    IG hydra conversion

Hi all, I've been looking to finally start my IG army, having almost finished my Space marines. My list includes 2 Hydras (do know 6th Ed's around the corner, so that might change), but as there's no plastic model (and FW kits too expensive for me at the moment), I'm wondering if anyone knows how would be the best way to convert something into a hydra, or some third party product that can pass for one (just looking at the turrent).

    Thanks, Orik

P.S. If anyone knows of a plastic kit coming out soon, I'll be willing to wait while I get the rest of my army done

All you really need is 4 autocannons and a chimera. You could get away with pasting them on the admittedly too-small turret, or just add some plasticard or whatever you might have sitting around to make a more appropriate sized mount.

Most common is adding the turret from the planetstrike terrain kit. Fw will look better though

A common approach is the use the quad turret from the Planetstrike barrier wall box set. It even neatly fits into a predator/razorback turret ring whose plate in turn is neatly the same length as the chimera chassis pieces are wide and thus can be used as a roof piece if you leave the chimera roof part off. Add a little plasticard to close the hull behind it and you'd be set.
    Awesome. Awesome to the head.

I had three old Griffon mortar tanks, so I pulled out the mortars and replaced them with the planetstrike quad gun found in the barriers box. Fits perfectly.

If I was to build one out of only new material, I'd use the planetstrike quad gun, plunked in the back of a Hellhound Chassis. the HH chasis already has a flatbed, just don't put the fuel tanks and cover on. It's a bit smaller than a chimera, which will make it a little more distinct too

The FW kit is notorious for warped barrels, which are a royal PITA to get straightened.

I use Old Crow turrets, myself. The multi-missile missile turret and 4 50mm barrels per (multi-missile are the box quad launchers).
Drill a new 3mm hole centred in each box launcher. Epoxy 50mm barrel into place. Decorate end of box launcher with spare autocannon ammo drums.

Cost me about $12AUD last time (each for two of them).

No longer play 40k though, but they will see use in my Tomorrow's War forces.

Maxmini make a pretty good alternative if you're willing to go 3rd party on the issue.

If not, consider this idea which has the dual advantages of being awesome to look at and being relatively easy to do.

I have seen nice conversions using the Defiler hull, with a second pair of Reaper Autocannons. Though the look may not fit well with your army.

An idea I've been kicking around is using the cockpit of an Armored Sentinel and the Quad Autocannons from the Aegis Defense line...

Sorry about that, didn't know there was a thred for this sort of thing.

would probably turn up realy well for a trator gaurd army, but mine is ment to be a loyalist army, so would probably need alot of work to make it fut with my theme

thats actualy not a bad idea, I've thought breffly about that as well (have some spare sentinels from battleforce)

looks great, but I dont have any of Griffon or spare Hellhounds lieing around (will be getting 3 Chimera's though)

That conversion looks awsome, might have to look into the prices for that

Most common is adding the turret from the planetstrike terrain kit
I've looked further into this and found these

probably the best one can be found hear (sorry, file type is invalid, so can't add pics) uses the quad turret and gun mount from the defence line, extends the guns barrels, and a slight conversion to a chimera's hull (you can see by following this on the site)

another awesome one can be found hear uses an Ork truck, a template from the site, and the quadd gun

So, what do you guys think, I'm probably going to go with the first one, as it's an easy conversion, that looks good, and can also be used as a Chimera, if I need an extra one for a game.

    anyway, thanks for the feedback

Sorry for the bad pic, but this is how I made mine. Just a manticore with IG weapons team autocannon with lengthened barrels stuck to the top.

Just the sight of those Hydra models made me think immediately of the M50A1 "Ontos" Multiple Recoilles Rifle system.
