more then that's great but for TOSP, its all about the quality over the quantity so put a bit of extra time into each piece and don't be afraid of asking for advice. Don't worry if you aren't the next Mike McVey - paint to the best of your ability, learn, and do the next one better!

Q : Can I include fluff in my months post?
A : Yes, go for it, but try not to make it too long - much like the pictures, its hard to scroll through lots of text on a slower internet connection. Feel free to link to it though if you have a plog on warseer.

Q : I have a question which isn't covered here/You did something wrong/Why aren't you as good at this as Gabriel?
A : Bah there's always one isn't there! Shoot me a PM If theres anything your struggling with, want to chat about, or if I've done something wrong then PM me because thats what I'm here for. I'm a rather chatty bloke and I'm more then happy to help people out where I can and when I can't, I can usually point you in the right direction.

    Q : Can I drop out?
A : No you can't, why should you?

Q : Didn't another guy run this last year?
A: Yep, the mighty DAGabriel, scourge of guildkind. Unfortunately he's a little swamped with work at the moment so I'm keeping his seat warm until things settle. I've also dubbed this season 2, as we might have a second tale this year (with DA hopefully back in the hot seat)

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 2 finished pictures, WIP month 3

    THIS MONTH:

6 Aenglish footmen from Red Box Games. Their shields are painted to match the Watch Captain's religious symbol (he's not painted yet). I plan to use GW's LotR rules right now, but if something else comes along that works well there's always a chance to change. I'll use Rohan stats for the Aenglish and Uruk Hai scouts for the HelsVakt hordesmen.

Highs: Great figures and fun to paint. Red Box has easily become my favorite range of figures and I can't get enough of them! Lows: None what so ever!

    WHAT'S NEXT?

I have two more footmen and Watch Captain Whistlocke to complete. If I have the opportunity to gets some more figures, I'll have some more HelsVakt Hordesmen to add, if not they'll be in August.

Here's a shot of them "in action" against some HelsVakt Hordesmen:

    This month:
2 Infinity models: a Nomad reverend custodier and a Combined Army seed-soldier (again!).

HIGHS AND LOWS: I'm rather satisfied with my first attempt at SENMM on the custodier. Although it is very time consuming, I think it was worth it (furthermore, that reverend custodier model is full of tiny details and I felt I would never finish it). As for the seed-soldier, I feel like I won't be able to get the purple as rich as I used to with the new GW paints. Will probably go back to finishing my lonely pot of liche purple on the rest of my Combined Army

WHAT'S NEXT: more Nomads and more Combined Army!

    Reverend Custodier:

    THIS MONTH
Two figures for this month (yes actual figures this time!), Galan Quaterbane from Warploque Miniatures and a PreePree from the World of Twilight.

    HIGHS AND LOWS
After a good start it took an age to finish off Galan as my time just dried up. I finally managed it and just had enough time left to paint the PreePree. I'm fairly happy with how they turned out.

    WHAT'S NEXT?
I had hoped to paint up some Fubarnii knights from the World of Twilight but ran out of time so am going to start painting them today, my nephew is over so we are having a painting day so I can teach him a few simple techniques (he's an Ork player). If I get the time I'd also like to paint up a Bushido dragon which we bought for our newborn son at Salute, he was born in the year of the Dragon so seemed like a good idea. Get them while they are young

    WHAT'S NEXT?
I will leave Malifaux and try some Retribution of Scyrah instead.

    THIS MONTH
    2 More Naffatûns from Infinity.

    HIGHS AND LOWS
I'm quite happy with the base of the female Naffatûn, it pretty much turned out how I had hoped. The mini themselves are cool but nothing specific to report, it paints the same as the previous one.

Still terribly disappointed by my photos. It took me almost one hour to make them, fiddling with camera settings, adjusting lightning the best I could, and it still sucks: I had to trash half of the photos for insufficient lightning, and on the rest, most of the highlights/blending are not visible and even though I correctly set white balance manually the pictures turned out slightly bluer than normal (it's particularly visible on the bases - they should be white-grey, not blue-grey). Good equipment, bad photographer.

    WHAT'S NEXT?
More Infinity of course I have a Janissary that's almost finished, and started working on 3 Ghulams. I hope I can finish them all, that would double my number of painted Infinity minis

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 2 finished pictures, WIP month 3

    This Month:
Big deviation from what I was hoping to get accomplished. I moved onto a new commission, and thus get to paint some Necromunda! Starting with a House Cawdor Gang. I also painted up 2 test models for the client's IG armies as well.

    Highs and Lows:
Due to the time spent abroad for work I was unable to spend time on my Moran Hunter for my Nomads. I was able to paint up things for my DOC army while travelling, and also got to test out some speed techniques in between days out of the country on this topic. Considering that I spent more time in UK than Turkey this month, I think that is a positive.

    What's Next?:
Finishing the rest of the Cawdors now that the first model is finished ( and signed off on from the client ). Try as I might to finish the Moran Hunter and Koalas.

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 2 finished pictures, WIP month 3

    THIS MONTH

Well I've not had loads of time so this month's painting was largely decided for me as I needed to get Inq28 models done for one warband and then I entered a competition at another site so that model needed doing. That just left the Greylords who got painted because they were pretty easy to paint.

    HIGHS AND LOWS

Low - Probably flinging the Inquisitrix in red across the room then spending hours trying to find her and rebuild her before I could finish her. High - converting three mercs jacks to start painting shortly. Really enjoyed that challenge.

    WHATS NEXT ?

This lot possibly. Rok the troll I'm now thinking of waiting on to paint a stack of trolls together. The Inq28 model has to be done by Tuesday night as he is being played with on Saturday.

    This month:

    Also, last months (Caught up)

highs: Finally finishing the jezzail team, and finally giving my skaven a painted leader. Also finally getting a hobby area set back up.

Lows: Painting in the midst of a move is a pain!

Whats next: Finishing up the other 2 jezzail teams, the warpgrinder, and as many other furry rats as I can get painted.

I know that they aren't based.. yet... I have yet to decide on how I will base the army, so that will be done in one big go.

    THIS MONTH:
Two Vstonin and three Varriers for Relic’s Vaettir from Tor Gaming.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Getting a lot done and still not being fed up with doing more Vaettir.
Lows: Not finishing anything from other ranges. But that is mostly related to another high: I have started to paint Nightgoblins again after a long long time.

    NEXT MONTH:
The troll, more Vaettir and probably some Boglins as well.

    Two Vstonin (40mm base):

    Three Varriers (30mm base):

Late joiner here.... I prefer converting to painting so bear with me.... also I never finish bases...
    THIS MONTH
Various fantasy models for a Modified Mordheim campaign

    HIGHS AND LOWS
Being inspired to do conversions, then remembering i'm crud at painting.

    WHAT'S NEXT?
More of the same, got to work out a scheme for my turtle dudes and finish some more dwarves.

I actually painted quite a lot this month (for me), but i'm going to go with these for the log:

I know I'm already a bit late... I got everything set up ready to photo today and the batteries on the camera died. I'm still furious. I have no idea when I'll next have time to get some - but hopefully tomorrow morning.

Also being rather fashionably late here...

    THIS MONTH
A nice Succubus from Reaper, being used as a Nephilim for Malifaux

    HIGHS AND LOWS
Using Vallejo Liquid gold - its quite nice to have enough free cash to take a chance on a product, and even better when it pays off in spades. Its not that easy to work with, but boy does it get beautiful results.

    WHAT'S NEXT?
I honestly don't know. June is usually my 'too many projects' month and with my adventuring plog, the Saturnine, and my other secret project I'm a bit muddled. Two days off this week though thankfully so I'm thinking about getting the guild guard finished.

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 2 finished pictures, WIP month 3

Well I'm a bit slow on the uptake but here are my offerings for the month:

    THIS MONTH
Quar Fidwoggers - Fidwog is another royalist nation in the quar setting, fighting the good fight against Alykinder's Crusade. They stand about a head shorter than your average quar, as per the background (hardy mountain stock).

    HIGHS
Painting these guys was kind of a treat, because they're as-yet unreleased but the guys over at Zombiesmith wanted a painted set to display at Kublacon (SF Bay local con) and approached me. So my minis were in a glass display case for a long weekend, which was neat.

    LOWS
11 figures is a lot more than I'd normally want to paint in one month for this tale (or at all - I'm a slow painter!). I had fun with them but there were a couple late nights to get them ready in time and I'm feeling a tad burnt out.

    WHAT'S NEXT?
Not sure, either quar or Twilight fubarnii. Possibly a Joker - this is gonna be a busy month for me!

    So here they are:

Yawdryl (left) and Caerten (right). I use the different colored helmet wrappings for quick battlefield ID.

han-Gaefyn, the LMG guys. Lighting isn't great on this shot, but I love the pose on the left, holding the big gun in one hand and ammo belt in the other.

    Gaefyn charging.

    Gaefyn standing.
The great thing about the dwarves is that, even though there's this comic element, when they fight - they really fight!

    Fantasy Pirates:

This month : A Marauder skeleton ... THE Marauder skeleton.

    The crew so far:

    Highs : Got something painted.
Lows : Just the one guy done.
    Whats next : Saratosa pirate.

    ...and hopefully some cowboys.

Re: Tale Of Skirmish Painters season 2 - Month 2 finished pictures, WIP month 3

Offensively late, I know, so I'll make up for it with quantity!

    THIS MONTH
This month was a funny one - I've been very busy with a number of commissions (an army for Ogre Kingdoms, nearly finished now, and a Manticore and Chimera for Storm of Magic), and also went to a major tournament with my Dark Eldar at the start of the month - A Small Matter of Honour run by the Sad Muppets Society and held at Triple Helix Wargames. Fantastic tournament, though maybe I'm biased as I won Best Painted Army and came Third Place overall, taking home a pair of fancy trophies!

The tournament was a real ballbreaker for my Dark Eldar - I've never come so close to winning a serious Tournament before, and as it was I was on Top Table for the last game, playing a vicious seven turn game that saw a final result of 15-12 Kill Points. A narrow loss, but deserved - my opponent was a great player, and to do it with Sisters of Battle as well was a shock for everyone!

Anyway, how does that affect the Tale? As the final of the Tournament was being played I joked to my friends if I didn't win I'd quit 40K and start Warmachine.

So I bought a Gatorman army later that day...

    HIGHS
Painting a serious amount of models. I'm vowing to have the Gatormen done by the end of June and the only thing holding me back is the delayed delivery of a couple of items. I'm also very pleased with Deadpool and the Daemon-lady.

    LOWS
Not best pleased with my Infinity efforts this month - the models are so damn detailed I never feel I'm doing them justice. I trust when I have more of them doen they'll look good as a team and that will keep me happy.

    NEXT MONTH
Finish the Gatormen as much as I can, do two characters for the Inq28 and work on finalising the 75pt Nomads.

    ONTO THE PICS!

    Gatormen Posse

    Heavy warbeasts

And onto the Inq28 - first up, a Mercenary adversary for the warbands to hire or fight

Next up another Adversary - I'm either running her as a Daemonhost or a summoned Slaaneshi Daemon. Background to follow.

And finally the Moderators from Bakunin - my Infinity submission for the month

And the WIP for next month - once again, the gunslinger and hired gun for Inq28

And the rest of the horde for Hordes. Five Gatormen are gonna round this off, plus maybe a Thrullg and a Feralgeist if I'm so inclined.
