The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 9 & June WIP

OK, summer hit this tale a bit and some of us are outside having a good time rather than inside painting little figures. Doesn't mean we've given up, far from it. We're just filling up on energy to come back for some double damage! I for one have a bunch of minis sitting on my desk that I can't wait to get to, and the long daylight hours are just what they need.

Welcome to the Tale of Board Game Painters

    What's it all about?
A lot of us wargamers have bought or been given some really impressive board games through the years that have had one extra special selling point; cool miniature game pieces. Mine (and my brother's) include Hero Quest, Space Crusade, Blood Bowl, Space Hulk (both editions) and most recently Chaos in the Old World.

When we opened the boxes we all dreamed of how awesome it would look (in just a few weeks, right?) when we'd have painted every single miniature to the best of our abilities. Awesome atmospheric board pieces with super realistic miniatures all over. Then a few weeks go by, sometimes a few months and for way too many of us a few years. The games are still awesome but all that paint seems to have taken the wrong turn at Albuquerque.

Enter the Tale of Board Game Painters. Now we're going to use the collective power of motivation to really get it done! Participants choose a miniature board game from their collection - one's enough for most of us; after all, they've been unpainted this long already, let's not get carried away - and paint it up in 5 to 10 batches over a period of 6 to 12 months.

At the end of each month (or the beginning of the next actually) we take photos of the month's good work, post it on that month's show off thread and give comments and encourage our fellow painters to keep on truckin'!!

More detailed description of the time plan and structure can be found in the OP of the original signup thread here!

Here are our painters at the beginning of this month:

Please let me know if you feel any of the info is wrong or if I've misinterpreted how/when you're painting the games.

    Board games finished: 12
    #1: steevn - Utopia - 5 minis painted
    #2: robscott5598 - Fury of Dracula - 5 minis painted
#3: steevn - Lady and the Muskateers - 6 minis painted
    #4: robscott5598 - Lost Patrol - 5 minis painted
    #5: robscott5598 - Claustrophobia - 6 minis painted
    #6: robscott5598 - Shadows over Camelot - 30 minis painted
#7: Solun Decius - Chaos in the Old World - 60 minis painted
    #8: robscott5598 - Godzilla Kaiju World Wars - 6 minis painted
    #9: steevn - Cadwallon - 20 minis painted
    #10: Sk1ndred - Mansions of Madness - 32 minis painted
#11: Solun Decius - Mansions of Madness, Forbidden Alchemy Expansion - 8 minis painted
    #12: robscott5598 - Shadows over Camelot (Second set!) - 30 minis painted
Let me know right away if you've finished a full game and I haven't added it here or if the number of minis is wrong. I'm easily confused by all this

In this thread we start by posting last month's painting, our batches of finished miniatures. Include info on what the miniatures are and what portion of the whole game we feel we've finished. Then we comment on each others good work and begin posting WIPs of our next batch.

Don't forget you can still sign up anytime!

    Happy Painting!

Ok so first here's my first minotaur. He will pull double duty as both the minotaur in the Talisman base set and as one of (eventually) 3 minos for Warhammer Quest.
Again I decided to use one of the newer GW plastics as opposed to the original monopose ones used for Talisman and WQ

And here is another GW plastics Ogre. He along with two more (eventually) will be a new monster squad expansion for Warhammer Quest.

And here are some new player characters for Warhammer Quest.
    The High Elf Ranger/Mage

    And the Wood Elf Wardancer

also, the first of several 2-sided doorways/portals from the Warhammer Quest box set.

to be continued due to image limits and wanting to keep types of figures painted in themed groups.....

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 9 & June WIP

And now we get into some of the monster groups from the base game. Again with these guys I decided to replace the silly looking original monopose goblins with the newer monopose ones from the battle for skull pass box set, just cause I think they look better next to the heroe's sculpts.

firstly all 6 of the gobo spearmen. Bases still need ot be finished once i decide what "theme" to do them in for all the gobos.

and the first half of the gobo archers. 3 left to do and of course finish all the bases.

then we move on to some more monster groups. In this case I have the first 4 of what will eventually be 12 total skaven. Again these are the newer monopose plastic from the Island of Blood set standing in for the goofy looking skaven from the box set.

I tried to get a "chaos warpstone" theme going on with their bases and wound up trying to make a whole "green glowing effect" for both tiny
chunks of warpstone on the bases and their eyes, showing the mutational effect of a skaven's favorite mineral supliment.

And now some expansion figures for Warhammer Quest. Using the huge "monsters table" included in the original rulebook and the seperate "blank cards" packs you have the option to expand your game with just about any type of Games Workshop minis to represent all the various gribbly and nasty Warhammer Fantasy monsters that could be skulking around your dungeons. I think when my friends and I did the math back when I was younger it would require something like $1800 worth of GW minis to do the entire table all the way up to level 10, Lord knows what that would cost at their newer "customer friendly" constantly increasing annualy prices of today. But I think I'll just try and flesh out a few new monster sets for the tales rather than go too overboard right away anyways.

that being said I really wanted some undead to skulk around my dungeons rather than just endless waves of skaven and green skins. So here are my first set of undead, some ghosts. Using the GW plastic LOTR "army of the dead" figures. Again with moderate "glowy" effects attempted on their bases.

by next month or so they will get some back up in the form of six more ghost (this time armed with spears) a necromancer, 6 skeletons, 6 zombies, and some ghouls as well. Until then they get a nice creepy looking Banshee to lead them against the heroes.

And on the theme of more monsters and baddies to expand the flavor of my dungeons, we get some Chaos Warriors. Eventually there will 6 total
but for now I have 4 finished. These 4 four come in assorted Chaos flavors. We have Nurgle, Khorne, Malal, and Tzneech for now. Eventually I will add one for Slaneesh and one for Chaos Undivided.

And as I finish some more Talisman figs currently being rebased to better effect I'll throw those up here soon as well.
Also, because apparently I am insane, I also started painting my copy of "Wrath of Ashardalon" and got quite a bit of it done too. more pics to follow as well.

@robbscott5598: Wow what a fantastic pile of models! And Im loving that its warhammer quest. Excellent idea with the ghosts, consider that stolen . Those chaos warriors are fantastic too!
@EmperorNorton: Good work on the Kobolds, those bandages look like a bit of a pain to paint!

Well I didnt catch up, but I have at least finished something this month! I have also finished uni (Wooop!) so I have lots of painting time to enjoy over the summer. I think I should still finish by the end of the tale. Skaven ship is now finished:

I've started work on the sea monsters and the tomb kings ship, but I hope that to only be the first part of junes contribution

I'm afraid I won't be posting any Heroquest models this month. The early arrival of a very welcome addition to my gaming group has thrown life a little into chaos. I hope to post a finished set next month, however.

@robscott: Absolutely impressive, both in quantity and quality. Love the stripy pants on the Ogre and the Chaos Warriors' cloaks.

@HereBeDragons: Now that's disgusting. Well done. I don't even want to know what that green stuff is seeping out of his entrails.

    @iamjack42: Congratulations!

I believe it is mentioned in the rulebook that they were hit in the head when they were trying to be smart with somebody.

Some great entries every month of the contributors of this thread. I loved particapating, but I've been very busy with my warhammer table and orc & goblin army, and din't feel very motivated to paint Space Hulk mini's the last 3 months. Also, I've finished 27 genestealers, 20 spacemarines and some 50 doors. I want to expand the game with different miniatures and scenery, but as I'm mainly focussing on my table and fantasy army now, it won't be until next season. So happy painting and probably see you next year!
